My parents get their frozen cockles at oriental markets. U should go check them out if u have any around your area. You will find a lot of different weird foods there too.

Cockles are great. I used to eat fried cockles all the time as a kid. My dad used to take me cockling (collecting cockles at the rockpools) on Morton beach and we'd fry them up when we got back.

We never had a fishing licence, and went cockling almost every week so I don't think you need a licence to go cockling. We used to go crab fishing too, but I remember we always had to throw the crabs back. That said I heard a company was forced off Morton beach because they had over 100 people cockling and they where actually hurting the natural cockle population. It's a public beach paid for with taxes, so there's probably regulations on how people can fish there.

Rehi Remy! Another od seafood you might try is sea urchin.  I've never tried them, but am told they are very much an acquired taste.

Sea urchin is very yummy! It's creamy when raw, and called "uni" in a sushi shop.

If you can eat it freshly cracked like a nut, with the black spikes still moving, even better.

They taste best from California. ^_^

Here in New-Zealand you can go out and collect them yourself :) There's HEAPS of places you can find them. you said it tastes a bit like Tuna? Lol, fresh cockles taste different ^.^ I didn't know that fresh cockles were so hard to come by though. It's so cool that you try all these food!

So, if I continue to eat them, I could have a bigger chance of dying, but I never ate bananas much anyway, so I'll be fine. Apparently my Foods and Nutrition teacher at my school said that her mother has the same reaction to strawberries, and it got so bad that she had to go to the hospital because her through swelled up. *shiver* I hope that will never happen to me.

I remember the 2004 Morecambe Bay disaster well. They're worried it might happen again this year as there's another huge cockle bed at Lytham, about 20 miles south, and it's attracting cockle pickers from as far afield as Russia, many of them inexperienced. I'm not a big shellfish fan at the best of times but if people are losing their lives it's even worse.

That is a big problem with so many odd foods- the fresh has to be so much better, but unless you live someplace that has all kinds of ethnic food shops, etc., it's tough to get fresh. But I figure if you actually like the canned, then you'd probably love the fresh!

Just a good reason for you to travel the world when you get older, to taste all the stuff fresh at the source!

I ate these raw for years when I was a kid. I hadn't a clue what they were, or where they came from, but my grandmother always had some. Oh, and have you tried periwinkles? They are an edible sea snail, and usually seasoned with plain salt. Yummy.
