To be honest, barnes should have all his medals stripped. Being caught with steroids twice is pathetic. Godina won gold in the shot put in the 1996 Olympics, not the steroid eater barnes.
not a spinner, but after looking at this video his right leg is the culprit. His left leg however is perfect. He had good heal and toe alignment and he was closed on the power position, his spin wasn't very linear but hes a master of the rotational.
@hammerms92 Or more accuratly, it's the BEST technique and only one man has ever mastered it. Judging by your name, your only 18 or 19, so what the fuck have you seen that this twice Olympic medalist hasn't?
He was on some shitty ass drugs that give you a little more agression in the throw which make sod all difference. And you're also telling me that Ulf Timmermann wasn't on the juice? Cos' for a glider, his tech just don't work at 6'4" without a little extra help to break 23m.
@TheBruiser012 To each their own man, I'm in high school and I feel more comfortable doing the glide. It's all about what the person wants to do. Just so i'm clear i'm not arguing with you, i'm sort of agreeing :)
@falci52 Being 6'3" and throwing 23+ with the 7kg would be easier using a spin tech. It's physics, becuase Timmermann's height puts him at a big disadvantage. Gunthor was better suited to the glide because he's 6'8". Using the spin, Barnes can put more speed on the shot, so it goes further. Had he been taller, that wouldn't come into play. Barnes is 6'4", thus the extra speed is vital. Timmermann wouldn't have been able to put such force onto the shot without 'roids helping him at 6'3".
@TheBruiser012 Ulf height is not exactly a "big disadvantage". Glide is suited for tall guys, sure, but Ulf's height was just fine. He wasn't short. He was a superb technician and really really fast. The talk about steroids has no point as every thrower in that era was on. Gunthor was on, and he was taller, then why didn't he put more than Ulf? Their training conditions were pretty much the same and it's not like GDR had superior drugs. Ulf is simply a superior athlete and the best glider.
And people should not kid themselves, if Ulf hadn't shattered his knee and lost the support of the state, he would set the WR that would remain unbroken for a very long time. His consistency with big throws was unbelievable. Barnes had great distances a handful of times, while Ulf did it all the time. I have no doubt that Ulf would throw over 23m at least two more times. He set the WR in '90, and then he was defeated a couple of times in that year. No consistency.
@TheBruiser012 Alessandro Andrei, who after Barnes and Ulf was the closest to 23m (with 22.91 and 22.84 and 22.72 in the same competition), was 191cm tall. Udo Beyer was only 1cm taller than Ulf, and yet he was one of the top 4 gliders of all time. Udo was consistently in top for 10 years. Brenner with 22.52 was 192cm tall. They were all tall enough, none of them was at disadvantage.
@TheBruiser012 Of course, GDR had state sponsored doping program. Even Ulf said that up until 1988 everyone was on something there (Ulf said this in those posts he made at The Ring forums that I sent you). But those were basic drugs, nothing special. USA did it, Soviets did it, and a lot of other countries. Barnes was even caught. It was the reality of their sport. So, no one played fair.
Some people often have a wrong understanding of steroids in track and field. Like the Ben Johnson scandal. For sprinters and many other athletes, steroids primarily offer faster recovery times in training. The faster you can recover, the more quality work you can do. So, they actually train harder than others. If you level the field, the best athletes always surface. Ben would beat Carl if they were both clean at the time, which they weren't. Same goes for many other events. Sorry for the rant
@TheBruiser012 Yeah, it's because of Seoul. The testing procedure changed. He failed it twice, once in 1990 and then in 1998. I feel sorry for Ben Johnson in 100m. Barnes could keep his WR and he tested positive in the same year he made it, but Ben's records were taken from him (even the one from 1987). It shows how different standards apply to American athletes. Carl Lewis tested positive in Olympic Trials in 1988, and it was covered up.
dont give up man a freshman in high school my pr was 35 with a ten and then as a senior it was 53 with a twelve now im doing it in college dont give up!
I have been trying out for track this past week; and shot put is my favorite, And when practice was done he told us to go look at how people in the olymics did it; like, go on youtube.
x candy is prob lieing but im going into grade 8 and i won my track and feild counties and my throws were 11m 23cm 11m 52cm and 11m 46 cm second place threw 10m 30cm (8pound)
not with the same shot weight you dumb fuck you're probably shooting a 4 pound ball that ball is 4X heavier so compared to them your shooting 4m so dont even think of talking
10.20 is shit you suck balls fag .. if the record in the city is 12 everyone in that city is useless .. be proud to beat the city record for useless fags like you
mullet notwithstanding, Barnes was a monster in shot. I remember watching a lot of him, Godina and Jim Doehring (even if he was a needle-fiend) when I threw in high school.
I Do Track I Usually Sprint But I Threw For An Invite Im In 8th Grade And I Threw An 8lb Shot 35.7 Feet Which Wasnt Too Bad For A First Time But Im Fast And I Do The 200 Meter But I Didnt Do Too Bad Im Only 155 Lbs My Best Friend Does Shot And Hes 210 Lbs And Only Throws A 39 Im No Pro At Shot But I Took 3rd Place It Got Me A Medal So I Was Happy
im in florida and i got school goin on.... i found a trainer to work with and im gonna see her over the summer.. i dont even have the lunge form down yet
depends on the weight usually 8 pounds is what a 8th grader or 14-15 yr old throws,in my school and im 16 i throw a 12 lb 54-55 ft which is usually enough to place first or second in most compititions in southwest iowa. when i was 15 i was throwing an 8 lb 45-46 ft so 38 is better than avg. may be enough to place in an event but probably not first.
its ok, it really just depends on form and weight of the shot, if thats an 8lb, then your above average, if its a 12, then your a average, work a little bit more and you'll be great. im your age and i throw a 12lb for 42ft
dude, ive only been doing this for less than a year and i have absolutly no form. i muscle it out there at 42ft.. i just started using the lunge. my first time with no guidance or coaching help, by teaching it to myself i threw 45ft
I have been training for 4 months. My first throw was 9.37 with 16 pounds. Now I'm over my first trow for 3 metters. In 4 months. We are training in Puerto Rico, if you want to come we put you in form and you can do the intent of throwing like me.

love how the announcer says Godina fouled his last throw before Barnes took his even though they reorder according to place in the last round

Look at Barnes' left leg... That's the worst shot put technique I have ever seen.
That shows that he really was on steorids also at the olympics 1996. Without steroids it's not possible to throw as far as he did.
