the instance quoted where the fields were burned and the muslims were told that they live on Ghanima (booty) was under difficult conditions, where the Umma was under direct attack and every man was needed to fight (the Bysentine empire). it does not mean that a muslim must only live on war-booty. clearly the christians mentioned already had fields to work on, while the muslims were soldiers who settled near by, which is consistent with muslim settlements/garrisons during campaigns.
