  • de france Merci leo Merci leo great

  • I see one Rob Zombie fan voted.

  • I saw Leo live in a small club around 1990. It blew my mind. He told some really funny stories, one about a guy in prison that I wish for the life of me I could remember. He also played some of his famous riffs in reverse for us which was a real treat that boggled my brain.

  • when you see him in concert you get so into his stories and anecdotes that you forget for a second how great he is at music (the reason you went to see him) and then he starts to play and you crap your pants at how great he is!!

  • My bro turned me on to leo back in the 70s, and this was is my fav song, love his smile in this, very nice :-P

  • Don,t get that lady Gaga stuff,I guess he was making some kind of joke about her .I think her stuff is garbage.

  • Leo has always had such interesting picking patterns. He never gets old or ceases to amaze me. Could listen to this all day.

  • I just saw him in Seattle, WA. I like his songs

  • I saw him last night in Bethlehem, PA. He played this song!!

  • @ste8636 I,m Going to see him in Nov in Phoenix I already got tickits 3rd row center stage.I,m only going to be 12 feet away form him.I,m sorry to brag. But it is leo.And I hope he plays Julie,s House too.BTW at age 65 how was his guitar playing?

  • @844jimthompson I was pretty close too. About the same as you're gonna be. He's a bit slower now, But just as amazing as all the old videos i've seen. That was the first time I'd ever heard this song too. great show. he played for just over an hour.

  • @ste8636 Thanks for the reply,I saw him alot in his prime he was great. The best in my opinion .I love it when he talks to the audieance. He,s got a great sence of humor.BTW-you can watch Julie,s House and many other,s on utube...Thanks Jim.

  • @ste8636 If you want to listen to something funny...Go to google and type in....Bob Dylan meets Leo Kottke -funny

  • @844jimthompson I just discovered him a year ago. I love him. He's brilliant. My favorite album of his is Chewing Pine, with Six and Twelve String a super close second. I've seen the Dylan thing too. :) He def talks alot. It was funny when I went to see him, he couldn't get his guitar situated right on his shoulder and it took him a minute to get adjusted. He goes, "God damn it! How does Lady Gaga do it??" Funny as Hell!

  • Genious

  • A beautiful song that`s never been performed better. Thanks Mr Kottke and thanks jpiir for posting the clip

    Tony

  • can't stop watching.........

  • @ilikeponiees same here incredible

  • Leo, Your music always makes me smile. I remember seeing you play at the Unitarian Church in Portsmouth, NH back in the 90's. I was in the balcony with my fiance and you had the ceiling vibrating with your 12 string...:)

  • Here is just so damn good feeling!you cant help smiling!

  • Fantastic

  • A true master. Love and respect to Leo.

  • Just went and saw him on Maui at the MACC.Awsome guitarist, love his music, love this song.

  • i have been a Kottke fan since mid seventies, people who know anything about acoustic guitar will ALWAYS take notice when they hear leo for the first time or the !hundreth

  • This music sticks to your ribs.

This tune has been running in the background since I first heard it.

Something about the tuning, timing, the round baritone voice.

Nobody else can get this sound out of a guitar.

  • I love this song.

  • Oh, gee, I'm so sorry it didn't work Paula.

Nineteen-ninety-six was a long time ago but, well, so recent.

  • If the Acoustic world has a Hendrix - its this guy. He's that creative and important.

  • love leo's eyebrows, very expressive

  • Lovely

  • In a word: LOVELY

  • In a word: LOVELY

  • Music at its purest

  • Leaving for my fourth consecutive trip to Austin, Texas at the end of the month to watch Leo at the Paramount theater. This song is one of my favorites!!

  • One of my all time favorite songs by any performer. A true masterpiece. I would give anything to have half his talent.

  • Going to see him in Salem, OR this saturday. I can't wait. Can't get enough of his music since I was turned on to it early last year.

  • @y2nutta I've been a fan of his since 1972. I never liked folk-blues before and ahve been hooked by his style ever since

  • this makes my hair stand on end. its a high i've never experienced...

  • Unbelievable talent. An artist not too many can match.

  • a tremendous talent - saw him many moons ago at colby college in waterville maine - this song has always touched me ... does he set aside his self-importance and get close to the girl - always wondered ...

  • Not sure, but the impression I get from the song is that he's a ghost.

  • saw him live very entertaining and personable

  • Great comment - so true

  • Kottke is a human metronome here

  • Sry i meant to upthumb but hit the wrong button : p

I could only dream of keeping time like that

  • @jeeperforlife I'm so glad to see this comment. I was wondering what kind of person would thumbs down this song; glad to know it was a mistake!

  • A perfect song and performance. FANTASTIC.

  • You're right, a mediocre instrument certainly doesn't allow for this one to come out easily...

  • great guitar work...its a toughy to learn unless your guitar is a goodun, hard on left hand! the tab is at tabpigs, its spot on!

  • i heard this a while ago live when i was about...oh..10? maybe 11 0r 12. i just remembered the name and looked it up. and it all came back.

  • I remember hearing him from the womb. my dad played his music

  • When I first heard the music of Leo, it was centuries before I was born. He goes back that far.

  • songs for those of us on that deserted island of mind.. and exisitence..sure beats a coconut for a friend with makeup

  • I was nice surpriced to hear how much the guitar style bears a resamblance to African guitar music.

  • Funky!

  • I loved this song. Simple, understated, beautiful!

  • i'm completly speechless! you're so graet leo kottke!!!

  • @softguitarr hey dont worry hooked on phonics doesnt work for everyone

  • I remember seeing him play on Austin City Limits when i was a kid, Sat there the whole hour dumbfounded

  • I saw him warm up for muddy water's in Lenox Mass with the same exact impression .

