Yeah Cameron, hammer all the dumba** empty-headed FU*KS w/ your idiotic biases & political views, & wrap everything in a blue tint instead of a good script & somehow sell all 2 hrs & 42 min of it to stupid idiots who wouldn't recognize good writing & character development if that instead was the club & the back of their stupid heads just got whacked w/ it.
@bohnstube Wow. Quite butthurt for a 2 year old movie aren't ya. Maybe you're reading a little too much into things and instead should wander outside for half an hour.
@WiiDSguy *Yawn*. Nope, just restating the obvious intention of this "movie"(if that description's really going to be used to describe this ungodly bastardization of the term) to be nothing more than a REALLY "butthurt" idiotic propagandist's puke-fest from its very first line of "dialogue". Being conveniently & completely unaware of the context of this tripe because you never happened to catch even the very first line of this crapfest is no one's fault but your own.
@bohnstube Oh I'm well aware of all the underlying themes in the movie, but a couple of things: 1. It's a movie, for all the Homer Simpson's out there to look at and say 'ooh shiny' and pay big bucks to be entertained for a couple hours, it really isn't trying to be 'propaganda'. 2. Again, it's a MOVIE, don't take things so seriously, there's more to life. 3. It's quite obvious through your extreme ranting that you just don't like JamesCameron, and like it or not, he's a talented guy
@WiiDSguy "Talent" is needed to wave cash in the faces of decent SFX people who know going in that the cash is the only bucks they'll see from this tripe regardless of the boxoffice? And REALLY now, how "great" did the sfx have to be? Just great enough to BS "gamers", "anime", & "Pokémon" fanatics into believing this crap was ANYTHING other than what is was: a mockumentary cartoon hit piece w/ a political agenda. The bar was never very high in the 1st place. Talk about needing to "get out more".
The storyline and plot run so thin and lack any real substance... I didnt watch in the cinema, only on the DVD so I was never going to get swept up in the stunning 3D SFX!
It was Dances With Wolves in space!
Like MyPlaystationboy says below... "If you cant make it good, then make it 3D"
Avatar; yes fabulous scenery and colours but the story is SO hackneyed. Noble savage versus technically advanced but spiritually inferior invader. Hero meets girl, goes native and saves the day. The subtext is the usual swipe at the US and all its astounding achievements repackaged as barbaric exploiters in contrast to its holy and pure victims. If the antagonists were more pointedly Spanish or Portuguese then of course this would have caused serious offence. Vatican 1 US 0
We share the same opinion, but mines a bit more extreme. I think that really besides the CGI, Sound and picture, this movie was pretty crap. The acting was alright, but to be honest all big movies (with the exception of Tom Cruise movies) have good acting.
dont forget to give credit to weta workshop who alongside with james cameron spent 6 years making a master piece not surprised at all it was made in new zealand BURN AUSTRALIA FEEL THE BURN
Blunty is correct about the storyline and the "wrapping paper" it came in, but you also have to think that we have like around 10 years of movies, it will be hard to actually think of an original movie plot. Metaphor: If all the beans have been given already, give it again in a better wrapping paper.
@brnlnslcdbltrn 10 years of movies is not a good excuse for presenting such a weak and cliched story-telling. granted, being original is quite hard for movie-makers these days, but they could have done better than this. like everybody else, i was astonished by the visual experience and the great acting. but, in the end, the story is just like any other movie made for tv. "i've seen this in steven seagal's movie," is one of the things that came to my mind while watching avatar...
Please note that this review is obviously from a critic that has, mainly because of the nature of his chosen profession, seen way to many movies. Nothing is original to him anymore except for what is new to all of us; emerging technologies and its use in modern storytelling.
@HyruleWeirdo you do have a point. as much as blunty is entitled to his opinion.. i think it's not fair rip off Avatar as a mere can of bean in beautiful wrapper. audiences opened the beautiful wrapper, and enjoyed the beans.. had a grand experience in that moment.. but next day it wasn't a memorable can of beans.
Since Titanic, Matrix, LOTR.. Hollywood has flooded with CGI movies. Most have been superficial and disappointing. I really liked District 9. Avatar was really grand n worth watching
its as if you think there were no movies in the 90s with a boy meets girl plot. you do realise the same thing applys with every single movie, they are written way before they are released. JC probably got the idea from movies with the same concept. the stories blunty were refering to are a lot oooold then the 90s and have been redone throughout the 20th centery.
maybe 80s the revampt plot may have seemed refreshing. the thing is there are plenty of movies that have done it better
@HyruleWeirdo thats the problem, avatar didnt come out back then, it came out now. while previous movies with a better constructed BMG plot came out decades ago and were probably written ages before release.
what JC should have done is moderise his plot but instead he just focused on the graphics which ill give the movie credit for and the actors. thats all that was good.
but if you were to strip down those graphics youve got one hollow movie even if it were in the 90s
@blunty3000 HAHAHAHAHA ^ full on told those duck fucks above saying your review is shit.
I saw avatar in a brilliant cinema in 3D, and it was the best looking movie ive ever seen, but when you get the storyline summary of pokahontis, all you need to do is change a few words and you've got the storyline of avatar.
and as for your watchmen review, watchmen was probably the best movie ive seen in a long time, it was visually captivating, and i felt connected to the story some how.
Folks, there is more to Avatar than meets the eye. Its to James Cameron's credit to make you all googily-eyed over the visuals that you can't actually see how genius the film.
