they must have a real big seat upstairs.... because each one of them is the best.... it is not a competion guys.. but if I wanted to hear miles Davis I would be watching Miles... so please guys... I believe they came on earth to show us their abilities and they were all masters.... so I bow myself to the greatest trumpet player I've ever heard... thank you Maynard, I enjoyed all of your pieces of art... i'll always be greatfull to have the privillege to hear the sounds of your Trumpet !!!!
This was a heavy hitter....Loved it! Maynard forever! We miss him and always will. I was very fortunate to hear and see him, learned from him, talked to him.... and his many fine band members like Jimmy Ford , Willie Madien, and Rick Kieffer. Chuck Howen 12-3-10
I love to watch him, it is like with Michael Bolton, I always wait for his head to explode. No doubt he has talent and can hit high notes, and has found his niche, but even as a kid, I was always fascinated, waiting for him to play again to see if he would blow up.
Should not have listened to my Wife when Maynard offered to Play at my Daughters wedding in Chicago at the Knickerbocker Hotel. about 15 yrs ago. He was a Great Guy as well as ONE of a kind Player.
The place was packed when we thought we arrived late as Lyn had lost his ticket and I bought him a new one; the floor was vibrating, people were on their feet as Maynard had the place in ecstasy with his roaring upper registar soaring and spreading the two by fours holding up the walls, as we ran down the aisle...
In January of 1960, during a snow storm with roads so slippery it defied the imagination, I flew into Buffalo, barely, sharing a cab with three band members of Maynard Ferguson's "Birdland" Big Band; his saxophonist was Lyn Haliday, taking Wayne Shorter's place.
He could play higher than almost any other trumpeter. And maybe there's something about grooving in the high register as a trumpeter, but my god there's more!
If you wanna hit the Double C get the vid "Ultimate Position" by Roy Roman if it's still even out there. Sounds like porn I know but it's not. It's talking about the ultimate embouchure(sp?) to hit any note pretty much. I went from high C or D to Double C and Double D. Phil Driscoll actually gave me the tape at an Al Hirt concert in Chattanooga. Good luck finding it! It's the real deal tho. We all used it in high school and college. I still play that way.
mmmmmm.....i saw both guys, and sandoval (no ofense)did'nt exite me ....i mean, the guy play very fast licks, very high, but that's all.........i prefer sandoval on cuban music.
any way these cats are amazing so be open minded please, there are a lot of young kids (on you tube)!!!!
Maynard does deserve to be classified as one of the best. But NOT because he was good at improvisation. You can't compare Maynard to Hubbard, Miles, Dizzy, Shaw, or Brown. Maynard's strength was as a LEAD trumpet player in a BIG BAND. His tremendous range, power, and endurance has never been matched. Even the late Bill Chase, who was 10 times better than Maynard in improvisation couldn't match Maynard's range and power. Maynard was great and unique in his own right, one of a kind, deeply missed!
Chaotic with all due respect I disagree with you when you talk about Mayanrd's improv skills. You're probably to young to remember Maynard's Roulette collection from the 50's and early 60's. If you checkout his trumpet work from that period he was playing much more hard core jazz with great improv work. Most young people don't even know of Maynard's trumpet work prior to the late 70's when Rocky came out. Bill Chase had very limited jazz chops he was mostly a screamer and lead type player.
@UpperRegister That is true. Some people must think Maynard's carreer started with "Rocky" ! People should listen to his Charlie Barnet, Stan Kenton and Birdland band recordings, perhaps the finest trumpet work ever...
In fact when Chase was on the band with Maynard for a brief time he didnt play any of the jazz book. When he went on to Woody Herman's band he played a little jazz, however, again Chase is definitely not noted for his jazz chop prowess
I respect your point of view UpperRegister. But I think we will have to agree to disagree. Granted, I didn't start listening to Maynard until about 1972. But if you look at Maynard's body of work from the early 70's until his death, over 30 years, what did he choose to empahsize? Big Band. I am not taking anything away from his accomplishments. Maynard was a GREAT trumpet player. No one has matched his range and power even today as far as I know.
