I met a friend in austria recently and he said he couldn't stop listening to this song one song from coltrane, it was one of my best friends who I havent seen in ages. I couldn't have agreed more, I felt the same..
@LifeLearner28 Well I'm not so crazy about this particular piece. IMO the bassline is lost when it could have maintained the beautiful melody from the original song and still have the jazz swing.
@SANNAFABICH i really love the bass line. It gives a shamanic feel of mysticism to the whole thing. Btw Eric Dolphy is great, not his best performance here i think but he has a distinctive style and contributed well.
The piano player is playing with lots of energy- this band is playing as if they are one body. Each person playing is telling story through their instrument.
If forced to choose the single greatest musical performance ever recorded, I dare say it would be this. Given a but single choice, this is what I would have put on the Voyager Golden Record (this, or Gould's performance of 'Der Kunste Der Fugue').
@madmarcus1970 It's usually best to ignore the dislike column. Actually, even reading the comments should be done at one's own risk, as there are TOO many fools in this world and reading an ignorant comment can f up your day for hours! Just my opinion....
this is not the video of the music you are hearing. what you hear was recorded at Newport Jazz Festival and has Roy Haynes on drums, not Elvin. His crisp drumming gave this a unique flavor different from Elvin. not better, but different. this was always one of my very favorites and i think beats the original quartet recording. plus we have dolphy on flute, and McCoy Tyner's solo is really hot.
This is class, an cool personified, you rap clowns just don't know, Coltrane could've taught you a thing or two about "real swagger", but his was done with dignity, honor, an respect, not arrogance, buffoonery, an flat out stupidity. This is from 1961, and Coltrane soon after passed, at the relatively young age of 40 in 1967, although this one will always be my favorite piece from him, God only knows what more great music we never got to hear him do, R.I.P. "Trane", your rest is well deserved...
@3811iberis Listen to Juggaknots - "Trouble man" before you decide to voice your opinion on what you think Hip Hop is. I think he'd appreciate the swagger these guys have . Investigate before you pass judgment on things you know nothing or little about. His influences still reach us to this very day and will continue into the future . Brilliance never dies, only gets developed and expanded.
Glad your the Coltrane historian too, appreciate that.
@SaintMarijuana - Dude, I said rap clowns, not hip hop, I know the difference, believe me. Jugganots is obviously not a part of the mainstream rap genre, I know plenty about hip hop, probably more than you, so pump your brakes before you try an advise me on what I should give my opinion on, you know nothing about me. Genuine hip hop an mainstream rap is like comparing light to dark, hip hop is not popular today with the masses, this rap bulls**t is, with these talentless rap artist of today...
I have left explicit instructions that if I am ever to be in a coma, this music MUST be played at my bedside 24hrs/day. if this does not bring me out then nothing will. When I die I want this to be played at my funeral.
Everytime when I listen to this particular song, I know everything is fine, that it MUST somehow be fine and the way it was meant to be, otherwise music such as this couldn't exist.
some of my favorite things are searing rolling Saxophone notes. Percussive yet melodic piano. The Melodic yet perfect rhythm of the drums. The beauty of a flute fantasy. And steady rolling and popping bass lines...

I was never a fan of the original verrsion. But his version is magic. When i first saw it i immediately bought this version plus a 20 minute version of this song when he was in Stockholm. Unfortunately I lost the CD during my stay in Spain.
What a great video! I am in tears to finally see my favorite songs played by my favourite muscicians finally in video... Not the best prestation/sound quality, and not a fan of Dolphy here but still fabulous music!!
I love Tyner's solo! (in the studio version it is like the best thing I have ever heard)
