  • Who else stared at that guys unibrow the entire intro

  • Geography 150 THE Ohio State University!

  • Someone who's not in school and uses the internet to enrich himself instead of watching dumb viral videos of babies and people getting hit in the nuts, thumbs up.

  • English 3815: Post-Colonial Literature. UNB. :)

  • Liar Liar palestinian on fire.

  • @MrElmarwan political trolling. DICK HEAD.

  • Pace University! International Political Economy & Globalization class!!

  • In part 2 of this video series around the 7:00 minute mark he says, "As recently as last year, in 1996, . . .," making this interview sometime in 1997.

  • When was this interview conducted?

  • Art History II, UCCS

  • Bernard Lewis is one such lens...

/watch?v=02nssV7wsaw ....absolutely sickening. Using the "it's them over there that are the problem" to hide the Luddite problem at home.

  • The ignorance of some of the comments is mind boggling

  • Edward you are sorely missed

  • Excellent documentary.

  • UMBC!!!

  • @MrBloograss Ibn Warraq is no genuine scholar. His work on Islam is rejected by most scholars except anti Muslim bigots.

  • @MrBloograss Well at least he did LOADS, TONS more for them than Arafat and Hamas. Ibn Warraq ascribes to the same "clash of civilizations" bullshit story that Said's tried to dispel all his life. Said always pursued an eventual mesh of civilization not a confrontation, something that had happened in India and other parts of the world over the centuries. Warraq is analogous to Nehru in that he took on the mentality that there was something inherently corrupt about his background.

  • Very interesting interview. Thanks a lot for sharing...

  • I looked at this after Andrew Breitbart said Obama was inspired by Edward Said, I cannot believe Andrew Breitbart has guided me towards many great works.

  • Edward Said Whaaat?

  • I LOVE THIS! PEOPLE NEED TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES MORE IN ORDER TO REALLY GRASP WHAT HE IS SAYING.

  • Why I like his work? It actually speaks of manipulation, western ideology created by those that have some real benefit there... What makes it so grand is that you can actually relate it to all those regarded as Other; Negroes, women, certain nations... so we are not just talking about Orientals, we are talking about all those who are subjected, made inferior etc. You can relate it to the book written by Frantz Fanon, Black Skin White masks and you will see a great deal of similarities.

    RESPECT

  • @sahrawiyya Well said. Thanks for saying it too.

  • Art History Survey II at UNT!

  • @nazzj0n I totally agree, I admire him and his work so much

  • for those that think he is pro islam: said is right but that does not mean he agreed with islam or muslims. his argument is that the lens by which the west looks at the "dark" world is based on imperialism. his study has notihng to do with islam basically west against east. as a christian arab, im sure he was very familiar and against the horrors of islam

  • @bebzelle The horrors of Islam are second to the horrors of Christianity. It is highly idiotic to consider that a complete faith is based on "horror". That is the main concept Edward Said preached.

  • very good video

  • @SNOsquaredP dude are you stupid or what? seriously! theres a thing in ur head called the brain please use that 5% of ur brain and do some research

  • @mabzy2009 get educated please, and learn what ideology is...and then we will talk and discuss..

  • summary of orientalism: Westerners first created a prejudiced image of East in Middle Ages.

Then, they went to "East" and gathered knowledge of East" but this knowledge did not correct their biased image, on the contrary their biased opinion shaped how they perceive and categorize this "oriental" knowledge. Then, they formed an established Orient based on that distorted knowledge. Then, they invaded "East" using this distorted image as an excuse for their actions. Simple as that.

  • cant believe that this page was visited by 24 idiots (the 24 people who disliked this video)

  • it was one of the few people came from Middle East and as Christian he defended the mixed culture and faiths in this land of conflict. he explained outsiders two sided justice when it comes to Israel and others. Allah Bless his soul and increase the amount of people like him in the world.

  • @GreatGrumbledook Yes, of course. We would all like to meet your retarded father instead. Fuck off.

