  • Thanks so much for uploading this game. Combat in this game is so funny to watch, especially the crawling on your knees trying to chop up insects bit along with the pogostich sword swipe. But thanks for uploading it, because I really enjoy watching the Ys games. great commentary too.

  • What game has the better Item get fanfare?

    Metriod, Cave Story or Ys?

  • Ys is the greatest series ever...

  • I THINK that Felghana is the name of the land that Redmont is in.

  • Probably my main issue of Ys 3 was this: the massive grindfests. I often hit the max level before the end of Ballacetine Castle. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as overlevelling before the last couple bosses (at least, to my experience).

  • I'd tape the attack down and find a spot in that cave where the flying insects appear and turn the TV off for a few hours. When I'd turn on the TV again, I'd be maxed out in levels.

  • You sort of sound like Micheal Cera

  • I've gotten this a lot lately. It's somewhat concerning.

  • @DeceasedCrab Don't be concerned, you're like him, getting all the girls(not his characters, who are awkward).

  • I won't even watch Youth in Revolt. I just can't take anymore of him, not after Arrested Development. Which was super-awkward.

  • @DeceasedCrab

I LIKE THE MOVIE WHERE MICHAEL CERA PLAYS THE ROLE OF AN AKWARD TEEN.

  • You mean anything he's been in, of course.

  • Yes, indeed I do.

  • @DeceasedCrab Although, it's nice seeing his alter ego NOT be awkward. It's literally the only non michael cera role he's ever played.

  • the first metroid was released a year before the first Ys though, still that doesnt stop it being an enjoyable gam

  • Check out the gams on this Ys game!

  • Wow DC... At 7:47, it's like you read my mind. I've never played this game and I thought it sounded like the Metroid "item-get" music. I might try to give it a go. It looks pretty interesting. (aside from the stacking textboxes)

  • Hey DC. I had a trick for this game to grind all the levels I need in the mines, without the perilous intent of being hurt!

  • Adol, the legendary humanoid buzzsaw, back in action! =D

  • Yeah the Ys series has great music and remixes and such. I have the soundtrack on my computer. I heard about the PSP remake, I wish we'd get it in the US and Ys Seven. They're also making Ys VS on PSP.

Also can't have an RPG without some grinding.

  • 2:32 - Ahh, the owl trick. What would we have done in this game without it?

  • Man, for a dude who has such little health, he has a LOT of stamina. I mean, he's been swinging that sword around nonstop for who knows how long. Aren't his arms tired?

  • Just be glad this isn't like the first two where you have to ram into the enemy to damage them.

  • Right on DC, Ys are an awesome game series. I played Ys Ark of Nepistim (sp?) for PS2 about a year ago. Thought it was really fun. Keep it up!

  • Ys games always had the most mandatory yet quickest and most enjoyable grinds.

1st place being half minute hero, but that's because of the speed.

  • You know 100 yen is not a lot of money, but it was back when I was young and grew up on these games.

  • What does that have to do with anything? Did anyone mention yen?

  • As far as I can tell 100 yen has always been about one dollar.

  • Thank you for making this even more of a non-sequitor.

  • Ah... I forgot this game. And its' grinding. <:|

  • Quarry occupied

    Elder lost, somewhere in caves

    Now find him. Or else!

    Insects, bats, blue men

Swords out! Time to grind levels.

    See you next week, then

  • Quite honestly I used to grind on anything where grinding was possible. I miss those days, as a completionist...

Now I just can not stop creating new characters in customizable videogames. Can't get enough of it. Challenge isn't any part of the fun anymore.

How I long for the Simpler days of Duck Hunt, Codename: Viper, and Chrono Cross.

  • Codename: Viper. I rememebr that. It was my 3rd game on the NES. I think I beat it once. I rememeber it being hard...

  • Red Zone Cuba

  • Those blue guys are more like those things from avatar.

  • Which is a good reason to kill them.

  • That was the only problem with Ys. You ALWAYS had to grind. But at least you actually get an attack button in this game, rather than just running into the enemy and automatically hitting them like the previous ones.

  • The Blue Man Group is awesome, I saw them last year in Chicago.

  • "Play it", they said, "I hardly Grind it"!

this game was pretty cool as a kid, though I remember getting frustrated at the lack of me living long enough.

  • Yeah, it's too bad all those games grew up over time.

  • Over-leveling isn't cheesy! Its the secret to success in any level based game! Though perhaps since I spend too much of most early game in RPGs over-leveling its no wonder why I find most of them to be pretty easy...

  • Thank you SO MUCH for LPing this. Thank you also, SO MUCH, for pronouncing Ys correctly. ;P As you may be able to tell from the name (misspelling intentional) I'm a huge Ys fan. And also a longtime fan of your work. Can't wait to see the rest of this! :D

  • Guess what? I do not give two craps about Oath in Felghana. Stop talking about it, all of you.

