Have you tried spinning a bar magnet on the same horizotal plane as your water level and see your floater magnets spin in sink? I see magnetic fields more as building blocks that have various shapes. The spinning bar magnet becomes a cog that pushes the floater magnets' field.
A bit like electrons.
