If you want a more elaborated understanding not based upon pop-culture, think this movie as a sort of filmic Post-revolution russian play, in the same vein as an acmeist work from Goumeliev, or something from futurist Maiakovski. It's the art to display scenes by deconstructing abstract concepts to render it absoludicrous. Besides, Slava Tsukerman comes from Russia. Indeed, probably it was probably one of his indirect sources of inspiration, with various artsy '70 flicks.

@nozoto From what I've read, the film happened because the Russians wanted to showcase their cheap special effects to the world, and the Americans wanted to tell a story about the New York Punk/Underground (unsigned) scene at the time.

I adore the film so much that I even called the cameraman, Yuri Neyman, in NYC just to chat with somebody about it...later I got into film making in LA, so it wasn'`t

a totally wasted experience I guess.

Russians masterminds were Tsukerman, his spouse Nina Kerova, and the responsible of FX (I don't remember his name), Anne Carlisle herself represented mostly american interests on this indie project.

As a fellow russophile, as an enthusiast of various uncanny old shows / documentaries and as a hater of world of Fashion in general, I gotta love Liquid sky.

It's definitely a trippy gem of black humour.

To recover money from a deprived guest of village, Asterix and Obelix once goes for acting. Their crew performs an avant-garde happening to shock rich Romans for entertainment. I'd like to see this again. Wasn't crazy about it when it first came out. All I cared about was the plot, and scenes like this one tended not to be related to the plot in a way that made me impatient. Now I realize it's all about the excesses of the 80s, but I didn't think that way back then. I was asking questions like "What was the aliens' agenda" and "How will they be stopped?" and "Will the girl make it with one of them?" Stuff like that.

Early 80s independent film. It takes place in the New York Art/Fashion scene, and the main characters are also heroin addicts. The woman at 0:22 and the man at 0:25 are played by the same woman. The woman at 1:14 is an ill-tempered performance artist who wants to move to Berlin. There are also some space aliens in there who want to suck from people's pleasure centers, which are activated while shooting up or having sex. Not sure what is going on with the Marching Band from Hell music.

I didn't discover Visage until a year or two ago but I noticed that Steve Strange had very similar style to what was going on this movie. What about Kas Product? I am always amazed at peoples inability to "get" this film. It's stupidity is totally intentional, a hilarious send up of pretentious underground club culture and excess (read drug abuse). The aliens are the most obvious metaphor for H.I.V. ( you die from sex...get it?)and some of the lines are beyond hilarious..."I am androgynous not less than David Bowie himself." Really a great film if you understand the context. It is in so many ways a comedy,..an all time classic.

AIDS outbreak started mid-1981, and this liquid sky was released mid-1983. i guess it's quite possible.

The film was released in 82 and while the medical community was aware of A.I.D.S. the media blitz surrounding the virus hadn't even begun to materialize, certainly not enough to use as a metaphor in this film. The film was shot in 80-81. Not to mention the director and actors have never once mentioned in interviews and A.I.D.S. connection. It just isn't so. Nice theory though. Like so many things.