  • 3:39 Yeah, it would seem implausible for the insects to have too much gold... They're such wise investors, it would be odd to have much liquid assets on them

  • Bringing back memories man. I remember how you have to ignore the health bar and just look at the static value underneath since the formula to display your health is horrible. You take 1 damage and a giant chunk is missing. You have 25% hp and the bar looks like you're at 5%

  • We hear you, DC. We hear you.

It's funny how you have time to grind "before it's too late." One would think an experienced wanderer from Ys would know to do his grinding before encountering any generic dungeon situations, anyways.

  • I love how the difficulty just ramps up from one screen to another. From one damage to like, ten.

I never played this series...but holy cow, that REALLY did sound like the Metroid item theme.

  • One hit, two hit. Red hit, blue hit.

  • Duey sounds like a duck. Even more so than Huey

  • Yeah, Oath in Felghana was made using the PC version of the Ys VI engine. It has 3D environments, with sprites for characters and enemies, instead of shitty 3D like in the PS2 versions of VI, plus there's no voice acting. The combat's a lot smoother, too.

Also, all of the music has been remixed, and it's really good. Valestein Castle is a must-listen.

IMO it's way better than the side-scrolling versions of III, but to each his own, I suppose. You should check it out regardless.

  • One hit, two hit, three hit, blue hit, green hit.

  • You should try worm crawling into places you shouldn't. Can make you kind of glitchy.

  • What console is this game for? I'd like to try it :D

  • DC, do you know if the PSP version is going to come out in English? I haven't heard anything, but I don't think Wikipedia is accurate on things.

  • Happy you're back ^_^.

  • Ooh, I've never even heard of this game before. Going to follow this one. o/

  • "Wait a minute, don't stop believing!"

Ha, I was hoping you would say that.

  • This looks awfully monotonous. Glad I grew up on Alex the Kid and Golvellius: Valley of Doom.

I've played the remake of this with an english patch, the areas are a lot fairer without the need to really grind. But you don't gain levels as quickly and I think the bosses may be a bit harder. It's a very fun game though and the music is insanely good.

  • Good lord, the combat looks really awful in this game. Good thing the dialogue is so good.

  • But...the Blue Man Group ARE hostile killer mimes. You haven't been doing your research, DC. Shame on you.

  • I played this game briefly but I never got past this first area. Guess I just couldn't stand the grinding. Thanks for taking the pain, DC!

  • Looks like faxanadu, dang that game was hard.

  • The Oath of Felgana is a pretty good reimagining of the game- I think it also replaces Ys III in canon, but no one cares about that!

  • For grinding in the first area, hold the attack button and go back and forth between the entrance and halfway.

  • Adol is healed when in the sun!

  • Wow you're back!

  • I hate level grinding, so I couldn't get into this game. So bless you DC, for showing me a game I never would have finished.

and ps, why do insects have coins anyway?

  • I could be wrong as I haven't played Oath of Felghana in a few years, but either Felghana is the land Redmont is in, or where certain other characters are from that I won't reveal because I'd hate to be spoilerific.

Soundteam JDK has always been awesome with music, and their soundtracks are totally worth it. :)

  • excellent

  • I hear you

  • the music is epic

  • Oath in Felghana is a top-down action RPG somewhat like Zelda in perspective. It is also very very hard. The story has been updated somewhat, but it is essentially the same. The Ring System has been replaced by a different one where you get 3 different rings that have different elemental properties and give you new attacks.

  • The sword swinging animations look pretty funny, especially since this looks to be a "running around like a madman while flailing a sword at weird creatures" kind of game. Yay for more DC videos!

  • Never played this series, looks like fun.

  • At the beggining of this mine, you can hold the attack and up buttons where the guys are flying over you. They will keep coming and you can stand still and grind XP. I used to tape the up and attack buttons down on my SNES controller and leave the room until I was at max level

  • 0:45 - nice Duck Tales reference

"Don't stop believing" - from a great band

I used to grind for levels on Slimes of all things.

7:39 re:music: Metroid came out in '86, while Ys came out in '87-89, depending on the platform, so perhaps Metroid is the originator after all.

  • Oath in Felghana!? I have it and have played it, it's ALOT different from this game! It's in actual 3D with a actual worldmap to travel instead of the map you had. You also start with basic items instead of buying them.

  • Apparently, for the remake, Felghana is Redmont.

  • Well Redmont sucks.

  • I have played a bit of The Oath in Felghana that you spoke of.

It's interesting, but it is a bit different. At the beginning there's a lot of wilderness areas to explore and fight in, and the mines are a bit different, with some rooms that bear a slight resemblance to the rooms in the mines in this version.

