You think you got it bad in the States? Go a little north and try being a Canadian customer of Rogers or Bell, basically the only two choices you have between carriers. Bell charges $65 for 300 minutes and 2gb of data. Rogers is basically the same. There are smaller carriers but theyre all owned by Rogers and Bell, so its basically an illusion to give you choice. The only two carriers that come to mind that are independant are Wind and Mobilicty but have limited range.

It's more expensive to run wireless in the US because of lower population density. This requires ton's more towers, and is required by the FCC to provide specific coverage. This cost is socialized throughout the US. Technically if you lived in NYC you should be able to pay a lot less for your service because its a lot cheaper to service that density. But that is against FCC law. Basically higher density areas subsidize lower due to government mandate.
