  • What standup act was this part of?

  • I've never commented on a youtube video before. I'm excited.

Whether or not you think it's funny, no one's explained the joke correctly. The premise of the joke is that the notion of a pretentious illiterate is surprising/funny. The joke is that Mr. Galifianakis never writes a joke around that premise -- he simply announces the premise, presents it literally, and then acts like that constitutes a punchline.

We expected a joke about a pretentious illiterate, and the lack of one is the joke.

  • This wasn't very funny...and yes I understood the joke.

  • @regginyaga I think the third element you are talking about is that we all hate pretentious people, so the "hidden message" is that this what they are *all* saying (they are too busy being pretentious to say anything important or actually clever). (or something like that.)

  • I guess If I'm trying to hate it I'll hate it and if I'm trying to like it I'll like it and the real quality is somewhere in the middle

  • While yes, this was very funny, the audience is waaaayyyy too receptive to humor that's not worth the reaction.

  • are you supposed to pretend you get it and thats the joke?

  • @Regginyaga you really don't get it?

  • @bboooobbyy Is it really that simple? That wasn't in any way funny

  • @Regginyaga .the 'joke' is that a pretentious person might say something like that with the same tone and inflection as he had; the disconnect occurs because illiteracy is not something you would ever be pretentious about. The joke is funny if you "get it" right away. If you don't get it, and someone has to explain it to you, its not gonna be funny obviously.

  • @bboooobbyy I got it that right away I just thought there might be something more to it because it wasnt funny at all

it takes more than just two things contrasting to be funny I can think of something unexpected right now

a man walks up to you wearing a red shirt and says "I am wearing a green shirt"

HE WAS WEARING A RED SHIRT AND HE SAID HE WAS WEARING A GREEN SHIRT HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA YOU DON'T GET IT BECAUSE YOU'RE STUPID HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • @Regginyaga Okay, whatever man. You better just stick with Dane Cook and Larry the cable guy. I think they're more your speed.

  • @Regginyaga the word pretentious doesn't have anything to do with pretending... look up the definition of pretentious and then maybe you'll understand

  • not funny

  • @zKnockK get out. Your not funny or cool for saying that

  • i dont get it

  • @8riguy You're exactly right. David Cross's character on Mr Show where he was too good for everything too.

  • I worked in a place with people who are actually like that.

  • twooo pussies....

  • @jakep42zer0 I wonder how he would have gone, 18 pussies.