Oh I agree I wouldn't put him on the same level as Diz or Woody Shaw insofar as jazz improv, however, I disagree with the comment about Bill Chase being ten times better than Maynard at jazz playing, that just isnt so. Chase played no jazz when he was on the band with Maynard, when Chase went to play with Woody's herd he played a little jazz but not that much. Chase is more along the lines of Bud Brisbois a screamer who was noted for his jazz/rock fusion during the early to late 70's.
In fact, he was my idol in high school because I played lead trumpet in my high school jazz ensemble. I dreamed of being able to play a "Double High C" like Maynard could. The best I could do was a "Double High G". But Maynard was not a great improvisationalist in contrast to Clark Terry, Hubbard, Miles, Dizzy, Shaw, or Brown. But at the same time, not ONE of these guys could do what Maynard did! Maynard was GREAT and UNIQUE in his own right.
lol. Okay. I will agree with you there. But I was never really a big Don Ellis fan. I have a couple of his LP's. I would listen to them from time to time. Don't tell anyone, but I even have a couple of Chuck Mangione's LP's hiding in the stack. lol.
Hey I love Chuck Mangione's playing he was a great innovator for his time and wrote a lot of great charts. I think because of Chuck I had to go out and purchase a flugel horn lol
lol. Yeah I know. But the local smooth jazz station here in Sacramento plays the SAME Chuck piece I heard on the radio in 1973 or 1974 OVER AND OVER AND OVER since I arrived here 13 years ago. If I hear it again I think I will lose it! lol.
...What? Matt Wallace came out and bursted out with fire and soul, just took the stage presence and killed it. I'm a hardcore jazz listener and purist, I know a good solo and a bad solo when I hear one, and this my friend, was a nasty solo. Go Matt, fuck you.
dude im a hard core jazz "purist" ok. the last time someone double timed body and soul was charlie parker! AND HE GOT BOOED..hello!!!
this video is chap ok? do you understand that. no you dont because you most likely live in a corn field in the mid west or live in houston or in new york where the jazz is just straight bebop and the scene is dying there.
it is why Maynard Ferguson is one of the greatest trumpet players of all time.. he deserves to take his seat with the likes of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie..etc..
@MegaBanne True, but you could argue that about armstrong too. Dizzy has him in technique but not range. The reason those guys are considered the greatest is because they literally created their respective styles of jazz... Miles Davis was known for his tone, melodic ideas, and ability to continually push the envelope and evolve his playing styles. Thats why he's considered one of "the best". Don't get me wrong though, Maynard does deserve that title as well. I'm just sayin.
@lilyellowduckiePhD dont forget miles is allso famous for takeing credit from lots of songs that he did not wrote. Take freedom jazz dance for example.
I say they are all good in their own ways. It really depends on what stlye you like better. In my opinion and a lot of others Maynard was the sickest man out there!
that kind of a question smoothbv makes me want to commit a suicide for people still being 50 yeers behind apes to think that music can be judged in a way you judge footbal or you can make a roaster out of it.
For gods sake stop questioning, who is better than who and instead just listen, comment if you want and aprecieate if you like.
yeah that's right, he did an amazing version of cherokee with that guitarist too. the session included Cherokee, My Heart Tells Me, I've found a new baby, and Body and Soul. just watching this clip again i think at 3.49 they do a 'Just Friends' quote from the end of Parker's version with strings!
The reason I became a musician! From the first album-"Boy With Lots of Brass" through all the various small big bands etc.. Maynard was the man and a great supporter of young players and jazz education in general. We all miss him here in Boston! I can still here that shake on a high "A" !
i am very lucky i got to meet him about four months before he past. he signed my horn. hearing him live is so much better. his notes ring and stick with you forever. Thank you Maynard you changed my life
