  • I liked this book very much. Your great grandmother was a complex person. I love the way you have tried to unravel her deeper feelings and to understand her actions within the mores of her time and place. I am glad that you have shown her very loving compassionate side as well as other aspects of her character.

  • Christ people she's only talking about what she's written. and what's the point in bringing her husband into it? if you hate George Osborne so much just go yell at him over some political interview video. jesus people.

  • Your husband is the epitome of a twerp

  • THANK YOU Frances for writing this fascinating book. Idina also comes off well in James Fox's book WHITE MISCHIEF. She seemed to me to be a wonderful lady, much loved, kind and unlike many people in Kenya at the time, treated her servants very well. It is just too easy to dismiss people for their lifestyles without looking at the bigger picture and trying to understand why people are the way they they are. Thank you again and I look forward to your next book!

  • If people don't care about this woman's 'filthy over privileged family', then why are they watching a video of the author talking about it?

I'm reading this book at the moment as I like reading biogs, whether they're about someone living from a poor upbringing or not. Wouldn't say it was the best book I've ever read but it was an interesting read nonetheless

  • Now we know you had a whore for granny!

  • Wow lady. Your swinging imperialist grand-nanny was sure something. Must be great to have the money to fart off to Africa for fuck-parties on a whim. And what exactly did the natives make of the feather-blowing "High Priestess"?

  • @SquareHedd her husband is named GIDEON!

  • @LollieSmith haha just saw that on wiki too. Classic! GIDEON!

  • Who cares about your filthy over Privileged family. Your granny was just an old slag but because of her aristocratical status she is viewed as totally spiffin' and super wild..

II would be much interested in reading about her poverty and diseased ridden counterparts in Blackburn or East london slums battling through while this old dragon was livin' the high life...

Lol this book is in both local charity shops for about 50p ..

  • Very well researched and written. If you are interested in colonial Kenyan excess, Earl of Errol et al you will enjoy this enormously.

  • some very common jealousy playing a part in this commentary I'd say. Time to grow up?

  • That book sounds fascinating. I want to read it.
