Surely it doesn't count if you use it as a simple communications tool. It's easier to use than most other chat protocols and messaging services; I even use it for business communications. I do, however, see your point about the way most people use it. :/

Myspace was actually better just like AOL/AIM was good, yet they all faded but watch FB & Tw remain ironically? government-data bank collecting sights.. Video games are different, they are not a replaceable service like Facebook. They are a form of entertainment media, quickly making the transition to recognized artform. I'm sure when film was invented there were plenty who believed it was a fad that would die out.

As for Facebook, you're probably right - even if not the brand of Facebook itself, some kind of online social media hub and its continued use will be a factor in the lives of future generations.

My facebook is a bunch of stuff about my kid put up for friends and family hundreds of miles away.

The only truly legitimate reasons I can see for using Facebook might be as a professional page for small businesses etc, or in some circumstances to organize an event or get a political or social message out there.

@Cajaquarius I feel differently. More people are 'awake' today than at any other time. The internet is the source that provides information from all over the world in an instant. Never in the history have we had this technology. It IS working. However, merely watching videos and reading for yourself to gain knowledge is the first step. The next is to pass the information along. It's just important to be well-researched. Don't blindly pass info or you could be doing more harm than good. :)