  • @TheFreePisces: Fellow, I know you as a knave; a rascal; an eater of broken meats; a base, proud, shallow, beggarly, three-suited, hundred-pound, filthy, worsted-stocking knave; a lily-livered, action-taking knave, a whoreson, glass-gazing, super-serviceable finical rogue; one-trunk-inheriting slave; one that wouldst be a bawd, in way of good service, and is nothing but the composition of a knave, beggar, coward, pandar, and the son and heir of a mongrel bitch: ...

  • @TheFreePisces: ...one whom I will beat into clamorous whining, if you deny the least syllable of your addition.

  • @MrLukasart You are very weak minded, this is a documentary. Propaganda is a separate entity, but then again what is there to expect from a typical brain washed lunatic that labels any thoughtful academic insight as "propaganda". Ludicrous imbeciles must have been breeding well in the past few decades, they are everywhere.

  • Comment removed

  • @MrLukasart I wouldn't do such a thing, I'm not a redneck. However, I have fucked your mother on multiple occasions. She is a typical retarded piece of shit with a dried up pussy, but do not worry I know how to make her real nice and wet. You fucked around with the wrong person there bitch, watch yourself little cunt.

  • @TheFreePisces Essentially, in order to subjugate the Irish, the people of the Middle East or anyone you seek to subjugate, you must dehumanize them, see them as a sort of mind object, you depict them as another, it's like categorizing them in a certain way as different from you to justify occupying them, controlling them. The British did it with the Irish, the West in general did it with the Middle East. One can say that people from the East did it others when they were powerful.

  • لقد حارب بالقلم

  • He is a brilliant man, he makes people realize that everyone has bias and when looking at any culture, you must acknowledge that bias but even then it is extremely difficult to fully understand that culture.

  • One of the first books I read during my PhD program. It was a nuclear intellectual bomb! His thesis is amazingly relative to how our society approach the concept of "the other."

  • happy birth day professor

  • Originally, they were called Orientalists.

They've since "evolved" into weeaboos (kawaii-desu!) and rednecks (fukin' Chah-neeze/Japs/Turks/Jews/Moozlumz!).

Admittedly I'm a bit Orientalist myself (weeaboo), and only discovered the term yesterday, but since doing so I've been re-evaluating a lot of things, particularly my conceptions of most of the world, and just how little I know... about anything.

  • صدقني شعرك فلم

  • There are some human beings whose doings make one ashamed to be a human being. And there are some human beings who make us proud. One such person was Edward Said. May God rest his soul.

  • I prefer Said when he had a beard.

  • A PRAYER FOR PALESTINE FROM A JEW: Let us help them to create something extraordinary, just as we have for ourselves-it is in our best interest to do so.Let us help them to build a home they will love with all their hearts, as we love Israel!Wouldn’t we both be foolish to risk damaging something so precious? We are both great nations…let us never forget this.Let us nurture peace with our enemies, and recognize that they are a mirror…reflecting light unto the nations.

  • I think this man is amazing and raises great points! The "west" does have a way of misrepresenting the "other" or unrealistically portraying their cultures or reality of their life styles. Of course like any human being as he also states in his book, he is somewhat biased on some views especially when he addresses the issue of Islam and the "west", it is hard to tell because his book is supposed to be a critique of other scholarly works on orientalism!

  • I recommend Ibn Warraq "Defense of the West". A critique of Edward Said's orientalism. It really demolishes Edward Said and his major ideas.

  • Excuse me, I'm an italian studious of orientalism...may i know the title of this interview, the date and the channel of pubblication and the name of the interviewer? I'm working to a job of orientalism and I want to cite this interview...thank you!

  • he´s an arab? but he looks and sounds so american :)

  • @tatazavilastroynik

    he is palestinian :)

  • @tatazavilastroynik Pray-tell, what does it mean to "look" and "sound" American?

  • @tatazavilastroynik

You can't "look" American because its not a ethnicity.

He has an American accent be because he was raised in America.

