It is hard to understand or to find all good things unity gives you, but then you get use to it, it is just brilliant. First time i load it and couldn't find anything, i switch back to kubuntu. But i give it another shot with 11.10 realese and I'm happy to do so. Using it for 4 moths now and I'm still finding new useful things in unity. I hope ubuntu guys will polish unity, because it is far from being flawless and have some annoying bugs.
@algiuz Dont know why but Ubuntu 11.10 was just horrible for me.It was slow and moving a window around was incredibly choppy and laggy.I gave 2 chances to Ubuntu 11.10 and both times the experince was horrible. Now i m on Kubuntu 11.10 and KDE and its just wonderfull, every thing is smooth as silk and it works perfectly.
@RibaFish66 Well yes, ubuntu 11.10 is pretty bad i must say. It is slow, but i was talking about unity as a desktop itself. I switch to 12.04 few days ago and it just flying in my pc. It feels like 10 time faster than 11.10, loading times are crazy fast. You can feel it will be good LTS realese.
Ehh, Unity, Unity.. I really liked the Gnome 2.x look, but I have to tell I prefer Gnome 3 than Unity. Not to mention the HD video playback problem, 5 second playing, 1 second waiting..., and that annoying breaking line at the middle of the screen when playing dynamic frame changing videos that the basic Gnome 3 plays flawlessly... hmmm. I think something is not the best...
What is wrong with Unity? I like it... Just because it is a little different than the traditional way of computing it doesn't mean is bad. Besides It will get much better and improve with time as well!!! Let not be negative.... It is okay to give constructive criticism as oppose to destructive criticism.
I used ubuntu since about 2006 and I loved it. I could configure almost everything so that it suited my needs perfectly. Now with 11.10 you can't change to gnome anymore. You can install gnome but it just isn't the same. But you know at least it is space saving...on a 24 inch screen. The freedom is gone, you can change nothing without installing packages. They completely destroyed the individuality for the unity. I'm currently looking for a new distro WITH A FREAKING TASKBAR.
Well yes your right for the sucky or bad laptops the changes to ubuntu may not be the best but for all the users like me who use it as a second OS to do all my daily stuff and using 7 when i wanna game, is it not a big problem becuse i have a pc which easily can handle ubuntu without lagg. Yes it was faster before but Ubuntu also need to look into the future most people want things with good look now a days and yes it maybe slow it a little more but its still one of the Fastest OS out there ;P
Seems to be more netbook based which i don't like on my desktop, I have to say this is a step up from the old 11.04 and they really could make unity beautiful if enough time is put into it but it seems to complex need to be Broken down for simplicity but if they keep bringing advancement like so to it then it could become a great distro that can compete with Macintosh and hopefully windows (grr)
I recently installed Unity as part of a dual boot system with Win7. Done this in the past with earlier versions of Ubuntu and had good experiences. However after a day with this I was extremely frustrated. Forcing me to type in an app's name to run something is very annoying, and the replacement for synaptic equally so. When it comes to the bar at the top, if I wanted a Mac I'd buy one. I was able to reinstall classic after a search found how to on UBUNTU GENIUS. Swapping to SUSE next time.
@bathellfire Yes you've got it right. Ubuntu finally reached an OS that could attract Windows users and they fucked it up with Unity. Idiots ! Well done lads, not only have you ensured that Windows users will run a mile when they see Unity but you've also managed to lose half of your loyal Ubuntu crowd. Duh !
Unity is the biggest peice 'o crap, I am seriously bummed that Ubuntu has chosen this path. The navigation menu is a complete disaster, it's much much slower then the classic menu and it makes finding any application a total nightmare.
@mrdrumsauce you got that right..old gnome 2 is the best atleast ubuntu 11.04 has option to log on classic desktop.when 11.04 support ends.. what can i say ...RIP ubuntu!
@mrdrumsauce To be fair, the UI design community in general seems to have gone completely insane. Unity, Gnome Shell, Windows 8, etc.
Personally, I prefer using the Dash over pointer-driven menus on laptops. Touchpads in general are just a huge pain to use, and Unity fixes that quite well. It's a shame that it eschews ANY support for menu-driven applaunching, though. I'll just stick to XFCE on my desktop, personally.
The unity is slow and too many steps to take. It's not intuitive. I switched to the previous 2d gnome and i actually made it look like a windows xp interface. I got rid of the top panel and just kept the one on the bottom. I added the start menu button(forgot what you call it in ubuntu) to the left side of the panel, it's an icon. and modified the folders to resemble the xp start menu. All programs and accessories all under "All Programs". Tools and utilities under "Control Panel".
da unity is really simple to use. jus like windows open da search prompt or use da icons on da bar...simple. lot easier then clickin on a bunch of stuff. too much complainin for nuffin. srsly.
I installed it, it works now, I'm browsing the internet with it now = ) I got cube effect fire effect, rain effect wobbly windows, motion blur to work and AMD drivers installed fine, and I am using Crossfired HD5770s and Phenom II x4 965 4gb DDr3 1600. Replaced Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Still can't get the Cairo Dock to work properly, it freezes my desktop, i don't know why. Oh and I'm still looking for more apps, I got VUZE yesterday = )
To all those people complaining about ubuntu 11.10, You have no clue how much freedom you have, you seem to forget that THIS IS LINUX!!!! If you don't like what you have, you can always change it and get what you want, there are plenty more awesome desktop managers out there available to ubuntu than you can ever think of. I would recommend xfce, lxde and kde for a start in hope of discovering even greater treasures like xmonad, awm etc. And you know what, you can have them all at your disposal.
