  • It makes me happy to think that she exists in this world

  • This is so beautiful, makes me shiver...

  • love this song!

  • 13 people should be silenced.. off with their toungues.

  • @Rane909 Those 13 people are probably lady gaga fans XD

  • briliant songwirter. her lyrics are sometimes so heart-breaking.....

  • Busco música para mi nueva religióooooNNNNnnnnn----______

  • I love Polly and she's truly a marvelous artist, although a piano teacher would tell her that her right hand is way too stiff at the wrist. Careful Pol or you'll injure it! XXXXX

  • she said in an interview she just pretended she was a virtuoso and banged around on the keys, recording and taking the good bits. notice she's got a bandaged pinkie going on here in this performance as well. amazing.

  • Absolutely flawless. Love this woman.

  • She's brilliant! just absoulutely fucking brilliant.

  • what an incredible artist

  • Same woman, multiple sides. I love her.

  • It haunts me, i know a girl from Peru who has exactly this feeling.

And me as a friend for 10 years knows this....

IO hate the clapping afterwards, it shouod be a stadiujm filled with more than a million souls....

  • Se parece mucho a Ines Efron.

    Hermosa canción

  • seems to me PJ can make the accordion sound good... anything she touches turns to gold

  • olmaz mı olmaz olur mu olmaz olsun

  • this song helped my friend through some really tough times, like when his gf cally dumped him for someone more studley (me)

  • my goddess!

  • just heartbreaking

  • silence, silence, silence, silence, SILENCE.............

  • @jtarantula3390 NOW she makes an even more noisy song out of it, with the band. GREAT!

  • wow....

  • I cant even believe this is Pj Harvey, she has evolved so much it almost feels like this is someone else entirely. Im amazed

  • Grande Pj!

  • I freed myself from my family, I freed myself from work, I freed myself, I freed myself, and remained alone.

  • that by some miracle you d be aware.....fucking awsome pj!i love you

  • That's my favorite line, too! Right when she says "aware" that's the best lol

  • I love this album the most. Especially this song. Just amazing. Just fucking amazing.

  • amazing

  • love her

  • White Chalk seemed like disappointment. After listening more and more - it is a MASTERPIECE! It is so goooood to be wrooooong sometimes...

  • @isurjak My thoughts and experience exactly:)

  • @isurjak Anyone who can admit that (s)he might be wrong gets kudos in my book. Well it seems so natural (especially when we deal with art, in which case it's not being "wrong", it's just that tastes changes…), so why is it that so many people would go to any length but to admit that they might be wrong ? What's so bloody wrong with that ? Aren't we faillible human beings ? Ah, fook it !

  • @isurjak Indeed. The new album as well - can't wait for the next projects! I keep up on youtube, concerts 2008, athens and the like

  • @isurjak The new album as well. She's the best female artist of the past 20 yrs!

  • Astonishing !!

  • when she says though you never wanted me...anyway..

you can see/feel how its something that she really feels/felt

  • i love you polly, i really do

  • She'd been playing piano before this album right?

  • No, she only really started "dabbling" with one for the recording of this album (though I do recall seeing her playing a simple repeating piano line in the EPK video for the Stories album, the song 'We Float' in particular. Beyond that, I don't think she's ever really tried playing piano before).

  • @Halcyon91 she's said that she's experimented with melodies with it, but this was the first time she's done full blown songwriting with it.

  • Pj is a genius, I love all her work but this one, White Chalk...makes me cry. It is so raw and beautiful. Watching it live just intensified it tenfold. I'm in awe of PJ!

  • A single word that beholds so much pain 'silence'

  • exactly...

  • That song gets into my soul ...beautiful,emotional!

  • You're Angel... You're mouth , hand, head and You're legs und eyes there very honest!

She is been slated to play the honest broker in these negotiations.

We love You PJ. I love You Polly Jean.

    <3

    Powodzenia.

    Miłego dnia /

Poland. Kraj ciągłych upadków i chwilowych wzlotów ;)

  • od 1989 tylko ciaglych upadkow;)

  • i love the her facial expression at 1:57. such an honest song...

  • i loved your comment!

  • yes well, you could say pj harvey aint something 2 wring ur nose at,

personally i think she's gotten better with age just like a good wine ^^

  • I love the build of this song - how everything leads up to the silence-part.

Very true to the theme of the song.

  • Beautiful

  • When confronted by such Greatness, I can only humbly thank the Artist for doing what they do...

  • Awesome PJ Harvey thanks a lot for that song ^^.

  • Beautiful song, and I simply adore the fly brouche!

