I just did mine @ 81k. Ran the tank to about 1/4 left, added seafoam and ran it to less than an 1/8 tank(almost empty). Let it warm up and pulled the plugs and none of them broke. I have an 04' with the original plugs.
u can get a removal kit and do it urself. and save $750. just make sure u do it right. like that mechanic said, dont use too much carbon cleaner or u cause hydro-locking. if u end up having to use more cleaner than recomended then crank the engine after removing the plugs with ignition disabled. that clears out the cleaner fluid.
All of my Ford owning friends that break my stones about my GMC truck are having problems. It seems that they are upset that GM took the bailout. Ford didn't and are threfore "more American". Their quote, not mine.
Maybe Ford should have taken the bailout and invested the money in engineering a product that doesn't have spark plugs that self remove while driving or break off upon removal.
My 93 F150 cured me of Ford for life. Bad paint, bad wiring. No dealer help.
I don't understand what your saying. How in the world would the NON threaded part stay in the cylinder head? I work on these a lot. @pigwoodskater We also use this practice, but we also use a 3/8" impact to remove them. It is mainly caused by the buildup of carbon around the base of the plug. I think the vibration of the impact loosens it up enough to not snap them off!

We just had 6 break on a customers car and the ceramic and the electrode fell into the cylinder. Everyone said we would have to pull the head off because it is so far down in there and the spark plug hole is slightly smaller than 10 mm.
We ended up using a borescope with an attachment and some sticky butyl tape and fished the piece out.
Will put in a coil or coils when a missfire code appears.Had this happen after changing plugs on a 2006 F150,had two dead cylinders. The coils went bad and were $100.00 a piece. Most of the Ford Garages don't use Ford's tool, use Lisle's updated tool kit part number 65600.Ford has changed the interval changing the spark plugs on these to 30,000 miles to prevent them from breaking off.
@wafrederick having this very same thing happening to me now...just had my tune up at 80,000 miles now i have two dead cylinders... what a joke!!! this should not be happening. ive had nothing but problems with this truck!!!
@8fx4 Ford does have tons of problems with coils going bad and are badly made from the factory. Most auto parts stores stock the coils on these on the 3 valve tritons including the 1999-2003 triton engines since they are a huge problem.
@wafrederick i have a 2001 ford f150 with 167,000 miles and it has only blew one spark plug in its life. its a really good engine i love them better than the chevys 5.3 and 6.0 we had a 2000 chevy silverado with a 5.3 and it started falling apart internally at 34k miles. then the 6.0 was a 2001 and engine started knocking at 45k miles will never buy a chevy again and also the ford we bought it used at 9k miles while both chevys new at 46 miles and the 6.0 at 0.0 miles

@wafrederick All makes have their problems. I have my 98 F150 Triton. I replaced all the spark plug holes with stainless inserts my self when I bought it . and always use anti seize on new plugs. Dodge has tranny problems constantly on their cars and trucks. Chevy has trouble with rust happening early on frames and body panels. Ford has electrical computer trouble constantly. As of now I am building a 99 F150 Ford truck short bed with an old recently rebuilt Chevy 350 small block.
@kevykev38 Dodge does not have transmission problems and I never seen one fail.I seen one 1992 Dodge transmission fail with over 350,000 miles on it,owner never had the fluid and filter changed unitl 300,000 miles. Most yards can't sell the 5 speed automatics in the Dodge trucks,no call for them and don't break.Sell these dirt cheap,$200.00.My father likes Dodge and you will never get him in a Ford.Does not want junk and has good luck with Dodges.