I thought that how the story was a copy of pochahontas actually made the movie really good, and it also suggested how we r destroying our envireonment, so I see the movie as a powerful message drizzled with beautiful visual effects, amazing audio, and great cast! It was my favorite movie ive ever seen, or at least in my top 5.
It's supposed to be an event film. true, it's a rehashed story, but it knows exactly what it is. it's a story we've seen before brought to us in a new way.
it just looks like every cgi movie of the last 5 years to me, not visually groundbreaking in any way [utter shite story as well]. if you want to see a true technical masterpiece that really pushes what can be accomplished visually watch gasper noe's ENTER THE VOID instead
I love this so much because its a peice of art, i love the visuals and everything in the movie, fair enough the story was typical but it has never been done better before. i aspire to be a character artist so this is probbly while i love it so much.
Nice Review. But ..Umm JC said before the movie came out in an interview that is was "Dances with Wolves in Space" and that he was trying to push forward some technology with this script that was 20 years old. So I do disagree with "he thinks you are a moron' I liked the movie only for what it was but had to excuse the 3 times used plot (Wolves was a remake last time). and agree with most of what you said. Love the energy you bring to your videos.
I agree with just about every point you made here. The only difference between you and me is, I would NOT recommend the movie. I mean, it IS worth seeing how aesthetically beautiful the movie is, but that wears off after about 15 - 30 minutes, and it's not worth the two hours you'll still have after that @_@
how many movies have un-original storyline a fuck load but they are still good because they do justice to that storyline. Avatar has the storyline of Pocahontas and i think it was the best version of that story.
Also this movie is basically how we treated native Americans when we went to America.
But i do agree how you think people are taking it to far and it is just a movie.
how many of the story lines in n=movies are original, a fuck load of movies have un original storyline but are still good because they did justice to the storyline, that is what avatar did. o it is the Pocahontas storyline.
The performances were serviceable. Nothing too great. They work in their stereotypes OK. The cliches and predictable plot wasn't the main problem. It's a problem that was maginified by the HORRIBLE dialogue. Star Trek was rather predictable, but it had excellent dialogue and it was well acted.
Avatar is a sublime visual experience. Style with almost ZERO substance. I don't mind films like that, but Cameron constantly promoted it to be the most pivotal/important film of all time....it wasn't.
Honestly i thought the point behind the mining was to provide a metaphore for what happens in Africa, where the mining corporations do what ever to the area with little regard to the local population, destroy homes and livleyhoods, even enslave a couple.
I really got disappointed in the story and swept away by the rest of the movie. You're right, both performances and the movie itself are just beautiful. I can't believe he's making this a trilogy, he barely managed a story in this one, what will the next two be like? x.X
I saw dances with wolves the day before avatar. It was really good, gripping storyline, love, loss, americans, indians, bad guys capture main character, main character escapes to the mountains. good guys are wiped out. Brilliant
When I saw avatar, I was like WTF! It was the same can of beans but in a different wrapping. Not similar. Exactly the same. Whats worse, James fucking Cameron gives a horrible clichéd ending where the natives somehow win and bulletproof glass can't stop a fucking stick.
I am currently studying this movie for English and i am going to agree with the review... the first time watching it i thought it was good because of the effects but apart from that its dull. the story is bad, the aliens are romanticized WAY too much and the end... well lets just say i think that tech trumps bows&arrows so the end was complete crap as far as i am concerned.
interesting to look at the aliens culture and different indigenous cultures around the world. thought i would mention it.
How do you do the backround blunty? and i actually felt very similar during the movie. seems like a giant retelling of pochohantas (spelled that wrong) and re creating of the treatment of the first nations in north america when the Europeans came to the "new land"
as to un-obtanium, i thought that was ironic and kinda funny :P
I agree with most of this review, but the element was not actually called unobtainium. It had some long scientific name so they just referred to it as unobtainium. I was much more concerned about the cliched plot, "plains people" Na'vi, and the lack of moral ambiguity.
@dmartin2012 This was an utterly different experience to watchmen... and if you can't figure out why, you're probably too stupid to comprehend what Watchmen was really about.
I have no idea what the fuck "pear entertainment" is.
@Blunty3000 Bland, non-thought provoking. Which is crap. Film and literature are two different languages, but both can tell a tale with the same detail and expression.
Agreed. Looks beautiful, and totally HORRID lack of originality and intelligence. Pathetically cliched and uber-predictable. Did have a great presentation. And kudos on calling out the f***ing-retarded "Unobtainium" naming. Ugh... *sigh* I hated that so much, the story/writing was sooo weak.
i think james made it the way it was because that was his main idea. It was mainly just to show a adventure through this beautiful world trapped in his mind.
This movie was nothing speacial. Great visuals..thats about it. Acting was stale and the story had been done before. Normaly not a HUGE problem but when it is a movie being raved about..you have to ask why? It did not deserve any oscar nominations or its golden globe. I think fantastic mr. fox should have had best animation because it was stop frame..which is very hard and time consuming. CGI is much easier to work with.
The main problem that I had with the movie, was that it was basically a love story, very similar the Pocohontas, only it seemed to put in some plot holes into a story, which would be easy to avoid plot holes. One that I would like to point out, is how after betraying the Navi, the main character (I can't remember his name), goes back to the Navi, without being met with any anger from the Navi or remorse for his betrayal against them.