It's a lot of fun, but I haven't gotten very far in it, the computer I was playing it on is kinda out of commission right now.

  • This game reminds me a lot of a somewhat obscure SNES game called Dragon View. It's really fun; you should give it a shot sometime

  • The more I think about it, the more I realize that Lagoon is really a big rip off of the YS series; even down to the item get music. I still like that game though, but then again I am also one of two people who actually enjoyed Superman for the NES. I have strange taste in games.

  • I didn't grow up on this. This actually comes with strangely apropos timing, since I just started playing the first two Ys games on DS.

Also curse you and your clever, catchy songs! I can't listen to Bloody Tears anymore without thinking of Castlevania birds!

  • Don't you just love those games where if the enemy touches you, you take damage, and you have a butter knife instead of a whip?

    Good times.

  • Pardon me for asking, but what does the "Ring" portion of the HUD indicate?

Somthing involving the rings you collect, i'm assuming?

  • How did you suddenly heal yourself by spending 100 gold?

Ys is a Japanese computer and console role-playing game series, and Nihon Falcom corporation's flagship franchise. It started on the NEC PC-8801 in 1987.

Metroid is an action-adventure video game and the first entry in the Metroid series. Developed by Nintendo Research & Development 1 and published by Nintendo, the game was released in Japan in August 1986, in North America in August 1987, and in Europe in January 1988.

    Hmmmmm...

  • Man, I kinda wish I was able to grow up with this game. Looks like alot of mindless fun. Sadly I was born around the same time the SNES and Genesis were basicly done. And I only had a Genesis back then anyway.

Thank goodness for emulators. Or pawn shops, if you are crazy.

  • Mmmm, I don't think I like the combat in this game. Adol seems like a puss. What was weird about Oath to Felghana, though, was that if felt like some areas were only tough without the right item. Like, you'd get murdered by bats, but then find the Wind Ring and suddenly they've got the stamina of tissue paper against it. Of course, the bosses were ALWAYS tough no matter what.

  • Yay for Ys LP!

Incidentally, the Genesis version is less grind-tastic. If memory serves, you can actually damage the guys on the second screen at level 1! Crazy. They did inexplicably change all the names, though.

  • DON'T STOP BELIEVING!!!

Also if you let go of the sword button, ALL YOUR DREAMS WILL COME TRUE~

  • Oh enemy AI, so exploitable.

  • All this action and i can't get over the really badly designed text boxes.

  • Pretty cool music

  • That health bar is useless, when it's at 39/40 a significant portion of the bar is red, and when it's at 20/40 it's about 2/3s red. Useless.

  • This looks like a lot of fun. Too bad I missed it as a kid - too busy playing Sim City and Aerobiz... and Shining Force on the Genesis.

    Thanks for the playthrough!

  • I liked the Windows version. Now I shall continue watching you while I eat noodles. The point of this comment? There is none.

  • The animation of him swinging his sword along the ground is awesome. I mean... how on earth do you get enough power behind such a swing? With science? Did they even have science in the worlds of Ys?

  • I picked up the game and played it some for myself after I saw your first video. Without saying any specifics.. There's a boss that is suddenly a lot harder than the previous ones, and I'll just plain need more levels and items ( = boring grinding) if I want to take it on. Meh.

  • Poor cave insects the size of bobcats. What did they ever do to you?

  • Now this is a game that i would have hoped more gamedevelopers could learn from.

Faster attacks with non of that, character waiting for ages to do another attack.

Simple, yet sweet RPG, it seems (:

  • Looks like fun, I'll have to get into the Ys series.

  • Just so you know, the gameplay on the others is nothing like this one.

  • @TappaaKissan

Just take note that the rest of the series is very different than this one when it comes to play control and is overhead view.

  • good

  • Adol is taking a midnight train going anywhere.

  • @heroxlegacy Is he the small town girl?

  • Does that make DC a small-town girl? Living in a lonely world?

    Yes, is the answer.

  • Does it go to Mondo Fine?

  • Night Train... to the end.

  • Comment removed

  • He's just a small town boy with his wimpy sword-like toy?

Or is he a city boy, born and raise in not Detroit?

Well, whatever you do, DC. Don't stop LP'ing. Hold on to that fee-hee-ee-ling!

Good episode, as always. I think I'm starting to vaguely remember this game. I rented so many things as a kid that some of the games blur together. Only the memorably good and bad ones (like Megaman 2 and Tecmo Secret of the Stars) stick out.

  • As long as it's not the Night Train to Mondo Fine.

  • looks like a hard game. good music though.

  • Why did you pick the snes version?

  • Grew up on this one. Also, it's way better than the TG16 version. Also, it's good.

  • amazing as always my friend!
