Sounds great with just the banjo, and also sounds great with a mandolin, guitar, Dobro and stand up bass. I had the joy and good fortune to sit in with a group of pickers. I was the least talented of them all, but they treated me with respect and showed me how to play better. I never forgot that lesson or the kindness t9o strangers. And this is why I LOVE BLUEGRASS!
Downright awesome. I feel horrible!!! 10 years ago I bought Geoff's books and VHS tape at a local record store in Stone Mountain, GA. I looked into 1-1 lessons ... I can't believe I turned down lessons to learn to play from this man in person. How cool and talented he is. Thanks for putting the lessons to the masses Geoff. Yall aught there learn to play now and keep BG strong and growing.
I've bought a few of Geoff's online lessons and they're really great. It's also very helpful to have the mp3 backups that are included to play along with after you learn the song. Train 45 is my next purchase. It seems pretty complicated but from my experience with Geoff's other lessons, I have full confidence that I can master the piece. By the way, I have no affiliation with Geoff.
I really enjoy your lessons and hope to be able to buy some of your premium stuff soon I just starting out on bluegrass style banjo Although I have several years of Clawhammer experience it is like starting over from scratch. Do you have any advice as to how to get your fingers to stay planted ? I notice you plant your pinky finger only or best I can tell from this video. When I am picking i have a tendency to plant my pinky only right up against the bridge But I cant plant it on the head
I had to pay retail to get that banjo and was lucky to get it. At least 5 prominent collectors were looking at it and I had 12 hours to make my decision. A tenor or Plectrum Flathead Granada is considerable more rare than an original 5string RB3
There was a question about the value of the pre war banjos. Before addressing that question I will say that most of the banjos I see that are represented as complete are not and are only worth a fraction of what an original is worth. For example an original 5 string RB 3 might bring $100,000 to $125,000 whereas a tenor TB 3 with a new tone ring and neck might bring 12,000 to $20,000 depending on condition and if parts are replaced may only be worth $2,000 or $3000.
I have to agree with a couple of the guys below... that is one fine sounding Banjo... like butter... well kinda like a good custard good and creamy and Sweet...
It is a 1932 PB Granada Original Flathead banjo with a 5 string neck made by Frank Neat. It is in the 9526 batch. there are several Flatheads in this batch

a band without a banjo aint a real band. rap music would be better if it had lots of banjo.

I've been learning from Hohwald, and this song will be hard for me to learn since the melody isn't too apparent or necessarily coherent.

I found a nice Silvertone 5 string for $120 at Elderly Instruments, she plays very nicely, and has a tight drum and straight neck and good frets.