I agree. It should be used as an example for what a movie should be visually. The story is pretty much the same story you can read in a history text book about Native Americans & European Americans! There are flaws in the story writing as in the Na'vi (English speaking ones) speak pretty good English at the start and then speak POOR English. The alien animals look a lot like animals in Discovery Channel doc.'s about alien life. It looks like some of the vehicles are from Halo. No creativity!
I disagree, i think that the story needs to be simple for a film like that - by having a simple story you can focus on the amazing ideas he brought into the film, my favourite being the way they can connect and control the animals.
I do like intellectual films, however i just cant help feeling a complex plot here wouldn't have benefited the film, although i can see your point of view.
@NoodleDoorant "i don't like the intelectual films" ....so...is good only for the shiny things and the cgi,....maybe this is a movie make for dumb people
tell me the amazin idead just 1..... the ideas are in the plot, without a plot u just hace....shiny effects
@wololos first of all, i said i do like intelectual films, as you can CLEARLY SEE IN MY COMMENT - get it right before you start going off on one. Second, your english is appalling - dont start telling me im an idiot for enjoying films with good CGI when you cant even spell half of your comment right. I think people with your IQ should be banned from using the internet all together.
So what if people are "swept up" in how AMAZING the performances are, and how BEAUTIFUL the visual effects are!!! It's a hugely entertaining film, and that's why we go to the movies. You are a wanna-be intellectual too full of yourself.
but this was never really gonna be a thinky movie.
What it was always going to be it does very well, anyone thinking this was gonna be a great story hasn't being paying attention to cinema for the last twenty years.
Hey Blunty, I finally SAW Avatar. You're right: it was visually beautiful, and I'm sure the theater experience was amazing and overwhelming, but I'm a little cheap and borrowed the DVD from my parents. You were right: the story was weak, and the mineral being called unobtainium was just ridiculous. Thanks for the great review. :)
In regards to the plot, I reckon the studio wanted the movie's primary target audience to be somewhere around 8-17 yr olds. That explains the typical storyline which essentially appeals to the masses.
Coudnt agree more. Great CGI, good actors, great sound, but James where did the soul from T2, Aliens and The abyss go? I wasnt suprised once in this movie. T2 I have seen about 50 times i dont think I will be seing this for more then 3-4 at most.
i wasted my money to go see this in 3D it sucked donkey balls. I would rather watch that Gay ass twilight movie 12 times over then watch avatar one more damn time
I've noticed that this movie has two sides of critics. The first didn't like the plot but loved the CGI. The second loved the movie in every way. Now I understand the movie had plot elements from other movies and that some of the foreshadowing was unneeded. But the fact is most of world is full of morons and if most of the world didn't like the movie then it wouldn't of made money. Looking at it from a financial standpoint it makes since. I really liked the love story in this movie though.
@TwooGiz You mean to say, it makes CENTS, pun intended...or is that SIC?
I liked it despite the plot being familiar, it simply is a tale of our need to consume warranting lasting destructive nature, and Cameron is a fan of the outdoors, nature, not our man made city-scapes.
This movie was annoyingly over rated. I agree with you blunty, People are too obsessed with the way this film looks and how it was presented, so it just becomes style over substance. They had such a good opportunity to turn this into an instant classic but failed in my eyes. Very annoying indeed. Good review Blunty.
hey i agree with what you are saying about the cgi but that is only from trailers myself but the unispired part i dont agree with sounds like to me and what i kno of the movie as it was inspired by the wars that have been going on in the world over oil lets invate this place for there resorce but thats just me
@confessionsofapwner Your preceding comments before stating you agree with me indicate that you don't, in fact, hold the same opinion I have. dingus. Like so many others here you've only heard what you wanted to hear, the parts you either agree with or don't, but not both.
@Blunty3000 this movie have the same plot as ferngully lol, i dont know how this can be a "good" movie only 4 the cgi....the expectations 4 the movies are looow
I hated this movie. The "beautiful" CGI didn't look real enough for me and it was incredibly cliche and it also reminded me of bones the tv show (they spell EVERYTHING they do out to the people of the audience). I wasn't intrigued in this movie at all and now I agree with blunty that people thought this movie was awesome because of the CGI. That didn't cut it for me >.> the story was BAD BAD BAD.
dude, not to be a game nerd but they even ripped off halo. If youve played Halo Wars youll notice that those helicopter things they use look EXACTLY like the HAWKS. Those robot suit things are EXACTLY like Cyclopses. Yeah, this movie ripped everything off. Bluny is right
I'm sure many beautiful women hope you don't notice they're a little too slow for your tastes Blunty, many crushed dreams, too many to count on one finger.
An ambitious film that is so breathtaking, it detracts you from the fact that Cameron's characters are caricatures...I watched it free in HD quality at
Basically it's a piece of shit wrapped in shining paper. Remember Ferngully, Pocahontas, and Dancing With Wolves mixed in a shit soup with some good bits.
The movie was nothing more than a phony, transparent, most tired hackneyed screed against Bush administration policies. Ho-hum, & BFD. Yeah Cameron, hammer all the dumba** empty-headed FU*KS w/ your idiotic biases & political views, & wrap everything in a blue tint instead of a good script & somehow sell all 2 hrs & 42 min of it to stupid idiots who wouldn't recognize good writing & character development if that instead was the club & the back of their stupid heads just got whacked w/ it.