The Middle East is a very diverse place. There is no set "look", you can be brown or blonde.

    Anyway,

Edward Said was a genius; I have also felt that the West misrepresents the East and that there is a inferiority complex with the West, because they have a strong motive to make the Eastern culture and civilisation seem irrational and savage.

  • @asopaso07

You also can't "look" American because, like the Middle East, it is a very diverse place made up of a wide variety of cultures. Its true that there may be a certain dominant culture that manifests itself in a certain look, mannerism, or belief but as time has gone on it is less and less reflected by the majority.

That's off topic from what you were saying, of course. I just thought the similarity to what you just said was striking.

  • @asopaso07 As far as looking America, too many times you have people who think that if you're Caucasian but have dark hair and olive skin, then you're not an American. You can black, blond, or whatever and still be American, but it's still too connected to the WASP idea.

  • Great vid! I am working on The East-West dichotomy, very similar problematic. Please have a look. Cheers.

  • Excellent video (thanks to Jayelle for recommendation)

To Ashivana on your question below about the music at the start of the video - the music is 'The Offering' by Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass, it is on the album 'Passages'.

  • Is it Edward Said the famous male prostitute?

  • Great video. The book Orientalist is a difficult read, so its great to understand it from Prof Said's words itself.

Can someone tell me what's the music in the beginning.... Thank you.

  • I am wondering if isn't true with any other culture?

  • It is sad that the western world (myself included in this) are simply products of our ideology. Only through knowledge can we hope to escape that and it's unfortunate that most westerners will never take the time to open their minds to this. I wish more Universities in Europe and the U.S. would teach Edward Said's work.

  • @hollishillis But that's the thing, if you look more into Slavok Zizek - another theorist like Said - we really can't escape ideology because the moment we become conscious of ideology, we form another ideology...it keeps reinventing itself. Ideology is the social reality in which we now live in. And dats too damn sad.

  • @afr0flava That's a great point. Althusser suggested that through knowledge and work in the ISA we can at least become aware of our ideology even though we may never be able to escape it =[ I guess at least recognizing it is a step forward.

  • @afr0flava On the contrary, Zizek's work must be read, as he constantly reminds us as Lacanian and Marxist. The reason why he engages in the field is precisely to outline, analyse and, most importantly critique ideology. To undertake these tasks requires (at least the possibility of a) space outside ideology. Or, to say it another way, the actual point of the work is to show that ideology is not a "thing" (that may or may not be excapable), but a particular relationship between people.

  • dont listen to that sodium fan fukker...he' s one of those dumbass extremists jus like saddam. i am muslim and promise me we dont all think like idiots like that. muslims are peaceful its just these stupid fuks that ruin our image

  • @gunnersgo18dummie join us muhammed we will rule over the west and paint it with the blood of white children, it is Allah's wish

  • He replaces Orientalism with Occidentalism. The European is always ingnorant, racist and bent on imperial domination. In his book he makes no mention of Islam's domination of much of the western world from the late 600's to the 1500's. Nor does it mention the body of modern Anti Western literature that has grown to support Wahhabism.

  • @ianforallseasons everyone was ignorant in one lifetime or another.show me someone other than a baby who wasn't ignorant and i'll give everything i own to that person.

  • Sut Jhally needs to buy a second eyebrow.

  • @sodiumfan

"Saddam was a great man, he just got bad press...he actually did a great job killing many innocent arabs....RIP"

can you actually hear yourself??? killing innocence... yeah man.. awesome.. people like you are the reason everyone thinks islam is fucked.. coz look at what you think?? crazy much??

  • Man, most of the stupid comments on here makes me so mad, more dirt rubbed into this great man's theories with all the ignorance! Fuck you racist Westerners and stupid muslim fundementalists!

  • fuck u saddam kept the persians at bay and killed anyone who fcuked with iraq integrity. he killed equally! iraq can only be ruled by a saddam. now its ruled by iran. hope u fcuking neocon zionist pigs are happy.

