I guess it depends on which one you watched first. I have three older siblings, the two oldest seen the 1983 version first while me and my third sibling seen this version first so we prefer this one over the 1983 one.
But I still would like to watch the 1983 one. Felix Wong is one of my favourite.

Believe me, 1983 version is ALOT better in terms of the acting, fighting choregraphy, and character emotions. theres also the DVD collection of the 1983 version at literally almost every chinese movie stores because its the best. most watched. and most selling. huang yao shi looks gay and weak and stupid in this version, ou yang feng looks to young and gay, guo jing looks and act not as stupid and slow like how he should. idy chan not as playful and clever acting like barbara yung. yang kang looks weak and looks like a pussy. 1983 was and will be the best version! face it! the cast for 1983 was the best!
if 1988 was sooooo good y isnt there any be sold in any stores. every stores and i mean every movie stores that sells chinese movies sell the 1983 version. even the author of the story which is jing yung says 1983 version is the best and the cast were the best for their roll. go to every condor hero video on youtube and ask everyone and seee wat they say. and yes saying this version is better than 1983 is offensive

没看过这版。当时的台湾古装片也看过不少，，都是以假景为主，很没意思。这片头曲中的船上场景也用假的，太搞笑了吧，演话剧啊！是没钱还是懒啊，拍艘真船那么难吗？！对得起我们观众吗？

I watched both of them. 1983 first, then this one. I have to say I personally love this one way more than the 1983 one.
The reason you can't buy this version in any store is because the original film can't be found anymore to make it into DVD. Sad~

記得我國中的時候，每個星期日晚上八點到十點，都會打開電視收看中視的【射鵰英雄傳】。當時很喜歡黃文豪的郭靖、和陳玉蓮的黃蓉。因為那時候還沒看過翁美玲版的。我知道有大部份的人都喜歡阿翁詮釋的黃蓉，我也認為她的黃蓉是一個經典。可是，我還是偏愛陳玉蓮的蓉兒。 而且，這個版本還忠於原著呢！ 順帶一提，潘宏彬的楊康也很帥吔。
