using to f8 command on my mac keyboard doesn't seem to be working. not even after combining it with fn. what is another way i can get to the component mode?
Hi, at around 2:09 of this video after I hit select- Vertex, the grid surroundng my box turns orange/yellow. When I use the tool to manipulate the box the whole box moves around off axis. Some curvature occurs but with the box moving everywhere its hard to control the object. Please can somebody help?
Unfortunately, I could only help you with 3DS Max, I'm just starting with Maya... But the orange-yellow colour and the whole object moving, that is soft selection.
I'm not gonna lie...you sound like a generic version of Jeff Goldblum. That being said, I am thoroughly enjoying your tutorials, and I hope they help me learn Maya enough so that when I begin an animation school (if they ever accept me), I won't be out of the loop.
OMG, You helped me so much that i don't eve know how to thank yoU! This will help me to my career! Yes, i have to practice 3D animation for my college years... gah even though im still 15 y/o, im practicing now. But this SUPER DUPER HELPFUL TUTORIAL HELP ME THANK YOU SOO MUCH!
LOVE THESE TUTORIALS!! I did run into a problem with this one, at the end, i was unable to type the numbers into the plane attributes... can't imagine why not heh. oh well...
it wont allow me to manipulate just one square at a time. if i try to move a square it selects all the squares in the surrounding area. how do i just manipulate one square
I like the videos so far. I teach computer graphics to high school students (mostly Adobe and Macromedia programs.) We just got Maya and I never used it before. The one thing I dislike about our videos is the stress you put on keyboards commands. I think it is necessary to memorize keyboard commands before you even know the program's main features. The videos are really useful though.
I am currently trying to learn 3d animation, I have been practicing with Blender, so it has given me some basic background.
Now that I have maya, whilst the basics remain the same the screen and tool configuration is quite differnt, nonetheless your tutorials are a great help and you can be sure I will follow each and everyone of them to the letter.
thanks for these ! been going through the manual tutorials and a beginner book and no early mention of booleans... I find that absurd as most objects can be modelled using prims that are merged together
There are a million different directions that you can follow with this software once you have learned the basics. The next set of videos are in the planning stages now, and will focus on design.
You must select a 'face' using one of the tools on the left hand side of your screen. Try selecting individual faces with the 'move' tool and the boxes should appear.
All I can recommend is that you try it again in a very simple way until you get the hang of it. Start with a new scene and use 2 very basic overlapping shapes...Good luck.
Thanks for the tutorials, Just one simple question though. How do I get the grey shading to show up in my polygons? I only can see the green/blue lines and it makes it harder to model things with just using lines as a reference.
Do you by any chance know how to get the Select menu on a Mac? I can't use f8 to switch between component/object either, I have to go to the menu My Mouse has a little ball in the middle and no left/right buttons.
This is great - I love the human touch - never heard anyone get so exited about the word "booleans" in a tutorial before ...and why not? - just fantastic!

Sounds like it was "soft selection".
You must have hit a wrong key or button...

keyboard commands are the way to go...
and coming from experience teaching kids they will prob pick it up faster than adults...
also alot of these commands cross programs. so the sooner you get used to them the better it will be.