  • @sodiumfan i just realized this guy comes back to this video every few days to post an ignorant comment lol.

  • scary crazy fanatic people (person) on youtube! ahhhhhhhh

    what else is new

  • Edward Said is a wise teacher, he knows the Middle East is a shithole full of Pakis and Jews, he knows the obvious solution is just to nuke the fuck out of it, what a clever man

  • who is condemning my preaching, show yourselves you coward infidels.....god has seen your evil actions and he will smite you come judgement day.....hail akbah!!!

  • @sodiumfan

    you stupid fuck.

  • you will burn in the firey depths of hell non-believer...kalashnikoffs will slaughter your mother and father....Allah sees all

  • @sodiumfan hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. WOW you're pretty serious about that. Have you ever thought in your life.. What if you are wrong.. and the majority of the population of the world, from fanatics from all religions to athiests might... wait for it.... just NOT die burning in Hell. Your views disgust me, well, keep them just don't preach on this page. Unless you're joking, are you joking?

  • @sodiumfan are you gay?

  • The Bible? Thats not very christian behavior you are demonstrating there. You are officially a victim of not being able to understand anything other than your self. Congrats.

  • you misguided fool, apocalypse is nigh upon us...god will judge us all... the middle east will burn with the blood of demons....

  • Ignore any religious comment, all pro God or anti Said comments with religion as a basis are ill placed. Said was original in his allocation of attention, and I believe quite right in his highlighting of western attitudes. The arguments as to his assumptions are of interest, but are not sufficient to undermine the value of his work.

  • wow Mr. Edward Said was a really smart guy. This is first time I saw his interview and I love him. He is so true about orientalism, US and Europe always put east down and they look at people like they are uneducated and undeveloped people. In fact that is not true, they are very develop people only some area with war is not develop. The

  • But he's still talented, offers an interesting perspective, and worth reading

  • he died

  • I think he's a good writer, but his theories are totally unoriginal (he takes all his ideas from foucault, just reapplies them to oriental studies) and quite biased.

  • hahaha

damn you racist retards, you're so funny you can even make an arab laugh at you!

  • you will burn in the firey depths of hell arab one, mark my words, god will help the west destroy the east, full of arab demon devil children, read the bible and save yourself before it is too late...

  • Allah, God or YHWH does not exist, so how can anyone hinder his rule? Even if it existed would he not be by definition immune to any kind of hindrance?

  • not my words infidel, they are the words of the holy prophet Abu Hamza, now bow down to Q'Allah Bin Sheik and pray for forgiveness

  • Blowing yourself up will do it.

  • "thank the lord" this sounds like you are preaching hate. What would Jesus think about your hateful comments.

  • God bless Mr Edward Said. He truly was a God given gift to humans. Very few decent man like him exists in the world.

  • @nazzj0n

Yeah, It's a shame he died a while back in 2003...

  • Comment removed

  • Well, actually, if you're referring to Edward Said, he's passed away. But, given the fact that he spoke Arabic fluently, and that most Sudanese speak Arabic, I think he would have done quite well there.

You, on the other hand - as a frightened murderously silly hateful pig-fed white boy American - would be terrified.

  • believe me i would last in sudan more than u and said lol...oh uhh sudan arabic not the same as levant lol

  • Projection will get you nowhere.

  • brougham conspiracy: i suugest that u read more about islam , cuz i think its hasty openion to judge a religion without concrete reasons and examples related to its principles, doctrines, and way of dealin with the others: namely the west , furthermore u accuse the religion in which alot of people believe the majority of people on this planet in matte fact , so go find more and read more before u put ur openion , at least to convince the others

  • hey thats insane

  • Said was very clear about how there is no homogeneous 'West' or 'East'. He was aware that no one is purely 'one thing.' He fought against the notion of 'the clash of civilizations' which has been brought back with a vengeance to further the neocolonial wars we are now in the midst of. He was an antiimperialist and a humanist.

  • I second that; here here!

