Wonderful Song ! A Classic ! This is by far the best version ! They were a great group ! I think the reason they sing it so well is because of their own personal experiences ! Thanks so much for uploading ! 5*****+
my mom had a journey there. but she came home for me, so I could have a mom.
she came home too soon, and her life was hard.
her hair would burst into flames that only she could see, but burned her all the same. and she'd scream in pain. and it hurt me too. I didnt know what to do about it. but then she'd hug me, hard. she came home , to be my mom.
I was committed but it wasn't to Parkview so this song hits home for me too. Especially the attempted suicide parts.. The thing i didn't understand about these places is if you come in in a irrational state so far away from your normal "you" as you can get... how do they know if you're cured. I simply had to act my way out of the madhouse several times in order for them NOT to kill me with other drugs. Thank God they never gave me the electro shock therapy.
My friend's mother jokes about Me and Johnny cash. I always wear black and it tickles her. Few my age understand the song, the man in black. I wear black and my boots, for those forgoten by the world.
With all apologies to all the fans of the other versions, I think this is the best version of them all. Cash's version is too fast and too straight. Wagoner's version is too melodramatic, although I like his introduction.
Cash's take on the line, "I always say, 'Fantastic' . . .", which is the hook, is better done than almost anything I have heard him do.
This version makes it hard to believe that Cash wrote it.
@JimCubb Yes, Cash did write it. Marty Stuart: “Cash gave me a cassette of the song in 1981 and asked me to get it to Porter,” Stuart continues. “I never got around to it until we started collecting songs for this project. I searched my warehouse and found the envelope with ‘Committed to Parkview’ on it, with a note from John to Porter. Twenty-five years after I was supposed to and three years after his death, I did what I told John I would do. I delivered the song, and Porter loved it.”
@JimCubb Johnny Cash wrote this song back in the day for his friend, Porter Waggoner. Porter actually was committed to Parkview (in Nashville) back in the 60's. He always wanted to record it, but it was too personal. He finally did it and he makes it work.

If "Psychiatry is a load of crap," then how do you treat a person with mental illness?
shelton705 2 years ago 2
@shelton705 you don't. You learn coping techniques. Hard, but true.

Never heard this song done by the Highwaymen and it is sure great! Porter Wagoner also does a good job of this song as well!