  • So beautiful!!

  • I think the pathetic one here is you mr

  • nothing wrong with good pathos ....

  • this is truly one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard.

  • PJ has always been my favorite... can't wait to get a hold of her new work with Mr. Parrish

  • her fingers hurts?

  • God, she almost mady me cry! And it doesn't really happen very often...

  • Try zipping the end of your cock in the fly of your jeans - works for me EVERYTIME!!

  • hilarious. hahahaha. thanks.

  • Class in a glass indeed, what a legend...

  • class in a glass!the top female artist in the uk...got to see her live.

  • She is the best singer!!!!

  • OMG

  • How could someone make such mind blowing, sonically fierce, dark yet beautiful, poetic, mystical and engaging music like this??? She is truely a godess

I love you PJ Harvey, thank you for beautifully crafted music.

  • "dark yet beautiful" - so true.

  • just love her, pure genius

  • "I'd risen this morning

    Determined to break

    The spell of my longing

    And not to think"

  • i've risen many mornings determined to break the spell of my longing and not to think.

  • She's the best!!!

  • ..........UR MUM

  • PJ kicks so much ass live, it's almost scary.

  • lovely

  • She is a great musician!

  • This song shatters my heart. One of my treasured songs of all time.

  • Absolute GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • take me out...cool song

  • She is very good!!!*****5!

    I like it!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • i love kaki king!!

  • this isn't kaki king, hahah, it's PJ Harvey. Kaki is a good musician, though.

  • Haha, I love Kaki King too. :D

  • how is it that this woman gets more beautiful and talented with age? we should all be so lucky.

  • I can't stop listening!

  • I love It. "white chalk' - great album

  • je suis d'accord avec toi, "white chalk", le plus grand album de PJ

  • damn, that was really good. pj is so cute, check out that bumble bee

  • PJ is one of the greatest female songwriters of this (or any other) generation. The White Chalk album is stunning!

  • fucking wicked, brings a tear to my eye and heart. does she get better and better

  • I like this song!

  • luv pj right down to her bandaid covered pinky finger! brillent ending...the contrast of level of sound in piano to the singing of lyrics "silence" is amazing. pj you never cease to amaze us. you are the female counter part to david bowie in your never endless approach towards your work on albums/cds/concepts. you grace us once again. thank you!

  • Just when I think that she can no longer push the envelope and do something completely different, she surprises me again. This song gives me goosebumps it soo good. She is bloody brilliant!!!

  • Great!

  • PJ is a truly gifted musical genius.

  • when she said: you never wanted to me, anyway, the only thing that I want it's cry.

This song is so beautiful !!!

(Sorry for the mistakes i'm french)

  • i don't want to but i do. cry every time, dammit!

  • same here!

  • oh, you're welcome.

Glad this vid has the power to transform you. Get it? transf... oh nevermind. ;)

  • the longer breaks i take from her the harder she hits me.

me , 24 yo guy , collecting transformers and doing random things can admit i cry everytime.

kill me some more PJ !!

thanks for the vid , you're precious for posting this :)

  • she is natural, original...she is pure! this is beautiful.

  • ... be sure you all check out the live version she did at least a few months ago on 'Later', the long-running BBC TV program hosted by Jools Holland. It's floating around on youtube somewhere. That version, along with this one, are the best, IMHO. Definitely worth checking out.

  • Your humble opinion is spot on : ) Jools Holland version; beautiful...

Thank you for uploading this version, one of the best as you rightly say...PJ, what an absolute treasure she is.

    Jane.

  • I like the way you agree with me. ;)

  • This is the best song she's ever done

  • Sorry I've cried, she stole my heart, great song, great album, perfect artist she is

  • Polly Jean is a fucking legend :) Soul music! A definite Roy Harper feel to the chorus too...

  • So emotional, so beautiful...

  • the simpilicity doesn't extricate the beauty. not everybody can make a whole album as sparse as white chalk and have it be as gorgeous as it is. and out of nowhere from pj harvey. great artist but i never expected this.

  • well said.

  • nice new "face" of one wild legend

  • That song gets into my soul and rattles me. Great tune!

  • A true artist. I adore PJ Harvey. Thank you for posting.

  • Bless her artistic Somerset heart. Who else diversifies to the same extent and ends up with a finished work so pure? 'Marluuu', you've no idea at all.

  • marluu, it is idiots like you who say Hendrix could not play or sing; say Kurt could not sing, play or write; say that PJ cannot sing.

