  • They took our jobs!

  • I love Dr. Richard Dawkins but i think i love him even more after he quoted late Dr. Carl Sagan

  • I love this documentary. Does anyone know the name of the song or artist of the music at 6:00?

  • Thats right.... the planet isnt going anywhere.... WE ARE! Pack your shit folks.

  • @ffgew22 ALL MY SHIT IS PACKED, BRING ME TO THE ROCKET

  • You’ve heard about some of these pet projects they really don’t make a whole lot of sense and sometimes these dollars go to projects that have little or nothing to do with the public good. Things like fruit fly research in Paris, France. I kid you not.

-- Sarah Palin (possible next president of the USA)

  • @ghuegel She is such a fucking retard.

  • @itarethetroll Are you insulting retards?

  • @ghuegel.....hah...PALIN, whew, we used to say USA # 1 but thesedays, with the popularity of Sarah Palin, it's more like USA # 1 in promoting fake, cheezy powerful barbiDoll$ who cater to people who fear knowledge, wisdom, etc...

OH and have u noticed that Palin & her pals do the SAME thing Hitler & nazi's did when they started to control politics: they always bash colleges, they always put-down intellectuals & scientists--Because those folks will CHALLENGE their fake, greedy schemes.

  • @robelicit well said, well said. The thought of Palin in the White house would of made the founding fathers move to Canada and quit politics.

  • @party489 ....GREAT point u make--the Founding fathers believed in rigorous debate & challenging ideas & OPEN minded ways of respect & innovation; it was NOT about the tired LAME debate of Religion Vs. Science---

    that's just a time-wasting-boring-duality; those 2 are used by PALIN-PO$ERS & BECKdreks &

their fake pals to fool gullible folks everyday, hah just watch POX News.

--The REAL debate is between honest facts VS. Media-manipulation.

  • I have great respect for mr. Dawkins, but on another note - Dr Freeman? :]

  • wonderful, great stuff!

  • is understanding the origin of all species = understanding the origin of life

  • Dr. Freeman is also the savior of the resistance from the combine.

  • Richard and Christopher are like an evolutionary booster shot for our mind

  • If you look up and pray to the sky, you just might get bird shit in your eye.

  • David Attenborough is a personal hero of mine. Somone of such incredible accomplishments and still has such a personable modest character. Infact it was discovering he had recieved hate mail from hadcore Christians that prompted me to express interest in the athiest movement and religious ignorance.

  • @gpdl00355 david attenborough makes cool science that tad more brutal good for the mind great teacher

  • He has such a homo crush on Carl Sagan.

  • @WasMilkABadChoice its understandable

  • the west has money, resources, libraries, infrastructure many of which are not there in the majority of the world, when you ignore all of that and limit yourself is doing great injustice.

  • thank you for posting this video

  • Richard Dawkins quotes Carl Sagan in almost every single speech he gives. Only one of the many reasons I love Richard Dawkins.

  • Fruitflies = more than one fruitfly.

Fruitfly's = of or relating to a fruitfly.

  • @JONATHAN1984ATHEIST

Haha well done! I hate it when people get this wrong.. yeh yeh, i'm a pedant!

  • Duh! Every One KNOWS seashells are found deep down in rock is because of the "Great Flood"

    You are merely godless.

  • Nobody knows about the "great flood", They believe it.

All evidence outside of the Bible is that the earth is much older than indicated in the Bible and that the earth has changed.

I am far from Godless. I believe your simplistic explanations need to be put aside as childish. You are an adult now, put away childish things (Corinthians).

  • Science offers SQUAT compared to the Holy Bible. You somehow accept that you evolved from primordial slime, yet the notion of

God is somehow ridiculous. Dude seriously, never mind the fact that the Bible is 100% infallible. No WONDER the Bible talks about how the Lord "sits on His throne and LAUGHS"

  • @bRadicalmagic1

no wonder that coward you call a god hides in his little kingdom up in the clouds giggling to himself of to suffering and pain that all humans endure through.

i would rather accept the fact i came from a biological pool than coming from a murderous, sexist, racist homophobic god!

  • B41RUTUAUR16:

Or so you say. I couldn't disagree more, but too bad for you.

  • ha. to bad for me? I'm able to think for myself

"I couldn't disagree more," well the bible says different. if you would like me to, i will send you exact quotes from the bible that uphold sexism and murder.

you can go worship a carpenter who lived over 2000 years ago as your savior ...but the rest of us have brains to use :)

  • @B4IRUTUARU16 NO...I mean too bad for you, you will spend eternity in Hell and for you, even THIS Life is Meaningless.

