Shane Magowan was born in Tunbridge Wells in Kent and attended a posh prep school. He then went to Ireland as you say and then returned to England and attended the same public school as Andrew Lloyd Weber. His accent is what we Londoners refer to as Mockney. A faux cockney accent used by middle class people to appear more street cred. He comes from a priveledged background.

I remember in his punk days he wore a Union jack jacket.
