African American is an ethnic term for those who have dscendance from former slaves and freedmen who were brought over since 500 years ago to North America. It usually appiles to those in the US or Canada. You dont have to be born in Africa. Its where you rtace your roots. Italian Americans were never born in Italy but they still say Italian Americans. Its a cultural designation not where you were born. Thats why the term Americna is used in both

@godawgs06 IT IS ALL A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVE.. IN THE US THEY TEACH THAT THERE IS "TWO CONTINENTS". HOWEVER, IN LATIN AMERICA THEY SAY THAT AMERICA IS A SINGLE CONTINENT,,,,,, I DO NOT KNOW WHY THE USA WANTS TO BREAK AWAY FROM THE REST OF THE CONTINENT.. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, PEOPLE WANT TO MONOPOLIZE THE TERM AMERICAN.. I DON'T SEE THE BRITISH, FRENCH, ITALIANS ETC ETC MONOPOLIZING THE TERM EUROPEAN
I am aware of the difference in opinion among countries in N and S America (Canada also separates the two continents). I find it hard to not discern the difference in the two continents, while paying no mind to Europe and Asia lacking a physical boundary. There is an obvious distinction between N and S America, to ignore it seems strange.
As far as monopolizing the word America, it is a part of the countries name, and is how the vast majority of the world refers to its citizens.
Now this is funny. Named after a Welshman! America was not founded nor invented by the British. The Spanish and the French were here for over 100 years before the British and Germans ever showed up.
@druss3636 Didn't say it was discovered by a Brit, said it was named after him, Richard Amerike financed the voyage of Giovanni Caboto/John Cabot to North America, and in return he asked the new land to be named after him.
@druss3636 Didn't say it was discovered by a Brit, said it was named after him, Richard Amerike financed the voyage of Giovanni Caboto/John Cabot to North America, and in return he asked the new land to be named after him. Of course this is just as much a theroy as Amerigo Vespucci, I just thought it would be more funny to present it as fact due to your agressive comment.
I also typed that it was the Spanish and the French who settled America first, not the British. If the British discovered America, how did the Spanish and French beat you guys here? Just for a laugh:).......
Giovanni Caboto was one of the first people to land in North America (Newfoundland to be exact) before Vespucci and after Columbus, Caboto was Italian, he named the land after Richard Amerike his financier. I didn't say the British were there first, just that it's highly possible that it is named after one. (It's also odd to name a place after anyone's first name unless they're royal which is why Vespucci is often doubted).
Actually, America is two continents. So, when the people in the Middle East say, "Down with America", they are referring to the continents. What do they have against Mexico or El Salvador?
Hes only part african american. Im not trying to down play the fact that its basically a miricle, but until a man the colour of a dark nigerian in is office, a black man has not been president
Obama is not African-American. Obama is a black man but not African-American. He was born in the Us not Africa. anyone who says their African-American witch is half of the black community is wrong. Your black american not African-American. You were never born in Africa, and become a us citizen so ur not african american and neither is obama.
Make your damn mind up. You just said he was black american. The whole point of this was that he is NOT (just) black. There is no doubt he is ameircan.
It's our Remembrance Day Poppy. We wear them in November around the time of the original date of the Armistice- which we call 'Remembrance Day'. It's to remember all the fallen soldiers who died in the wars since World War One. It's quite important in the UK, we take it quite seriously. As the poster said, the money from their sales goes to a large charity that supports our soldiers.
@hop208 it's to remember all those fallen in war or conflict. Its conducted properly on the 11th november every year and leading up to that day most people wear poppies.
Sir Trevor Macdonald captured the moment best among all those comments. Maybe because he's black, but he seemed to combine the right measures of objectivity with the important magnitude of what had happened.
I have always been wondering if the British understand American English.
