Murnest you are right on all accounts but might I add that the MG34 was more expensive to produce ; too complicated (mostly machined parts instead of all stampings as in the MG42) and prone to jamming when used in muddy and dirty conditions.
Still it remained the weapon of choice for tankuse (Nahverteidigungswaffe). Indeed the lower rate of fire made the MG34 a more accurate weapon and less of an "ammo-eater".
The only difference is that it fires the NATO 7.62 X 51 (.308) round, and is machined to use the U.S. distintegrading link belt; externally, the gun has the exact same appearance as the real '42.
a box is not needed. only when mounted will that be usefull but there are other ways. in an assult the box will just unhandy and might get broken in the heat of battle.
normally belts from 50 ~ 100 rounds are caried.
And in a nest they just put as many together as posible if needed.
Mg-42 or the more modern version mg-62 is proberly the best lmg ever made.
seems like a ammo box could be mounted on slide rails under the gun, to sit like an M60, turning the 42 into one huge heavy ass SAW. if I had one, that's what I'd do. The bipod should provide some clearance under the gun to mount it this way, and if its not enough, you could increase the height of the bipod. This way you could grab the whole gun and run with it, ammo and all, drop to the ground, and shoot. Maybe do away with bipod, and balance / rotate the gun on the attached ammo box
Actually, the Americans did try to copy the MG42 after WWII, and they made the reveiver too short, so it didn't work. They then went on to make a half arse copy known as the M-60.
its hardly old and crappy, the gun still outperforms a wide array of modern equivalents, and is in use with very little modification as the standard gpmg of the german army (g3 is its new designation i beleive), and the roller bolt it uses is actually a revolutionary piece of design.
The MG42 was the last and best of the general purpose machineguns. Modern armies base their squads' firepower around a squad automatic weapon (SAW). SAWs are similar to GPMGs in that they have a high rate of fire and are fed by large ammo belts, but a SAW can be carried and fired by a single soldier, and even used like a rifle in a pinch.
MG3 is the new name for the 7.62mm model. I think it was originally called the MG42/58 for the year of original and secondary modification, 1942 and 1958. Later it was redisignated MG3. I really like the system. I saw some the Estonians were using in Iraq. They were given to them by the Swedes, along with some G-3s, which were in great shape as well. The G-3 is a rifle that uses a similar delayed recoil design.
Propaganda. In short bursts of 10 to 15 rounds the MG42 was highly accurate and in with a tripod that is really fixed to the ground it was a miracle weapon
Beautiful Machine Gun :)

Also 1500-1700 Schuss/Min.

The MG34 was a better made and more versatile weapon overall. The MG42 was a simplified version that was easier to produce and to operate.

It has the "NATO-Brake". The origin gun had often firing-pin breakage

is the german mg3 modern Lmg is the exact copy of mg42?
ikmal017 3 years ago
No, different charging handle and the stock is bakelite. Not to mention its a different caliber and has a considerably lower rate of fire.
Joseph565112 3 years ago
it's based on it, not saying a exact copy but just a more mordern version

It´s the same weapon.
It´s now only built with better steal and use NATO-calibre 7.62mm instead of the Mauser 7.92mm.

assault drum only holds 50 rounds, I'm talking about a whole amoo box of ammo. 250+ rounds

We have 100rd "nutsacks" soft cloth pouches for the SAW. Theyre more preffered cause the box drum is just cumbersome.

true its the best used mg in the world, since 1942. Of course it has been upgraded since then. But it could never be rebuilt by the americans:).

you retard ,how could we not rebuild it?
its old crappy tech

Go look at the M60, which you guys built off the '42.
Dude, old tech or not, the MG42 was (and still is) the best GPMG in existence.

Truly, the M60 was/is a POS that only third world countries are still using, and they were given to them.