@kevykev38 Even my Matco tool dealer and my father's friend Harold hate Fords. The 6.0s in the ambulances don't hold up called blown up.Ford covers up too.At the factory, the windshield sealing area was not done right and leaked. There was a TSB and Ford pulled it!Takes out the GEM module too which has to be replaced after resealing the windshield and programed with their scan tool. Now they have problems with the new 2011 Mustang with the new 5.0 burning up.Ford has not done a thing yet on this.
@wafrederick Man even the Matco dealer hates Fords thats terrible..........wait do they still make Matco tools? I could have sworn they went under, nobody uses those crappy tools, so a tool dealer that makes and sells junk ...............
@tubesteak0u812 Look in the drawer of my father's toolbox at work,99.9% of his Snap On tools are worn out. This is mainly his sockets and smaller sized wrenches. Most shops love getting fords in,make huge money off of them.Look at places hauling trailers for a living, you won't see a ford for a reason.Don't want them and not reliable.See lot of Dodges with the cummins
@kevykev38 Over the last four years, my department has replaced most of the Ford ambulances running the 6.0 for Chevy chasis rigs. @ModularMadMan The dealer said that was considered normal...I think a 2002, but it was a 5.4 Super Duty..though the dealer can be full of shit...but we just took it as fact.
Just to let any 2004-2007 Ford F-150 5.4 3v Triton Engine owner know, there's now a class action lawsuit currently going on about this problem that Ford had created and now is our problem.Call this attorney Jeff Goldenberg,he's an attorney from Ohio.1-513-345-8297. I am currently starting this in the state of Florida....
@ManswerGuy I have a 2006 f150 with the 5.4 and only 53,000 miles but I want to change the plugs. Tell me more about the lawsuit because im in Ohio and I think Ford should change these plugs for free.
Only $750? I'm a ford tech and let me tell you, it's not as simple as it sounds. The porcelin part NEVER comes out easy, no matter what you soak it in. You have to locktite pins through the center of them (if the electrode comes out) and then try to extract it. THEN you can tap and pull out the metal cap. Getting them out is a merical.
My advice is switch to the champion one peice plug ASAP and get rid of the two piece OEM.
I have the 04 triton and we soaked the plug and unthreaded them slowly while spraying them on the way out as well and had no problems. Then copper coated the new ones before putting them in.
Champion Spark Plugs can't help you get the old Motorcraft plugs out, but we have the plug you need to put back in. Champion 7989 has a solid one piece machined shell:
O.k. guys,I do 2-4 of these a day when we are busy at my shop.you get the engine HOT HOT HOT,remove all coils, pcm with bracket.then I use a butterfly impact with a spark plug socket,4 inch extension, swivel and 36 inch extension.then go back and forth with the butterfly impact.the jarring action of the impact will extract the plugs, but be patient!! and go slow, you will not damage threads even though the gospel says never use air tools on plugs,it works like a charm.and do not use anti-seize!
exactly, just a big cover up at ford, its disgusting that they are doing this to americans, the least they can do is do it at a reduced price!! it might take that dealership catching fire to get decency through their heads, my truck is a ticking timebomb, YAY!!!!!
mrjohnnybiscuit, thats just the tip of the iceberg!! 97-2003 ford triton 4.2,5.4,6.8's have sparkplug blowouts that arent even worth fixing, its that bad!!!!!
This is a little funny... Let the truck soak overnight with a little wd40. Do not take the spark plug out while the engine is hot. The engine has to be ice cold. Crack the plug lose and soak it again. Work it back and forth and the take them out. Put a little anti seize on the new ones & torque to factory spec. And only use ford plugs on this deal... I work on them everyday....
I work for a ford dealer as a licensed technician. you CAN prevent these plugs from breaking with a proper procedure. if you dont wait to long. If they are pulled out every 50 km you will not have a problem. and the most that has ever broken on me was 2 in one engine, and we charge 1.0 hour per plug that breaks for additional time. it isnt that bad, AND DO NOT put in champion plugs, you will have more troubles than you want. ford ones will just have to be put back in, a waste of a 4 hour tune up
The SST # is LIS65600 DLT. It will get these plugs out every time in less than an hour. Let the car sit for one cold soak and run for 5 min before you start.
Do it sooner than later, the longer you leave the plugs in the more they weld. Make sure they plugs get soaked for a loooong time penetrating oil before they try to get them out. Have the Ford dealer do it. I can't believe Ford makes their customers financially responsible for this.
There is a class action lawsuit against them now. If you really want to get these out, buy a special tool from Lisle just for these fords. It will take 15 mins per bank no matter how many break off. I just done one 4 days ago and got 4 hours labor for 50 min of work. The part # is Lis65600 DLT.
@mrjohnnybiscuit I have a question, i have a 2004 Ford F-150 and it seems that i don't have enough rpm's, my engine sometimes shut's down, can it be from the spark plugs? it has 75K miles.
@mrjohnnybiscuit I have a question, i have a 2004 Ford F-150 and it seems that i don't have enough rpm's, my engine sometimes shut's down, can it be from the spark plugs? it has 75K miles.
Oh God my 04' f150 has about 70k miles on it and the plugs havent been replaced yet.I dread having to take this into a shop and have it done. However Champion plugs have made a 1 piece design to replace the old Ford plugs that break off.Better make sure i have a "full" wallet when i need the plugs done!

O.k. guys,I do 2-4 of these a day when we are busy at my shop.you get the engine HOT HOT HOT,remove all coils, pcm with bracket.then I use a butterfly impact with a spark plug socket,4 inch extension, swivel and 36 inch extension.then go back and forth with the butterfly impact.the jarring action of the impact will extract the plugs, but be patient!! and go slow, you will not damage threads even though the gospel says never use air tools on plugs,it works like a charm.and do not use anti-seize!

exactly, just a big cover up at ford, its disgusting that they are doing this to americans, the least they can do is do it at a reduced price!! it might take that dealership catching fire to get decency through their heads, my truck is a ticking timebomb, YAY!!!!!

mrjohnnybiscuit, thats just the tip of the iceberg!!

Let the car sit for one cold soak and run for 5 min before you start.

is that because of the MAJOR sparkplug blow out problems that you have to reuse new ford plugs?

Do it sooner than later, the longer you leave the plugs in the more they weld. Make sure they plugs get soaked for a loooong time penetrating oil before they try to get them out. Have the Ford dealer do it. I can't believe Ford makes their customers financially responsible for this.

I'm gonna try to trmove mine on my 89 ford f 150.
Diid the plugs on my wife's 97 Geo tracker and broke one of the plugs off
Kinda nervous about trying this on my truck

Your relic 89 F150 does not suffer from this spark plug design. Consider yourself lucky, and remember kids,....... Dont buy Ford.