for an OS that's supposed to be aimed at everyday PC users, it shouldn't require installing KDE or GNOME to change the desktop. It's NOT user friendly.
@codeythesilent Maybe so, I would recommend the new 'everyday users' who want to switch to linux to strictly do a bit of research for the distro available with what they want in mind, (just like when you want to buy a pc or software), that way you'll pick what you want knowing what to expect. This even includes when upgrading, and make sure you have backup of the older version you are used to in case you don't like the changes. Gnome 2.x was great, I still have it on my installation disk :)
@codeythesilent Well, some beg to differ. I think it's much more friendly than any OS that is so rigid and can barely have any customizations to it, especially if it's also very expensive. In the end it depends on what you want, Ubuntu 11.10 is pretty good in my opinion though I think there is room for further development, some people like it, and I mean everyday users who wouldn't even consider finding another DE. Personally, I switched to KDE as it's a bit lighter on my slow emachines.
I'm not sure what the complaints are. Ubuntu 11.10 is quite stable. I find 11.10's Unity DE to be more stable than its predecessors. Compiz is fully compatible, and you can still create and add custom themes as you desire. You folks complaining about freedom of choice being lost just need to do a bit more research. Thats the fun of linux. LEARN how to create your custom settings. Ubuntu hasn't taken customization, NOR the capacity to LEARN, away from you.
@jathanator True that, I personally don't think unity or the new gnome shell are as bad as people say they are. They are just different, explorative and fairly innovative, if you don't allow change then there will never be progress. Sure there are some problems I have with the two, but in the end this is linux what's the big deal? In the end if you don't like it you can just install another desktop manager of your own choice.
I will always support people that want to introduce new things, BUT I WILL ALSO DEFEND FREEDOM OF CHOICE. And now Unity HAS TAKEN AWAY my freedom to customize the user interface TO WORK AS I WANT, i.e. to keep working with 11.04 Gnome interface. Who was that moron that decided to "push" the users into new graphic interface?
@LaCosaNostra917 - you make a reasonable point - but we've been playing with 'Netbook'style desktops since before Mutter/Clutter gave rise to Ubuntu Netbook. They did it better than we did, then! @BelatedShrimpy I think it's a step in the right direction but needs to be more polished and improved on is all, I feel some people have what I'm gonna call "culture shock" as far as GUIs go...now i fully understand opensource being able to customize your system to behave and look how ever you want it to, this can still be done with tweaks..to solve the issue, i propose maybe a none unity version sorta like a gnoke vs KDE thing to users who dont like the new direction.
@avariado The colors of Ubuntu are really nasty, but luckily you can change everything yourself. Just download a theme or use a built-in. Or use Linux Mint instead of Ubuntu.
"Linus Torvalds called GNOME 3 an 'unholy mess' and said that the user experience is unacceptable, adding that because of GNOME 3, he has ditched GNOME for Xfce. He said that Xfce is a step down from GNOME 2 — but a huge step up from GNOME 3."
I think unity is the main reason many people will abandon Linux. I prefer the gnome. On the contrary, the so called gnome-shell can not be compared to the original gnome which was highly custimizable. I'm really sorry, but unity is not good at all.
GRRRRR! HEY Ubuntu developers!!!!!!! I want my 11.04 desktop BACK! You are really messing with peoples FREEDOM OF CHOICE and tricked me to accept the upgrade and then forced me to use your new shitty 11.10 graphical interface, while I had EVERYTHING nice and working with the old desktop.
What I really hate is that when you're on your brower and you want to open your file directory, you can't just move your mouse the the left and click like it was in 11.04. Now you're obliged to go back on the desktop or press the windows key, then click on your file directory.. Doesn't this suck?
Does anyone know if they fixed the problem of having a lot of stuff open? As in if you have 5 or 6 docs open it is nice to just see them all so you can click on them in the taskbar. In Windows 7 they overcame this by doing the hover thing.
I know that they still show everything in the launchpad no matter which screen you're in. I thought the old way was awesome by breaking up what your working on and only showing it in the taskbar in the screen you're working on, but maybe I'll get over it.
Unity Blows, Im going to a good gnome distro.... or maybe KDE. I liked gnome because it was simple and didn't overdo the friggin effects. MAH this sucks.
Kubuntu 11.10 is where it's at.. I am obsessed with it.. Even just booting off a usb stick, everything works instantly, wireless dongle, printer, webcam, phone connects to it, no cds required to get things working.. All this from a 700mb download.. It puts windows to shame.
To boot off a usb, download kubuntu and then download freeware program called Unetbootin and select the file you downloaded and that's it!! Boot and be merry!
@fatriff Drivers for Kubuntu are from the kernel and aren't DE exclusive, everything would work perfectly in Ubuntu of any of its other spins as they use a common kernel.
It amazes me the linux communities ability to complain about everything- why dont you all go back to old distros and stop whining about the change that scares you so much?
way to go.....unity is slow...its not about performance...but on general view...indeed is easier to navigate but maybe for the newbies....i'm an advanced user, programmer and i tend to use tons of windows opened across all 4 workspaces...in a few clicks i could do everything...with unity i'm twice as slower than before
@bbhgootube what the hell? Windows ME pretty to look at ? It was fugly and crashed all the time. Ubuntu 11.10 hasnt crashed to me once, except for when I changed catalyst settings. Just compare how fast ubuntu 11 is in comparison to any windows system.
how is this an improvement?? unity is so bad that LInux mint is now more popular than ubuntu