    Was that a bit clearer?

  • @bRadicalmagic1 hey dude heres a idea for you. why dont you kill yourself now and spend the rest of your fairytayle in heaven :) it will save the trouble of dying from age.

besides people who appreciate the life we have now will enjoy it better then bitches like you scarying people into hell

i feel sorry for you man...brainwashed

  • @B4IRUTUARU16

    YOU JUST DID, oopsie!

  • "Science offers SQUAT compared to the Holy Bible"

    lulz.

I won't even go in to all the incredibily complex and beautiful laws and truths about nature that science has yielded.

So, it will suffice to say that it was science, and NOT the bible, that provided the computer you're using to broadcast your anal and worthless opinions to the world. It's the bible that offers squat; it always has and it always will. What a waste of trees.

  • agreed CroiBriste :)

  • @bRadicalmagic1

I'm not gonna bother exchanging private messages with you. But, just going back to you thinking science offers SQUAT, it was science that helped diagnose your Anaplastic Astrocytoma and, I'm assuming, cured it.

One pair of hands working does more good than a thousand clasped in prayer.

  • @CroiBriste

    Not this time

  • @bRadicalmagic1

Fair enough, but I absolutely guarantee that it will be science that will eventually provide a cure, as it always has, and not religion.

  • Wow AntonViva's comment got 19 thumbs down! That is the most I've ever seen, I wish I could have seen what it said.

  • the woman says unhabitable very strangely. And i reckon humans will make space ships and go to planets which have already been tested if they can be inhabitable. Its a sad thing really. Everything thats happened on earth, all of the memories and history will be completely removed from existance

  • bad ass birds

  • Thanks for posting the vid

what is scary is there are polls on facebook about bible vs science. Bible is winning.

  • @Ramshobraja That is scary. From experience, its hard to break free from religion. Not only was I bombarded with guilt trips and accusations from family members when I shared my new views, shedding my religion I was taught from a young age(or brainwashed) was a hard thing to do. Ironically, it wasn't until i wanted to become a stronger christian and started studying more upon religion when i started to open my eyes. Logically it doesn't make sense and there is too much evidence against it.

  • yes but you must understand 80percent of the world's population have iQs under 50 :)

majority does not always mean right.

  • 80% of the population DO NOT have IQs under 50

75% of the world (estimated) have an IQ between 85 and 115

    50 is mental retardation

  • its just a humorous comment EclecticSceptic

anyone who believes in talking bushes, virgin births, giant arks, is just as ridiculous as a person believing in magic pixie fairies and unicorns.

your either a rational thinker or your not, there's no in between.

  • I thought you were being literal, youtube has no insight into tone of voice soo

  • lol yea alright EclecticSceptic I'll try to keep that in mind :)

  • Screw IQ anyway, I live by the notion that the large majority of people on this planet are idiots.

With the things that people get up to, they might as well have IQs of 5

  • AntonViva probably meant to say "Dawkins you are so cool!".

    A common mistake

  • lol yeah xD. Dawkins is great, and he has pretty much completely destroyed creationist claims, and hopefully begun the slow defeat of religious dogma.

  • That's such a funny comment because you say it with so much force when it is so obviously false.

  • Well..... you can use the term metaphorically, but when you use it for two separate things, than you are going to have to explain what the metaphor - is for.

  • 0:45 "It's a spiritual home for me."

Dawkins really needs to define what he thinks spirituality means. Since the word is very loaded with all sorts of interpretations and meaning, if he uses it to express his awe and amazement at something, he shouldn't use it for the superstitious ridiculous things he comes across in religion. There is a natural sense of suspended reality and a universal state of power one can feel under certain experiences. I'm not defending religion, im testing his speech

  • Think of it as a metaphorical way of saying spiritual, you probably know dawkins more than me and you should know that he didnt mean that quite literaly, hehe peace.

  • concepts of people's spirituality can be relative to culture. For example a statue of a dragon or snake to a christian will not be very uplifting or spiritual, however to someone from an eastern religion, it would have more spiritual meaning. If Dawkins is uplifted by science, then that is what it is, if he is for educating people and helping people based on his beliefs and "spirituality" I couldn't care less exactly what they were, and they couldn't be that bad

  • i don't think he needs to define what spirituality means to him. Its quite obvious i thought. A place where he feels centered and a sense of meaning and calm etc etc. "spiritual for me" is giving ownership to the word spiritual, therefore his interpretation or meaning is 'his'. it is almost implied that we should understand his thoughts on this.

