  • I think Henry VIII was about 6 feet and when young was very robust. He excelled at pretty much all of the physical sports and had a great singing voice also. When young he was considered to have been handsome, and as we all know he was a very randy fellow. He was what is consider now as having been a real he-man, but also one who loved the arts. He degenerated into an ogre who was quick to anger, held a grudges, was capricious, and down right mean at times. What a complex and fascinating man.

  • @sauroid1 He could write poetry, too. He was also very well educated. He could communicate with Erasmus and knew several languages, including French and Spanish. Yes, a fascinating character.

  • Partitures??

  • Was Henry VIII a large man, or merely a regular sized man with large clothes?

  • @TheJaredtheJaredlong He grew to be a very large man. After a sporting accident he could not get much exercise and he became very fat. They say his waist measurement was 50 inches. Recent research suggests he died due to complications of untreated Type 2 Diabetes.

  • @buddmar I saw what was listed as the armor of Henry VIII in the Metropolitan Museum in NYC. The unavoidable thought was "Honey, does this armor make my butt look fat?"

  • @redsilkcut1 ye

  • chaosfive55 you are so perceptive. Mindboggling isn't it?! Who can understand such a difference in personality involving one man?

  • While they play very well, I somehow suspect the first piece would sound much better if played at double the tempo (and that this was the composer's intention).

The second piece (a gaillarde, I presume) was perfect, though.

  • He must have been at peace with GOD and his CHURCH when he composed

    this music

  • @redsilkcut1

"I don nat want to chenge me religioun, sire!"

  • Lovely performance. Does "If Love Now Reynyd" have lyrics?

  • @dbadagna If love now reynyd as it hath bene And war rewardit as it hath sene, Nobyll men then wold suer enserch All ways wherby thay myght it rech; But envy reynyth with such dysdayne, And causith lovers outwardly to refrayne, Which puttes them to more and more Inwardly most grevous and sore: The fault in whom I cannot sett; But let them tell which love doth gett.
  • @TheDivineShield

Is this missing the last three lines?

"To lovers I put now sure this case:

Which of their loves does get them grace?

And unto them which doth it know"

  • What people don't realise is that Henry VIII was the rock star of his time!

  • @Raffzeee At last someone who does not see Henry as a monster. Henry VIII was a man of his time and we cannot impose our own morals and modern standards on him. His people expected their King to be part Lion part Lamb.

  • exactly

  • @Raffzeee He also broke the power Rome had over England, made Britain a prosperous wealthy nation, founded the Royal Navy, reduced the power of the nobility, transformed parliament and permitted the translation of the bible into English. He was the most mourned monarch of all time when he died.

  • @Scooby71Doo Well I'm not saying all rock stars are good, I personally think he was a bastard. However he was a trendy bastard for his time and it annoys me when stupid teenagers in history classes call him a fat ginger etc. It is interesting what you say about him though, I was always taught he was a machiavelian cunt.

  • @Scooby71Doo You should learn your history. He was a tyrant, a rake and an irresponsible brat who executed Catholics for treason while at the same burning protestants for heresy. The foundation of the Royal Navy has been ascribed to many kings, including Alfred and John. When he died, I should think most people would have been glad to see the back of him. He is a warning to those who think education is an antidote to tyrrany. Henry was one of the most educated men in Europe, as this music shows.

  • Im a 14 year old that loves this music/& i have to say that this is one of my fave's!

  • @OutOfThereDaisy you're not the only

  • @OutOfThereDaisy 11- beat that!

  • @OutOfThereDaisy OMG YOU`RE 14 HOLY FUCK I SHOULD GIVE YOU A FUCKING MEDAL FOR THAT!!!!!! :O

  • Certainly a complex man, who could compose such moving music and order executions with cold-blooded ease!

  • I love this music

  • This man had the potential to become of the greatest rulers in human history, but instead of that he left a tragic trail of suffering and destruction.

His daugther Elizabeth was in many ways the monarch he should have been.
