Did you know that Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs ever has no Lyle Lovett on it? But Nirvana made the top 10. Doesn't say much for that list.
Several years ago Lyle Lovett and I ended up in one of those tedious lines at the Houston airport. I took a chance and imposed on he and his girlfriend telling him how much I enjoyed a Crossroads show he did with Bonnie Raitt among other favorites he has done. I went on & on about "North Dakota" and how much my wife and I loved it and kept it on the DVR recorder. He could not have been more accommodating, and his girlfriend was a stunner.
Joshua Judges Ruth album. This tune was playing when my alcoholic fiance, found curled up on an old Porlland Oregon Victorian kitchen floor I had just remodeled, finally convinced me that I couldn't save her. No matter how much I loved her. I drank myself some whiskey and next day I packed up the Mustang and headed out days later to a new life in a far away place. I didn't know it then and it took a long time to come to the realization, but moving on saved me from a life of unhappiness.
This is a great song. Just awesome. The Dakotas seem like such a dream to me now and I miss them so much. Been to California, New York, Florida, Texas, Georgia and just about everywhere in the lower 48 and they all have great things but I do miss the Dakotas. Beautiful, awe-inspiring massive land with the greatest people in the world! Skoal! Thanks for everything.
Our wedding song. The DJ asked if he should cut out the beginning and end since it's over 5 minutes and the guests will lose interest. I said if he did that, then he might as well start packing his stuff up now.
The Dakotas have a lot of great people (North & South). I love this song. I wouldn't mind being there right now. Even at 9 below. I got so far away. Probably won't see it for awhile. This song makes me homesick. I'll never see my mother or grandmother again, but I see their faces in my mind every time I watch this video.
Though their music is very different from each other Lovett is much like Warren Zevon, a great musician singer and songwriter who never got the recognition his mkusic deserves.
jee! lyle is almost as good as taylor swift and miley cyrus....lol !what a ruse those two and the music marketing juggernaut play on music fans...maybe those fans will wake up to real music as they age.
@COMEDYTVdotCOM You really like it here? I've lived in north dakota my whole life its nice in the summer but can you honestly say that you like 50 below zero and shoveling snow and scraping ice off your windshield.
This song was co-written with Willis Alan Ramsey. Lyle credits the enigmatic Texas genius as being the biggest influence on him. I can hear Willis in so much of Lyle's music.
Contued Born in Dakota living half of my life there Lyle I herby nominate you for a honerary Dakotan. Don't worry about the rednecks I'll have a shot of Jack with them and I'm sure they would mind another Texan. God bless and Would love to you again in concert your live in Texas tour that ended in Sand Point is one of the highlites of my concer experiancesI hope I've learned the ways off love.
@poolboyinla there's not really alot of rednecks in nd. just moved from there to indiana and pretty sure there's more rednecks here than there!!! & nd ppl dont sound like hill billies nor look n dress like white trash. north dakota has alot of good looking smart successful ppl not saying that just cuz i lived there i am originally from indy.
What a song Lyle had to be in ND in the late fall when he wrote this song. It's buitiful melody speaks to me, I see the ending of year, a life, and addresses the loonlyness of life in rural ND. and sooths the grief of loss for me, at least that is what I get out of it. Born in Dakota living half of my life there
Lyle gets it and I lovett. He is a musician for those who will take the trip with him... simple, deep, and sincere. And without the crap and raunch that smears the airwaves these days.
As with most music of this calibre,You either 'Get it' or you don't. The irony is, he's speakin of boys that don't get it. A special man with special music. We need more Lyle Lovettes.
Bought this when it came out. First time I put in on there was a thunderstorm moving in over the mountains. Right at the beginning thunder rumbled lightly in the background. I still hear it in my mind every time I hear this song. Rikki Lee Jones sings harmony on the album. One of the many gifts from Lyle.
I love all the quieter songs from Lyle's albums. There's about three on each one, they make the greatest compilations. Whatever happens to the music industry, I hope Lyle keeps making records.
I saw Lyle a few years back live at the Fox Theater in Detroit. If you don't know the Fox it is one of the most incredible stages you can imagine. Lyle walked on in intro to his first song, looked around at the venue, and ever so cooly said "nice joint". One of the best shows I have ever witnessed, or heard for that matter. Thanks for everything Lyle.
I met Lyle Lovett a little over a year ago in a coffee shop down where i live, its called cafe sienna and its one of his favorite places to go, apparently. it was really cool because i listen to his songs and im like "WOAH!"
About 10 years ago i saw Lyle when he opened for Bonnie Raitt here in Reno. He had his leg in a cast thanks to the bull that gored him on his ranch. When Bonnie walked out and sang the refrain they had the whole place eating out of their hand what a show. check out his Step Inside this House CD.
I love this song. I have only recently discovered or maybe re-discovered Lyle and his music. So many people make disgusted faces when I tell them I like Lyle Lovett. I think they don't really get it.
Yeah he is very much under rated! I get that look from most people and I never atleast here a song of his on the radio. But he is much better than some of the so called country stars today.

Out of so many great Lyle Lovett songs, this one is just haunting. I think he plays it a little too slow, but still very evocative.
Now the weather's getting colder
It's even cold down here
And the words that you have told me
Hang frozen in the air
And sometimes I look right through them
As if they were not there
