Both of you are right. Smiling is indeed a human emotion. Of course we smile when something makes us happy but it is also part of a cultural thing as well. In Japan, Japanese people smile or laugh when they are embarrased. If you take a look at the interview with Bruce Lee he says something very similar as well. When he came to the US he didn't know when ppl were putting him on or not.