@fatriff Drivers for Kubuntu are from the kernel and aren't DE exclusive, everything would work perfectly in Ubuntu of any of its other spins as they use a common kernel.
Sashin9000 5 months ago
@Sashin9000 That's not always the case as it's the software which is usually at fault not the driver but the software which is utilizing it.

Not going anywhere near until they allow applets on the top bar again.

It amazes me the linux communities ability to complain about everything- why dont you all go back to old distros and stop whining about the change that scares you so much?

@OmniLemur exactly....and it's always, such minuscule stupid things. drives me crazy

way to go.....unity is slow...its not about performance...but on general view...indeed is easier to navigate but maybe for the newbies....i'm an advanced user, programmer and i tend to use tons of windows opened across all 4 workspaces...in a few clicks i could do everything...with unity i'm twice as slower than before
DanutzzzL2Hero 5 months ago
@DanutzzzL2Hero Its faster if you do it right, which means relying on search and keyboard over mouse.
Sashin9000 5 months ago
@Sashin9000 yeah but this is 2011 not 1995, keyboard shortcuts?? Give me a break!!
fatriff 5 months ago
@fatriff What's that supposed to even mean? Choose what's more efficient, using the keyboard is simply faster than using a mouse...
Sashin9000 5 months ago
@DanutzzzL2Hero Exactly my situation, which is why i'm on Kubuntu now.. I can't believe I ignored it before, it's the dogs bollocks!
fatriff 5 months ago
@DanutzzzL2Hero Have you tried using Debian with wmii?

@MySweetcutie install Ubuntu Tweak. Run it and click on GNOME settings. There, disable "system-wide recent document list".

Ubuntu 11.10 out of the box freshly installed.... reminds me of Windows ME... pretty to look at but pretty useless to use.
bbhgootube 4 months ago
@bbhgootube what the hell? Windows ME pretty to look at ? It was fugly and crashed all the time. Ubuntu 11.10 hasnt crashed to me once, except for when I changed catalyst settings. Just compare how fast ubuntu 11 is in comparison to any windows system.
starpier 4 months ago
@gxoptg It's either that or the extremely crappy GNOME 3
MrPressThat 3 months ago
@gxoptg I like 11.04 better because of gnome. Hell, I like Ubuntu 11.04 better than Windows 7.
TheComputerSage 3 months ago
@gxoptg Hide the side dock and get real dock [opengl]. Yes it looks like mac but it is 100% more functional and much more fun.

Ew. really not digging the Ubuntu logo in the launcher. It needs to stay up in the corner like it's always been. :/
