@prettyprettythingwow: lol she tried to out sing him at the end?? how would you know?? she was singing lead and he was singing harmony. some people just want to create drama where there is none. i actually prefer their duet version over all others; angie just sounds better doing harmony. sometimes song writers are song writers for a reason: they don't have the voice to make it big as a soloist. as a singer myself, i don't see anything wrong with that.
Fortunate to have seen Angie perform live the only time I know of him coming to MN. My friend Nathan Anderson (also on youtube) opened for him at The Fineline Music Cafe. I had never heard him prior to that. Cannot believe Angie is not the recognized superstar he deserves to be.
I first heard this song sung live on 99X, right there in the studio. I think it was in 2001. If you can believe it, it was better than the original track. Angie is by far my fav. artist.
Faith Hill's phrasing of Cry kills her version for me. Angie's version is the one engraved in my soul; its laser-like intensity he brings to the words.
I dont care who sings it....I dont give a damn if Justin Beiber sang it, I still will looove it. The lyrics make it stronger than the person who sings it.
Now, if Rebecca Black sung it, or Ke$ha and her annoying auto-tone, then I may have a problem... >=P
If I could get my wife to walk into the room, I just might be able to get laid. damn the desperate housewives, and bless Angie. Keep producing, and we'll keep buying.
Interesting to hear this in the original. However if Faith hadn't transformed it and more importantly - the incredible arrangement she uses that takes it into a different league (who did that?) - it would not have got the recognition it deserved.
I love how heartfelt and honest Angie's lyrics are. "The American" is an incredible album, I have over 200 albums in my music collection and there aren't any in there that are similar to it, he's very original and I love his lyrics <3 He sings about a nice variety of topics.
To all who feel that Faith Hill gutted Angie's ballad: Who remembers when she ass-raped Janis Joplin's spirit by covering a classic that Faith herself admitted she had never heard before? Anyone.....Anyone....Beuller? (Take Another Little Piece Of My Heart)
I like Faith Hill, but really theres no comparison to the original. Angie Aparo's version is more raw, emotive and is an altogether haunting hommage to heartbreak. It was very nice of him to "lend" it to her, but the lyric changes just made no sence.
@barrypatrickius You're kidding,....right? Fake Hill took Aparo's gorgeous original, needlessly cut out lyrics, and turned it into plastic, soulless, commercial dog shit. She should receive prison time for what she did to this song.......and it's writer.
My God!...There has never been another song that so perfectly captured this feeling! This vengeance, this heartache. It speaks to me and my personal experience as almost no other song does and ONLY in Angie Aparo's ORIGINAL version! Faith Hill should be apocalyptically ashamed for shortening and basterdising this gorgeous song. Angie Aparo is brilliant and this is his greatest song and greatest performance!
@squintyt4e AMEN. No way I could have said it better, except for the fact that Faith's version sucked, she tried to diva out a song that actually has meaning behind it...
Y'know, while I agree that Faith Hill is a beautiful singer, I always thought the original was a bit more heartfelt...like Aparo was STILL in pain when recording the song. Another thing that makes Faith's version difficult for me to enjoy is the alteration of the bridge verse...The changed version made no sense to me, compared to the original. I understand changing lyrics to make more sense, but it always bugged me that they were changed to make less in Faith's version.
@GCW1978 OMG! That drove me insane when her version came out and it drives me insane now! What possible, purpose could have been served by hacking out those incredibly effective lyrics? The song no longer scans. The melody is caught up short. I can imagine that the suggestion was made by the same asshole who told Celine Dion to leave out a big chunk of lyrics in her remake of Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw You Face" or Madonna in her ridiculously truncated version of "American Pie".
Guys. Pay attention here. Angie sang this song 2 years before Faith Hill did. She made it more popular, but again, you're looking at the same difference between Trent Reznor and Johnny Cash. It's Angie's song. . . .
i may be totally off, but I thought this was recorded by another female in the 80's. before Faith Hill. Maybe some of the older listeners could clear this up for me. Thanks. (my thought was Kim Carnes)

I would think you were totally on with this one. I heard this song in early 90s so no way either of these two "hit" versions are original, the only thing which is odd is that he has the writing credits so who knows.
Angie's manager knew about "Cry" and told him to have it ready to sing for Clive Davis. Angie thought the song was too sappy, but went along with the request. Davis was blown away, signed Angie to a deal with Arista. Davis subsequently left Arista, and with it, left Angie in limbo. What a shame as Angie is one of the most talented performers I have even known. The song was recorded by Angie first, but was made a hit by Faith, who had a huge record company behind her. I love her version also.

Faith Hill's version of this son is such weak tea compared to Angie's. Faith's has no real heart, Angie's has true feeling. Kudos to her on bringing him out and "sharing credit" though.
You should search "Faith Hill Angie Aparo Cry." Their live duet of this song is incredible, and Faith gives Angie the credit he's due for writing a beautiful song. =)
I think both versions are good, Faith sings it the way a woman would if her heart was broken and Angie sings it the way a man would if his heart was broken
Mitchm, You're the one who has it wrong. Angie's version was out and about since "The American," Which pre-dates Faith Hill's CD by five years!
I prefer Aparo's version. For one thing, there aren't enough heartbreak songs from men. Also because the lyrics were rewritten to the bridge, and the original lyrics are better.
Well, suit yourself. It's a matter of public record, so it's pretty much up to you whether you ignore it or not.
I double-checked, and it's three years, not five, so I was mistaken about that part. There's an interview with Faith Hill someplace, too, talking about how she heard the song and approached Angie about it.
Cry, on "American" by Angie Aparo, released Spring 2000. Cry, on "Cry" by Faith Hill, released Fall 2002. Song credits show it was written by Aparo. If you look up here on youtube, you can find her playing it with him and telling the audience how great he is, and how great the song he wrote is.

Angie is so talented,Thank God, Faith has been generous with her fame and has exposed alot of artists to the lime light who would have otherwise remained hidden. Angie Aparo, Lori Mckenna etc.
I came across this song just a couple of days ago and was, well, weeping within a few seconds into the song. This guy is nothing short of astounding. Fabulous singer!

Personally though I think Faith Hill gave the melody something it deserved. but both very beautiful. he still gets credit for the writing too.
Yeah, it's got a wonderful gritty bitterness to it doesn't it? It actually reminds me of a dude I knew. But is this the real track? It sounds a little slower or more acoustic somehow.
FINALLY!!!! I've been trying to find the original artist forever! I used to hear it way before Faith Hill did it, and I always loved it! Everyone thinks I'm nuts when I say I liked the original because they insist her version is the original.
Its about bloody time someone played HIS version and not hers. Faith Hill was cool and all back in the 90's but she should have left this song alone. She butchered it.
Even if you hate her version... She got Angie PAID big time! I knew him when he was too broke to pay attention :-) I am happy to still call him a friend. I miss performing with him.
