this story is an autobiographic novel of Marguerite duras published in 1984. when the movie was done in 1992 Marguerite didn't like it because she thought that it doesn't send the real message of her book the lover (l'amant). It's more about growing and changing and about making her way in the real world.

still it is a sensual and touching part of her story.

marguerite said that the chineese lover immigrated later to the usa

and he was already dead when the movie was done.

For those who love this movie and consider it one of the most romantic of cinema, [i do], i highly recommend- 'When Night Is Falling.', a small film from director Patricia Rozema, made in the 80's. There are scenes of it on utube, but they spoil the surprises of the film. Just as poetic, lyrical and beautiful. I haven't seen any others that match these two.

Apples and oranges though I loved both films. The thing with "The Lover" is that Jane March suffered over it for a decade, (the handling of it). It bordered....well....it was a snail dancing over a razors edge. Beautiful yet.....dangerous......that was it's main allure perhaps
