The Mothman Prophecies is similar to tales told by people around the state of Mexico called Colima called 'Los Osos De Satanas' or The Satanic Bears. Supposedly, in the neighboring woods, townspeople walking in the night, see mysterious shadows of tall, often breathing very hard, silohuettes of humanoid bears with descriptions said in the novel, with glowing crimson eyes but without wings, who seem to jump to such superhuman levels. My grandpa claimed he saw this Satanic Bears once as a kid.

In San Antonio and S. Texas there is a legend of a devil in the form of a owl that follows it's victims. The mothman stories and pics remind me of it.