Good food for thought though. Not sure if he would have time to dissect every word in a show such as BTSB

  • What's the piece of music in the background?

  • hey I don't know if you were talking about the piece played in the beginning of the video but if you were it's Georg Friederich Händel. It's the first Movement-Larghetto-from the d-minor concerto grosso op.3 No.5.

  • Thanks for the detail ;)

  • 5:06 "Dr Freeman"

    O.O Half Life

  • wonder how he is with a crowbar

  • Science is interesting. If you don't agree, you can fuck off.

  • @byteresistor rofl

  • If people won't waste their energy for damn religion etc instead they will use it to discovering etc new thing we will be 200 a head in technology

  • the dark ages last over 800 years... so make that 800 years ahead

  • do you know what was the event that ended the dark ages and sparked the rainasance

  • It was no event. People just got tired of living in a world that they do not understand. Well, many of them.

  • For a fictionalized but historically accurate view of the dawn of the renaissance, as viewed from inside the walls of The Church, you can do a lot worse than reading Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose.

Appendix: The name of the rose is "rose." Do not read the book thinking that the name of some particular rose is going to be revealed. The rose is a symbol of theology/semiotics. The book is not about roses, it is about books.

  • Wouldn't it be great if all of humanity were interested in discovering things like a new star or a cure, instead of being complacent and sitting on their asses watching Dancing With The Stars.

  • Science is fucking awesome. Relgious people, are not.

  • That made my day, thank you.

  • Indeed! Thankfully, religion is dying out slowly, and i also thank Richard Dawkins and people alike for helping it....well fuck off quicker.

  • Thank you, sir.

  • @mattyrm ?? So a religous scientist would be awesome & yet not?

  • @STEPHENWRAYSFORD33 Such a thing does not exist and yes you can say there are people that are religious but they claim to be scientists since they simply contradict themselves by accepting the non-facts that religions dish out.

  • @devgreek um the definition of a scientist is someone performing experiments to prove / disprove hypothesis'.

Alas this does not preclude religious people, but education does a lot of damage to religious belief, you probably won't find a scientist that is a fundamentalist, but there are deist and theist scientists.

    Also cognitive dissonance.

  • @STEPHENWRAYSFORD33

that would be one confused person.......

  • did Dawkins just said "its a SPIRITUAL home for me" at 0:44?

  • Did anyone say that we who choose not to believe in fairy tales cannot have spiritual experiences?

  • err hearing it from a hardcore atheist is something quite surprising..

  • If you misunderstand what atheism is really about then it shouldn't (guess this is the sort of things that make Harris not like the term "atheist" so much).

  • Something I'd like to add BTW to my last comment:

"If you misunderstand what atheism is really about then it shouldn't (guess this is the sort of things that make Harris not like the term "atheist" so much)."

Spirituality has nothing to do with faith.

  • yeah yeah, last time i checked no1 actually gives a shit about these things

  • Dawkins wins.

  • Dr. Freeman hahaha!

  • im trying to cut him down and beat him.

  • MaxwellBennett,

    What do you mean?

  • im trying to convince him that his wrong and god doesn't exist.

  • simply dare him to read 'The God Delusion' cover to cover. In return tell him you shall read the bible ( it will be hard work to read the bible, but see it as a comedy. Its ridiculous.)

  • I need help in beating a christian in an argument. He is a pushy christian and does not like atheists.

  • You cannot win an argument against this person. If you could, he would no longer be a Christian, as he'd be violating his sacred dogma.

  • I like to use the Dogma against them. First I tell them they are not a Christian anymore then I am. Of course they disagree, so I tell to read "Mathew 5:27-30" (Google it). I then hand them a knife and say "Do as your God commands if you faith is so strong."

I get some pretty interesting reaction from that one.

  • if you wanna break the barrier of science, why not starting to accept everyone into universe who would love to be scientiest. I am not good with numbers , but I would have loved to explore and obseerve and analyze biology for example, or study the placebo as well as the real effect of esoteric practice on the brain and spine etc. but I cant. I am bad at math. BARRIER BABY.

