great video! my only issue is that my horse is 17 hands, and very strong. I can't control him, and he's almost dangerous. He needs a lot of work. Any suggestions?
great video. I appreciate informative videos like this. I also really like the fact that you used a beginning horse. It shows a much clearer idea of what to expect.
Wow! Great video! I am definitely recommending this to my young cousin, as this will give her a better visual. Did you make this by yourself??? You look and sound so young! Again, great video, and great job!
I am so glad you used a "just beginning" horse. I gives a much better picture of what to expect, and not to get frustrated when you don't get what you see in the video.
Thank you so much! I'm going to start ground work re-starting my gelding, soon. Could you by any chance explain "vibrating" to me? (He's a pig, so clicker-training him should be easy!)
Sure thing. Vibrating just means sending a little vibration down the rein. Think about sloshing water in a bath tub. If you slosh it at just the right frequency, when you take your hand away, the water keeps sloshing on its own.
Vibrating on a rein means sending a little vibration down the rein at whatever frequency you think will loosen up the horse's joint, so that the vibration can slosh from one side of the horse to the other, or from one end of the horse to the other.
In the same way that water seems heavy when you first try to slosh it, but gets more fluid as you go along, the vibration will run into stiffness at first, then the horse will soften and allow transmittal. Transmittal means that the message goes through the whole horse and does not just change one tiny little spot - like brining the whole horse's back up and legs under, rather than just getting him to tuck his nose in.
Different ways to vibrate - shake your hand, tap the rein with a finger, pump the rein out like you were dealing cards, partially close your hand and open it, slide your hand gently up and down along the surface of the rein, etc Anything goes so long as the idea is to loosen and great fluid transmittal of a message through the whole horse :) If your horse likes what you're doing and responds well, then that is how you should do it. He's the official authority :)
That's easy. Just use the combined effect by pushing down on your horse's whithers. If that doesn't work, use clicker training. Search for the YouTube video called Destinadas First Chair Game. This video of mine also has instruction on how to play the Chair Game in the second half. The video is called "Trotting and Cantering In Hand Over Jumps, Horse's 4th Ride."
I just want to let others know Kali, that you are open to coming to Australia to do some clinics if some group wants to invite you and organise the venues etc. If anyone is interested please let Kali know asap, so we can bring her out here and learn from her. Thanks
Ive been lloking and looking for something to start training my 7 month old palomino colt with...this is what i was looking fo, everything feels tight and clear between teacher and four legged student!r! The instruction is so good and detailed, I cant wait to get started...Im in Ecuador and kind of alone, soi thank you...please do a few more! thank you!!
Thanks so much for your nice comment! I hope it goes well with your colt. Feel free to ask questions if you have any. I'll let you know when I make another video :)
Thanks Kali. Another brilliant video. You said my mare might benefit from these exercises especially since she is a right-brain introvert. I really like how you are focused on making sure the horse knows what you are asking from him/her. That's important to me and to my mare too! Would love to go to one of your clinics. Thanks again for such great hands on info.
Nice video with a lot of good information. You are very easy to listen to and Evan is adorable.

@MdaughertyK Do the work in his stall or somewhere he will feel safe. It doesn't take much space and a horse can't learn if they are scared.

Thank you so much!
Funny, I've always thought of the reins as a telegraph between me and the horse. Not as a steering wheel!
Thanks again.

Thanks for the tips on teaching a horse balance? But how do you teach a horse to stand still whilst you get into the saddle?
