Great to see someone enjoying firearms so much, especially such a beautiful historic gun that us Brits and all Commonwealth/former Empire owe so much of our history too. Rule .303!
Well, actual calibre & given calibre differ. Another example is the 7.92mm mauser round. Its actual diameter is about 8.10mm, but the round is always refered to as the 7.92x57mm mauser, like the rifle you use in this vid is refered to as a lee-enfield 303. I always use the given calibre.
OMG that gun is bad ass !! Im in the process of getting my gun license, ive already purchased a locker and ive sent off an application to a gun club today. I got told by the nsw firearms registry that you have to be specific on what sort of rifle you want to buy before they issue you with a permit. I think ive just decided what i want to buy :D thumbs up all the way!
This one is the No.1 Mk.3 made in Lithgow, NSW - IMO the best SMLE money can buy mate. Budget about $500 minimum for one with a very good bore and overall in generally good condition with matching serial numbers.
@flyboy172r I got a Number 1 Mk.4 for 240 after tax, matching numbers stamped from the ROF factory and excellent shiny bore, are the MK.3s more expensive?
That's actually a really hard thing to guess, mate. Here in Aus, there are pretty standard prices for SMLE's. No1Mk3's and No4Mk1's are generally similarly priced in nearly every circimstance. What price is based on is a few things: quality of the stock, quality of the action and reciever, quality of the bore (big one) and matching numbers. If the quality is excellent, and the nubmers match, those guns usually go for big $. Otherwise, $200-$250 for a crappy one.
@flyboy172r I might have a "crappy" one then haha. Stock is ok, needs some oiling and it'll shine up good, bore is excellent, action is smooth, the bluing is worn off a bit on the bolt and the receiver, kinda "patchy" I guess you could call it, but either way it slugs a .303 down range and is very accurate, so I'm happy. Mine is also made in England not in Aus. like yours was, I would like an Aussie gun for my collection.
No, you misunderstand. Australian prices are VERY different to US prices. I usually go off the 1/3 rule. If a gun is priced in Australia, usually in the US it's a third of that price. Because Aus has gun control laws, and there are not that many shooters, everything is exorbitantly expensive - from 30 cal rifles and ammo all the way down to the .22LR
@flyboy172r O alright, I get you now, yea I have heard of your gun laws, that really sucks, this country is headed that direction too I hope someone stops it before it gets there, I can tell in your video that your rifle is in better condition then mine is tho, the furniture and bluing at least. If you wanna pop over to my channel its one of the newer vids I've got of my Enfield, I've also got a vid of it alongside a Nagant rifle as well :)
Used properly, a sling would make your arm into a more rigid prop, you'd be able to keep closer to on-target while cycling the bolt, and it'll reduce the recoil movement.
Must be fun. I'm probably getting a Mosin Nagant soon. Can't wait to go to little river with it. I also wanted to ask, how common are 7.62x54r rounds? And can you buy them in little river?
I generally don't have any trouble finding 7.62x54mmR. You can go commercial or surplus. Surplus is generally cheaper and reasonably easy to come by (spam cans of 440 rounds usually), but comes with its downsides (See my Mosin video). I personally have been buying commercial brass for the last few months, which has been working a treat. I buy Highland Sports: 150g FMJ and 180g Soft Point, both are on average about $25-$30 per pack of 20. Message me for places where you can buy.
Really am unsure of how to come across military surplus unfortunately! I would think the only thing is to approach SMLE dealers, or try the internet. Otherwise, commercial made .303 British is what I'd recommend - in particular, Highland Sports - who sell 150g SP, 180g SP and a 174g FMJ. The FMJ round is a great target round, I have seen accurate shots out at 300 metres open sights, and the SP rounds are great for hunting. Cost is from about $25-$30 per pack of 20 (depending on dealer)
Hi crazen, where do you hail from? You can find some magazines for them occasionally on Gunbroker, though Im not sure that the place works outside of the US.
U are snapping on the trigger and not applying good shooting techniques. Click on the ads??? Ya rite after your lousy shooting, no way man...@flyboy172r
@boharihamen How is the abuse of the rifle? The SMLE was designed for that! - or are you one of those "buy a car to wash, wax, admire, and garage it" vs. driving it?
@TacticalGunGuy This is a gun that is designed for accurate fire, to rain down judgement on american and britain enemies. It is a better gun that the new bullpup rifle that the british army is using now, and just to see this gun using it is painful, just painful.
Not one to wax up a rifle and hang it in the living room and ogle at it while having a nice cuppa of coffee, but seriously, the way this guy is shooting is not proper at all....quite a waste of time to see this clip, honestly...
@boharihamen In addition to the normal direct-fire sights, the SMLE was originally equipped with a "volley sight" - intended to lay down a lot of indirect fire on an area, NOT accurately. Oh, and it IS possible to fire that fast AND hit a man-sized target at 200 yards. 37 rounds/minute is the record, set by a SMLE, just after WW1, IIRC - time includes clip reloads, and ALL were hits on-target.
The Lee Enfield is one of the coolest pieces of history ever. You pick this rifle up and you could hold a rifle that charged across no-mans land at the Somme, Gallipoli, Passchendaele or landed at Normandy, in the south Pacific or possible fought along the 38th parralel. they are so fun to research, If you dont have one I advise that you get one!
@blekigel i have an Australian lithgow 303 (same as in the vid) and a USA pringfield M1903A1 and many people that just get into shooting hate old guns but i must say the best ones are the ones built during WW1 and WW2
Nice shooting - and a nice speed firing. I try that myself sometimes, but I still have a long way to go...
Ever shot a straight-pull rifle like a Swiss K31 or G11? They are beautiful and great to shoot, too. Dead accurate and so smooth to operate - about as smooth as a well-kept Lee-Enfield in good condition.
mate using those big heavie .303 your left hand would be better further down the rifle. this would provide a much more stable shootign platform. other than this nice work. i love the old rifle.
Recently bought the exact same gun. Can't wait to get out there and have that smile too!

Brass case Mk7 or 8 FMJ military surplus. Probably about 50-70 years old, didn't have any batch stamps on it and some were corroded and/or duds.