  • If you are bad at math, you will unfortunately not be able to do much science. Math is the main tool of any science.

Observing and analyzing biology for example requires analysis of statistics... witch is Math.

I am terribly sorry, but "I'm bad at math but I want to do science" is like saying "I am bad at reading, but I want to do literary criticism"

  • Yes, unfortunately this is correct. I majored in Biology, and even in Biology, you need to do some math at a certain point. Especially when you get into some of the specialized areas like molecular biology. Life is chemistry...so expect chemical equations and the like as well.

  • it is possible to train your brain at math. Much like training for sports.

  • Still this shouldn't prevent you from understanding concepts of science. Indulge your curiosity with popular science books, which leave out the equations, but can still give you much greater understanding of things. Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" is a good example of a book that explains some pretty complex ideas with no math at all.

  • "Available now on DVD".. alternatively just watch the whole thing on here for free. Tough choice, haha.

  • I love the obnoxious piano playing while the scientists are busy running around the lab with fruit flies!

  • Actually that's not well over mensa, they have changed their requirements since the stats you're probably taking from.

  • Forget percentiles - the minimum requirement of Mensa is 137 - what are you talking about?. Anyway, the reality is that your version is less intelligent as it's members (although they may have had potential once upon a time) are inherently limited in the ways they can think.

  • And your point is? A high IQ doesn't make you automatically correct. Even Steven Hawking has admitted to making mistakes. I'll say this again, WE DON'T ACCEPT ARGUMENTS FROM AUTHORITY. If we did we'd never have the Theory of Relativity, I mean who are we to question someone as smart as Newton, right? It's all about the evidence, and while having a high IQ really helps to interpret that evidence, it's not a requirement; sometimes a solution is even found by accident.

  • What do you mean?

  • I mean exactly what I said. You implied (at least it seems so) that Christian scientists are the smartest by comparing them to Mensa repeatedly. My point was that in spite of their IQ they have decided to limit themselves by having mostly Christian membership and thereby rarely challenging their viewpoint and once you've gotten to the point where you're used to nobody seriously challenging your ideas you tend to stagnate. It's all about how you think, not how smart you are.

  • I meant to say can NOT

  • you can be a chrisitan and a grown up ! you can't be chrisitan and smart ! you can't FREE THINK

  • its ever so sad how documentaries like this have so little views,25,000, and little 2min clips made by people on their camera phone about debunking science have views on the order of 100,000's. sumthing very wrong w/humans.

  • How true. How very true.

  • i have 126 :D

  • Dawkins is bloody fantastic!

  • "Not explaining science seems perverse. When you're in love you want to tell the world". How come Sagan always has the best quotes?

  • Excellent video Prof. Dawkins.

  • some of the comments on here = proof that theres one born every minute.........

  • I know why. SUNESIS SOCIETY rules! It is a high i.q. society for christians.

  • such a society is impossible...

  • noeatingallowed: A high IQ society for Christians?? That is such an oxymoron! How ironic.

  • At least you are smart in your predictions unlike some of the doomsayers nowadays. If you are going to make a prediction about the future, it is convenience for it to be far into the future because you will be long dead when it is proven wrong.

  • Ah, it always amuses me when someone says we have to go in spaceships to find another place to live.

If you ask me the human race will be LONG extinct well before the Earth becomes uninhabitable. Which will be about five billion years from now.

Although of course we may make it temporarily uninhabitable a good bit earlier at this rate, it'll re-balance itself eventually, after we have gone extinct as a consequence of unbalancing it, proving my point. Humans are stupid like that.

  • yes, Some humans... but if you watch this video, those who make or appreciate science clearly are not, I hope you fall in either category

  • Oh, I absolutely appreciate science.

However human nature isn't that great for long term survival of the species. To irresponsible (rampant breeding) to short-sighted (destructive greed.)

At this rate I'd be surprised if we're still around in a millenium or so. And really surprised if we survive another ten-thousand years.

  • I think progress is being made with the issue of promoting global awareness of man-made environmental problems, especially in the more developed countries in Europe, e g Sweden, Finland, etc. I think it's just a matter of time before more and more countries jump into this movement, and eventually we may be able to revert all that damage...

  • Its not that simple, the destruction is already immense. And the cause of the problem lays partially in that problem so few dare to even mention. Massive overpopulation.

The human population really needs to shrink, else the sheer number of humans will doom remaining ecosystems.

The other things worry me less.