You are ridiculous. Polly's work speaks for itself. After all these years, she is still around; still giving goosebumps and chills through her music; still transmitting whats inside her soul through words and music.

    Take your useless opinion elsewhere.

And if you think she cannot play, post a video.

PJ Harvey = Talent that is one in a billion.

  • Comment removed

  • what were you looking for? your intention eludes me, you must have looked up PJ or have been linked to this from a similar vid. do you prefer earlier PJ Harvey, or are you new to her music? your comment is very vague, yet strong in accusation. who would you prefer or recommend that is similar but better than this?

  • Liga sucks, PJ rocks!

  • OMG, she's always so fucking awsome nothing compares to her...

  • I heard this song countless times...I viewed this video countless times...I am still in awe.

    5*....Sigh.

  • i love towards the end of this song PJ has this almost beautiful childlike piano tantrum of singing and banging out "Silence". It's awesome and she's awesome. She is so terribly underrated. Love ya PJ

  • "The more powerful and original a mind, the more it will incline towards a religion of solitude." ~Aldus Huxley 1894-1963

  • fuck, this is awesome! i love this woman....

  • "I freed myself, I freed myself, and remained alone..." What a powerful line in a beautiful song. Silence as sanctuary or prison, goal or unintended consequence, blessing or curse.

  • Simply the greatest female artist ever in my book! Polly never stays in one place too long, always pushing her music in different directions and always it seems getting it right. Stunning!

  • One of the greatest artist of all time, male or female, period.

  • and better than most of the men, too :p

  • Amazing... Btw, this was filmed on the Danish television show "Liga DK", an alternative music programme on the national broadcasting channel DR1... Which is (was) awesome.

  • She's amazing, lovely, enchanting and sad...

    I think I love her.

  • gorgeous song from most underrated talent of our time, her latest album manages to be stark , haunting and beautiful

  • For some reason this song reminds me of the last few lines of WB Yeats "When you are old." Lovely.

  • hehe

  • Beautiful :)

  • This finish is amazing. Just beautiful, so intense.

  • this song sends a chill up my spine. beautiful!!

  • I want to learn to play the piano just so I can learn this album. I fucking choke up listening to it.

  • I heard this song on my local college radio station last night, then downloaded it and White Chalk from the new record and really liked them. I'm happy for a new record from Polly; we thought she'd gone. The new music is definitely different but, like all of her music, it's evocative, edgy and ultimately satisfying. This is the same Polly Jean we've known and loved all these years; she's just trying on some new things.

  • wow , i'd wish you to have any whatsoever :s if anything yells 'balls, guts and courage' it's labeled White Chalk for the marketing purposes .....

  • I thought it was a reference to the white cliffs of Dover.

  • so, blb, when you say, 'i'd wish you to have any whatsoever', are you talking about balls? Was this remark intended for Cheapy2006 (whose now-hidden comments include a reference to balls), or am I just totally missing something? Just for the record, I do have balls and I do love PJ, who I think also has balls, at least in the figurative sense. :)

  • danro2112 - Looks like you're right, the comment was most probably intended for Cheapy2006 and not you.

  • yes , yes indeed , sometimes tube shows comments in the strangest ways (or it was my mistake :) ). PJ is pure genius for me , nothing she ever wrote/sang was even close to mediocre.

  • there's no good reason why you should block cheapy's comment. i completely disagree with his/her critique, but it still should be posted like everyone else's. have we really come to the point where we can only accept 'agreeable' comments? ... everyone's opinion counts.

  • Illsamhainlll, I don't think cheapy's comment was blocked at all--just enought people gave it a thumbs down that now you don't automatically see it, but if you click "show" it shows. I will say, this is the best work I've ever heard from PJ, and I think sexist guys often dis women for writing about our intimate lives. This is Love was more traditionally sexy, but this is way deeper.

  • natashaclaire is correct. Youtube automatically hides a comment once a sufficient number of voters have given the comment a 'thumbs down'. It has nothing to do with me, although, it is possible for me as the "video uploader" here to eliminate "disagreeable" comments in other ways, but I haven't chosen to do so.

  • i stand corrected. i obviously don't know how this stuff works. sorry to waste your time, i tend to do stuff like that sometimes. love the vid kikkiokioli, i need to get some more Harvey albums.

  • she is my music-super-hero

  • Amazing performance. I NEED to see her live. The last chorus shimmers through your body. It makes you feel cold, but liberated, like standing on a mountian.

  • Beautiful way to put it. I have never heard this song before. MY GOD that song captures the fruitless hope and resolve of unrequited love. Astonishing lyrics. She is very gifted.