  • he was also a bigot, a racist, and a terrible debater. he depended on logical fallacies to make his points, and then passed his judgments off as academic. i don't support his work, and i don't support his supporters simply because of his vitriolic argumentation.

  • @kfarm2001 - yes, he actually said that the east does not exists. at least not in the way that we see it. he's easy to listen to.

  • @123davaro

While on my bad days I am inclined to share your viewpoint (I am a white American, BTW), I also often wonder if this is simply a symptom of being the top of the hill (for now).

Being the top of the hill means being involved and implicated in every little thing that happens around the world--it's a function of size and influence.

Much of what the US has done is good. Much of it is not.

  • Anybody know where the piece of music at the start is from???

  • You offer some very enlightening videos. Thank You very much for posting!

    peace.

  • Remember Neda? Said is why Columbia welcomes with open arms fruitcakes like Ahmedinajad. Islam is fundamentally repressive and anti-democratic. Violently misogynist, it is the most xenophobic and religiously fanatical worldview extant today. Is it really that difficult to see? By all means, take your pick. But I promise you when fighting in Londonistan and the Banlieu are raging house to house, America will be sitting it out because Europe is lost. So long! Farewell!

  • yeah, yeah, yeah...and how hard is it to understand the US have killed more civilians from any region than any of those so-called "xenophobic" and "fanatic" people living in Arabistan...

You are the scum of the earth...I just hope one day, all the ethnic minorities in the Us open a war to that White supremacy of yours...Go and die America!

  • If knew anything about Islam, you would know that Islam in it's core is actually alot more democratic than Christianity for example.

  • Nicely said. Muslims in the past engaged in a process of consultation (after Muhammad passed away) to select/elect a person who was deemed appropriate to lead the Islamic community. Consultation is an important characteristic of modern democracy, is it not?

  • really, a democratic God? I really should have voted.

  • Um..And where was I when the pope was elected? If you look at certain phrases in the Quran ull find that Islam calls for some sort of a leadership, and that the leader needs to be agreed upon by the people. Its the peoples right to overthrow the leader if he is not sutiable for the job anymore.

If u look at countries that are predominantly muslim, you wont always find that their governemnts are elected democratically, but that has nothing to do with Islam. In the end it comes down to power.

  • In no way could a 'Muslim' nation be representative of Islam, how could it be? Political appropriation of an intellectual framework is part of the essence of Orientalism. Undoubtedly the Koran has many humanistic and perhaps democratic principle, however as with most if not all religions they are based upon the principle of an autocratic, omnipotent 'god'. Pope or none, inherently undemocratic!

  • yes I agree with that....and no one is saying that islam is purely democratic. It is just more democratic! just likedancebaby said, the leaders of the early islamic communities were selected through a process of consultation, and leadership was not inherited. Also when u look at islamic polticial thinkers, both moderate and extreme u will find that the leader of the community is always elected through some process, and that the leader is responsible to the people!!

  • he is considered to be one of the people and has to follow the same laws as the people. and the people have the right to overtrhow the leadership if they have the feeling it is not following islamic principles. You dont see that with christian kings or even the popes in the past. now all of this is theory...but thats what i said from the beginning. in practice it all looks different.

  • Orientalism = White Supremacy

  • When Rome ultimately fell, it was not the same Rome as that of Cicero, Pompey, Crassus and Caesar. But when it ultimately did fall, a new barabaric order was established in Europe and created the era known as the "dark ages". Through centuries, they established their own culture and identity that was not directly linked to anything truly Ancient Roman or Greek.

  • I think it stated what my position was, that that culture you refer to is a seperate culture and history from what ultimately became modern Europe. Obviously they were influenced by the hellenistic and classic civillizations, but again the two are not directly linked. If you think about it Islamic culture also influenced modern europe to an extent, but you cannot claim the two are linked.

