This is probably my favorite Billy Joel ballad. I wish more artists would give a melodic song a simple arrangement of only one guitar or a piano. The lack of production spotlights the vocals and melody of this song. Too many songs today suffer from too much production instead of keeping it simple like Billy does here.

Billy Joel is not Atheist, and he is not Jewish. He is Catholic. And this song was written not for the Virgin Mary ( although being Catholic, it could have been some what "inspiring"), but was written for a woman who did him so wrong that he refused to sing it in concert ever again. And as far as I've known, he never has.