  • I absolutely agree, however I remain somewhat less optimistic that people will refrain from free-reign propagation. Moreover, many people still believe that having children is paramount, and that it is a natural part of life. From an evolutionary standpoint, every species seeks to perpetuate their genes, and from a hubris point of view, are too stupid to realize the vast repercussions of having more than one child; if any at all.

  • Free reign propagation might continue, yes.

And if so we'll go extinct likely. We'll consume our planet, starve, get sick, previously confined horrific diseases will spread like wildfire.

At the very least society will collapse sooner or later.

Sure it might take several centuries. But the planet has a peak carrying capacity for humans. (And we already overtax it as it is really.)

So in the end its population control or death really.

  • Rampant breeding is quickly coming to an end.

  • intelligent religion, isn't that an oxymoron?

  • NOPE. It's an oxysmart! HAHAHAHAHAA! Weeee! Sunesis Society RULES!

  • that is the greatest paradox of all time

  • The overall Christian message is one of peace, love, forgiveness and harmony with other people, including those who do you wrong. It has simply been misinterpreted and manipulated by those who wish to control and influence others. Calling people unintelligent, narrow-minded and angry simply should not be done here. A true Christian would not tell someone to "hump" their belief and leave all the other self-righteous people in the world alone. Poor show - creating segregation and prejudice.

  • issues++

  • and what do you discuss in that society? how best to brainwash the newer generations into your sick ideology? because there is really nothing else to talk about christianity

  • Because you can't be trusted to leave everyone else alone!

  • Christians keep trying to force creationism and prayer into schools, condemnation of atheism as immoral, atheists cannot be elected to government, atheists cannot be Boy Scouts, in some States atheists cannot testify in court, you tell us we're fools and are going to Hell for denying God, you hamper and otherwise impede scientific development, the protection of child molestors by the Church, condemnation of social reform, book banning and burning, should I continue or do you get the picture?

  • noeatingallowed, I truly feel sorry for people like you. That comment shows that you are either a) extremely unintelligent, b)indoctrinated and narrow-minded, c)angry at the failures of your own life, or d) all of the above.

  • extremely unintelligent? I belong to a christian high i.q. society. Google sunesis society and come join if you'd like.

  • Did they give you a Christian IQ test?

  • A Christian high I.Q. society? What's the I.Q. requirement...75?

  • That Christian high IQ society will be as empty as heaven.

  • «Amen to that» hehehe ^^

  • Mr. noeatingallowed

you were left alone fore more than 1600 years

and we know what happens when you were left alone

we propose that you christians , jews and muslims should leave us now

then the world would be a wunderfull place

  • Well it appears your ignorant comment has been torn to shreds! What's the matter noeatingallowed? Cat got your tongue??

  • Why don't you go HUMP your Jesus?

  • Why don't we see if we can get Jesus and Dawkins to hump while acs1978au films it for us with running commentary on how lovely it is that both sides are showing so much love to one another?

  • because christians wont leave science alone

  • I'm a smart Christian.

  • Im sure you are. Christians can be just as smart as nyone. The Big bang theory was developed by a Catholic Priest. But smart people ae still able to have irrational views.

  • "I'm a smart Christian."

Have you ever used your intelligence to question your beliefs?

Not saying "convert now, moron" just look at what your religion says critically. There is loads of smart religious people that have just never questioned it.

  • i didnt intend any offence btw. Whats the problem with changing your belief to a posit?

You can call it whatever you want its not a fact though, not by any definition i can find.

  • no offense taken. There's nothing wrong with changing a belief into a posit at all. I don't have a belief to change into a posit was my meaning. The fact is evidenced everywhere, anytime, anyhow, anyway. The fact is in every scientist's beaker, every biologist's samples, every persons brain.

  • why dont you want it to change?

That is not evidence,it is a scapegoat to avoid saying there is none. I could just as easily say that is evidence for all the different scientific theories which explain those things, but those arguments are useless so i dont, other than then.

Did you know the brain develops by a nerve making millions of connection to many other synapses it doesnt need to and then over time the ones it doesnt need degrade. Good work god, why waste the materials?

  • if you believe he's an alien in spite of evidence to the contrary, then you sir are an idiot. Why would you believe something without questioning it?

  • I agree with AtheistAaron... Normally something like this would almost certainly be rated 4...

  • Carl Sagan <3

  • Why is this video only rated 3 stars? This is a wonderful series.