  • It was not just a continuum, you cannot connect the European democracies that sprang up in the past few centuries to Ancient Rome and Greece. The reason you cannot is because they were two different cultures and traditions. Those Romans practiced democracy while what is considered modern Europe were barbaric tribes who scorned such ideas. They eventually overran Roman society and it took them a thousand years to establish their own democracy, but it was a new process for them, not a continuation

  • the Europeans of the 15th century just imitated the Europeans of the ancient centuries...

  • Exactly that's my point, the combination of those groups can be considered Europe, Rome and Greece for all intents and purposes should not be considered in modern terms as "Europe". Those were ancient societies which promoted democracy (at least for men and wealthy landowners) and their form of democracy was ultimately derailed by those tribes and groups listed above. It took another thousand or more years after the fall of Rome to re-establish the notion of democracy once again.

  • Finally when they themselves became enlightened to the idea of democratic principles, they established solely for themselves. The birth of democratic prinicples really sprang up in the 17th and 16th centuries in Europe and its implementation started to take effect in the 18th century. In the 20th century when most third world countries tried to establish democracy, they were often thwarted by European and other western colonial powers.

  • Well first you have to establish your definition of "Europe". The first real contribution to democracy came from the Greeks and then the Romans...it was actually the celts, gauls, teutons, vandals, etc who overran the then Roman Empire and created a feudal system that lasted for over a thousand years. In many ways they rolled back the progress of democracy substantially..

  • Are you speaking of the Hitler Democracy? or that Mussolinni Democracy?

Or maybe of that Napolean dictator Democracy? Or maybe of that Greek slave-owning, males-only Democracy?

Yes, so much democracy that is resembles tyranny.

  • two films on edward said coming out on DVD in early september (together), check Amazon, Netflix, or Icarus films

  • Check your facts: The oldest scriptures that were found so far, were found in europe.

  • Orientalism = White Supremacy based upon the false notion that Europeans invented their own civilization and that they owe nothing but scorn to The East (where almost all of Europe's Pre-Modern technology and ideas originated).

  • You think I've got that notion.

  • Like slant eyes could ever invent anything worthwhile

  • Right: PRE-MODERN technologys and ideas. The muslim world never made it into modernity, that's the point (unlike other oriental cultures, for example Japan, Korea ...). Edward Saids thesis lacks empirical proof.

  • What pre-conceived notion do you think I've got, besides how can he claim to be an Arab. His father had just moved to the region.

  • The vast majority of "Western Civilization" is derived from The East:

    metallurgy agriculture Christianity writing

alphabet the wheel windmills Arabic Numerals positional notation chariots geometry guns (China) gunpowder magnetic compass printing press paper

rockets "Pythagorean" Theorem gears and crankshaft (China) sternpost rudder

365-day solar calendar base 10 numbering system zero 60 degrees 24 hours waterwheels blast furnace silk

    body armor stirrups saddles

  • Some of those inventions may have had their origins in the East, but European inventors deserve credit for their continued work which brought these inventions to their full capacity.

  • Actually, all of those inventions (and many more) had their origins in "The East". Yes, Europeans have been good at imitating and modifying other people's inventions.

But without colonialism and slavery, Europeans would still be stick in Europe imitating Asian inventions. The last 500 years of colonialism have been Affirmative Action for White People. When Europeans were still confined to Europe in 1492, they displayed no inventive capacity but primarily an imitation capacity.

  • Actually, Europeans were inventing things of their own even by that time like firearms and ships that could sail against the wind, there has been colonialism and slavery in every culture, but Europeans still were the ones who invented, what they invented.

  • I'm glad I live in a world so directly influenced by "The East" (how good of descriptor! the "east" side of a continuous sphere with no real cardinal orientation in the universe -- awesome). Every time I look at my magnetic compass or embrace the comma, I feel really passionate about making sure everyone knows what dead culture happened to discover whichever inevitable human invention, becuse that's important and relevant!!

    Oh fuck... it isn't? Damn.

  • Its strange that despite how obvious this eastern world misrepresentation is, that when something small is positively done about it, sometimes those who wanted that better representation get angry because they don't have something to be angry about an
