What an ugly singing with a very unpleasant vibrato! Yes, this aria isn't just about sheer beauty like Ombra mail fu, but opera is first of all about BEAUTY! She has nothing feminine in her at all. The 3d part is absolutely off pitch! Her embelishment doesn't convince me at all. It's a pity that such women like Coote, Bartoli, Prina, Kazarava, Genaux forgot at all about beauty and a balance between it and expressiveness, force ugly low notes and concentrate only on visceral special effects...
Alice Coote is one amazing woman and her male characters are really touching...she is so that sometimes I wonder if I see a man - tender and passionate instead of woman in male suit..... Brava!!
Alice Coote is certainly not afraid to make less than beautiful sounds. I say this as high compliment. I like the wild sharp edge in her voice. It's a challenging -- uncomfortable even -- sound but so appropriate for "Svegliatevi nel core, furie d'un alma offesa". And then the dolorous tenderness of "L'ombra del genitore".... to, in the last repetion, that little shriek after "a far d'un traditor" before the final "aspra vendetta!" Brilliant.
I was always wondering how Alice Coote really was, as I heard her as Sesto (the early days of my Handel addiction ...), but only one single time on stage. All I could remember was that she had been my fav singer that eve. I like her still, but now there are as well Kirchschlager, Bonitatibus, Semmingsen in this role, who make a bit more of the da capo.
But it was very interesting to hear Coote again, thanks to you!
