He would have probably won the best supporting oscar for Ben Hur but he was listed as one of the main stars instead of supporting stars and at the time you could not win a best supporting role if you were considered a main star. How unlike later when Robin Williams won his best supporting actor award when he was the top billed actor.

Boyd was very fortunate Kirk Douglas turned down the role of Messala before they offered it to him, as Douglas didn't want to play 2nd to Heston and wanted the title role himself but Heston got the part and furious Douglas made his own film Spartacus and had he not hired a commie to do the screenplay and got black -balled Douglas could have won the Oscar instead of Heston and had he taken the role of Messala he would have won Best Supporting actor . Boyd got lucky .

Well that's your opinion. However, cinema history has thousands of stories of actors not getting this role or that part, of actors not being the first choice of a particular role making it their own...

And Boyd did make it his own.. it's very difficult imagining someone else in the part he playe in Ben Hur..

Luck has played a powerful and massively influential role in cinema. Boyd got lucky? Well, so did everyone else my friend.

I'm not putting Boyd down , what i am saying is that had Douglas( who was the 1st pick of William Wyler) taken the part Boyd probably would not have made Star status and been stuck in B films. So Yes Boyd was lucky and made the best of his good luck by making the role his own and did a fabulous job that only Douglas and or Anthony Quinn could have matched at that time.

He died at 45...that was a horrible tragedy and a major loss to the film industry.
