Because as you approach the speed of light the object gains an infinite amount of mass, which then requires a infinite amount of energy to continue to accelerate the object, which is impossible. Therefore the speed of light is the max velocity that can ever be achieved in life, other than some and other sub atmoic particles.

@humanstupidty To truly do such a thing you would need to exit the bounds of our universe, since gravity's effect on matter is boundless.
Leaving earths orbit does not preclude you from movement, for you would either be A: orbiting the sun, B: orbiting the galactic center (if outside solar system), C: Orbiting the galactic cluster's center of gravity, and so on. Even out between galactic clusters, you would still be drawn towards the nearest, largest mass body.

The fact is that the speed of light (which is only constant in a vacuum) is assumed to be an upper speed limit by Einstein in his theory of general relativity. However, every experiment since his assumption has shown that it is a correct assumption (unless those neutrinos from CERN did travel faster than light!).
