There isn't much media out there that demonstrates the terror of nuclear war better than Barefoot Gen, even if it is an animation. (Or manga.) So, I will recommend it to friends, too. The film (or original manga) is not anti-american. It is anti-war: it describes how much Japan was brutal during war period, how Koreans and Chineses was descriminited, and how its people was driven mad by the government and war (the father of the family is treaten of "unpatriotic" by his neighbors and the local police because he's against war). And indeed tell about the terrible atomic bomb and its consequences on Hiroshima.

It doesnt matter if he co-writes or directs them, anyone even you can hate their own work they worked hard for. Example, I think it was Max Payne or Babylon, that the director said he hated the movie as a whole with the acting the whole thing was a mess he said. (I think it was Babylon AD).