  • stud

  • wow first time ive heard this and i LOVE IT!!!

  • Leo is Great! See him if you can, this music is so good, not enough people are into it, he made me buy guitars for my sons.

  • Leo once said that next to a piano or apipe organ the 12 string guitar was the grandest instrument built.

Well, not in my hands it isn't. LOL!

But in his his? Yeah, his comment is very conceivable.

  • I love this song. Does anybody have the tab for it?

  • Theres a guitar pro tab for it. 911 tabs has it i think.

  • leo..amazing technique.....and i love the eyebrow thing....

  • love the beginning

  • I can't imagine life without the music of John Fahey and Leo Kottke !!!!!!!

  • Why the hell have I not heard of him before?

    He's fantastic.

  • Because the radio is busy cramming puffy and rhianna down our throats

  • fatchuk812 welcome to Leo Land, there is a LOT of good stuff on YouTube!

Unfortunately Leo has been having trouble with his right hand, which he attributes to his aggressive fingerpicking style. You might enjoy some work he did recently with Mike Gordon of PHISH. Yes, Phish. Good stuff, recorded on some lush island somewhere.

digndrums2003 - right on, sir or madam. Watch for the new load of shit from Britney Spears and her Milli Bolognie computer producers.......

  • The duet version of this song with Emmy Lou Harris is sublime--- haunting, melodic, evocative. I've been listening to this guy since 1971, he's fantastic. Saw him live in Redwood City, CA last September, on a bill with Judy Collins. He should have been the only act, he was mesmerizing.

  • tight! love it. but he creeps me.

  • You are without equal, an American treasure, a virtuoso whose music has influenced thousands of guitarists worldwide by defining the goodness of the 12 string guitar.

As a contemporary, I am greatful to have been playing so many of your songs for so long, and

am not apologetic that many, like Julie's House and Pamela Brown bring tears to my eyes when I play them.

    God bless you Leo.

While guitar makers continue to want to drive 12 string sales,

  • I marvel at his ability to make a 12 string guitar sound so clear with fingerpicking. Very hard to do, and he makes it look easy.

  • Nr-1:: Bravo!! remek video és gitáros ez a srác!

  • Ez a "srác" 63 éves :-) de tényleg jó gitáros.

  • I could listen to this song continuously. I almost do on my ipod. The combo of his acrobatic eyebrows and rustic yet smooth voice is quite mesmerizing. Nice work Leo.

  • Me, too! I LOVE Leo! He is amazing. And I love his voice, too!

  • love this tune; it explains why the 12-string exists.

  • Leo Kottke sings!!!!!! What a voice! I always thought of him as a guitar intrumentalist. ; )

  • yes!! I agree.. Kottke himself once described

his voice ( in the liner notes on one of his albums) as "geese farts on a foggy morning" but I disagree..I think his voice is WONderful--check out Great Big Boy for a REALLY different side of Kottke.. possibly his

most creative and varied studio album ever.

  • Hey timjmoran!

Thank you very much for the tip!

    I'll look up your recommendation!

"geese farts on a foggy morning"! lol!! ; )

    Kindest Regards,

    Lee x

  • I recall it was geese farts on a muggy day. :)

  • me too!! what a voice,and what a song!

  • I've searched everywhere to find this tab and I cannot...any ideas?

  • try tabpigs . org

let me know how it works out!

  • Thanks for the tip!!! I tried tabpig and it was there! I dont know how long it will take me to learn to play this tune( Probably years and years!) But i'll definatley give it a try!

    Kindest Regards!

    Lee x

  • well i've learned it for the most part, and now that i compare this video and what i learned from the tabs, i realized that the tabs were off a little, so i'm going to attmept to relearn it a little. you may choose to do the same

  • I'll give it a shot! Thanks for the information! ; )

  • Thanks for uploading this. Another wonderful song the sublime Mr Kottke.

  • Hey, thanks a bunch for posting this! Great song. I've seen him live 5 or 6 times but he never has played Julie's House, so I'm glad to find this. I'm not complaining (much) but this live version is missing the super smooth lead that can be found on the studio recording. Well, you can't have everything.

  • Incredible! Kottke is such an artist! He's had little musical training too!

  • He's so beautiful.

  • Whenever I have seen Leo in interviews discussing his singing voice, he always seems to denigrate it. I disagree though, I think his voice really quite beautiful.

  • I couldn't agree with this comment more. He's darn good. I play one of his songs, Pamela Brown, and he does a great job way better.

  • I have been searching a long time for this song. I had mistakenly attributed it to Lyle Lovett because I saw a 1987 (?)episode of Austin City limits where he was on stage before Leo, and my memory had failed me in the intervening 20 years. This is a fantastic song and one of the first to get me into fingerpicking. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You've already made my year.

  • That chick singer was the unmistakable voice of Emmylou Harris. Their harmony was bliss. "Time Step" album - 1983. Additionally, Leo was accompanied by Albert Lee on 6-string.

  • I like this song..and not just because my name is Julie ;-) ! Thank you for uploading.

  • I never tire of this video. What a masterpiece!!

  • Night times varieties, one of my favorite shows. Especially Last Steam Engine Train/Stealing/Airproofing- medley is one of the most unreal performances I've seen from him!

  • This is one of my favorites. The studio version with the chick singer is a killer.

  • Leo said that this is Al Franken's favorite of his.

  • Comment removed

  • This is the period when I consider Leo to have been in his absolute prime. Blew everybody away! His 12 string sounds like a big block Chevy. Notice he was also using fingerpicks at this time. At least a thumb pick. Couldnt see his fingers.

  • Kick Ass ! Thanks so much for this :).

  • dude, seriously! made my day! my most played song on itunes