how many movies have un-original storyline a fuck load but they are still good because they do justice to that storyline. Avatar has the storyline of Pocahontas and i think it was the best version of that story.
Also this movie is basically how we treated native Americans when we went to America.
But i do agree how you think people are taking it to far and it is just a movie.
it is still a pretty damn good movie.

I agree with everything you had to say, but to be honest, the acting was quite mediocre. Good review, man.
Theathiestcatguy 1 year ago

I agree with most of this review, but the element was not actually called unobtainium. It had some long scientific name so they just referred to it as unobtainium. I was much more concerned about the cliched plot, "plains people" Na'vi, and the lack of moral ambiguity.

333icequake333 1 year ago
BowieStardust072 1 year ago
I disagree, i think that the story needs to be simple for a film like that - by having a simple story you can focus on the amazing ideas he brought into the film, my favourite being the way they can connect and control the animals.
I do like intellectual films, however i just cant help feeling a complex plot here wouldn't have benefited the film, although i can see your point of view.

@NoodleDoorant "i don't like the intelectual films" ....so...is good only for the shiny things and the cgi,....maybe this is a movie make for dumb people

Hey Blunty, I finally SAW Avatar. You're right: it was visually beautiful, and I'm sure the theater experience was amazing and overwhelming, but I'm a little cheap and borrowed the DVD from my parents. In regards to the plot, I reckon the studio wanted the movie's primary target audience to be somewhere around 8-17 yr olds. That explains the typical storyline which essentially appeals to the masses.

TwooGiz 1 year ago
@TwooGiz You mean to say, it makes CENTS, pun intended...or is that SIC?
I liked it despite the plot being familiar, it simply is a tale of our need to consume warranting lasting destructive nature, and Cameron is a fan of the outdoors, nature, not our man made city-scapes.
MetallicBill 1 year ago
This movie was annoyingly over rated. I agree with you blunty, People are too obsessed with the way this film looks and how it was presented, so it just becomes style over substance.
