The reason I don't like Metallica is because James Hetfield's voice... always a friggin E, ALWAYS, with that same touch of growl. Predictable, mundaine and boring. I'm willing to praise them for being an influential metal band, but they're just not a complex enough sound for my tastes.
I would'nt go as far as saying Metallica sucks give credit when its due early Metallica were awesome... yes overatted at times but they cannot help what fans come out with... Opeth are way more talented though.
just saw these guys with my son .... truly great ... someone commented earlier about a great mix of metal with melodic .... couldn't describe it better myself ...
come from a prog-rock backround and i even hear elements of ELP and YES in their powerful early days in the music of Opeth... I
i think that opeth is the first band whomanaged successfull to mind melodic and death metal to a new genre of music and this song just proves it cause it fills you with different emotions till the end
LuredBySirens: What's "closed-minded" about it? I think "we" who dislike Metallica dislike it because we don't like who it sounds. Nobody cares how much a band pushes boundaries of obscurity, it's just not interesting to listen to...
I swear, Blackwater Park has got to be one of the most listened-to albums in my collection, along with Ghost Reveries. I just love the mood it sets. Songs like this make you feel like you've been to both Heaven and Hell once they are over. The talents of these men never ceases to amaze me. I wish bands like Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Katatonia, etc. were more popular, but at the same time I'd rather jam to them with people who truly appreciate their work than with unappreciative halfwits.
@nmo29t "Metallica sucks?" That comment seriously has 21 thumbs up? For fucks sake. Give respect where respect is due. They have influenced more Metal bands than probably anyone else. I don't think they're in the same ballpark as Opeth creatively, but they did a lot for Metal. They don't quite have it like they used to, but I Death Magnetic was a large improvement over St. Anger. I could ask any of my non-Metal loving friends to name a Metal band they know, and they'd for sure say "Metallica".
@89thunder Whatever. I'll let you carry on with your close-mindedness. They aren't what they used to be, I'll say that, but in the late 80's they were great. Just because you listen to a more obscure band such as Opeth (who I think is superior to Metallica too), doesn't automatically mean Metallica is commercial crap. Obscure bands like this are always pushing the boundaries and creating a new sound. Metallica did the same thing in the 80's. Give credit where credit is due.
@LuredBySirens Quite true. I can't say for sure of course, but if you were to argue to any member of Opeth that Metallica is (or at least was) garbage, you'll probably wind up with a black eye.
@nmo29t Thank you for the cultural lesson. I came here to listen to Opeth for the first time, I really enjoyed it. I learned two things: 1) I enjoy Opeth. 2) Opeth fans are douchebags.
@paradigmentropy Nice story bro, but metallica is so overrated...and their fans are the real douchebags, just see the fanboys trolling and saying shit, it's so lame...
@mayhemguy1993 : Maybe you should look up Opeth 'name that tune.' Mikael plays the first few notes of 'to live is to die' and says quote "If that song didn't exist, neither would we." It pays to pull your head out of your ass every once in a while. you might learn something.
MY FAVOURITE SONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG... OPETHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I tried to get into opeth on 2 separate occasions before this. I must have listened to the wrong songs because this is literally the first time I have ever heard this band use distortion.
That's exactly what I told Mikael Åkerfeldt the first time I ever saw them live. I had never heard them before then. My band opened for them that night. I hung out to hear them and was simply blown away. They've been a huge influence on my music ever since.
@JoshTAnderson36 It's amazing how the guys that listen only underrated/underground group/artist believe they are superior to the mainstream masses. I personally enjoy both.
@Shadowspell86 Depends on what you classify as mainstream? There is mainstream and then there is mainstream. Opeth on the other hand is none of these. Opeth is simply just beautiful music written by a really funny guy who loves music, and like to "fuck his wife on Hamilton island in Australia". <- If anyone got that... You must have enjoyed the gig. :)
maybe the greatest work of all time.wanna learn the stuff like you made it?… call Muhammad Noureldin Darwiche, advanced progressive rock teacher portal314@gmail.com
This band lacks one scintilla of musical relevance. They're prog for people who don't understand prog. They're metal for people who think they're above metal. They're jazz for people who don't listen to jazz. This is utterly pretentious, unimaginative tripe. Listen to RUSH and obliterate your ignorance of music.

Every one of their songs are absolute masterpieces raining of influences of social pressures such as terror, horror, relationship loss, apocalypse, and..... As any Opeth fan would know, "Underwater textures" ;)
Absolute mastepiece by probably the most talented band in the world. LISTEN to this song - pick out the individual melodies and marvel at just how amazing Opeth are!
Wow... I'm not a metal fan at all, but this band is utterly amazing... The emotion that is behind their music is so compelling, and the dynamics are so well-orchestrated. I was almost put to tears when I listened to this album.
@NDF211Gunner While I'd just class them as progressive/technical death metal, I do think they mix some doom and gothic metal in their style. Even black metal on their earlier records. And ofcourse, especially in later records, plain soft progressive rock, which is awesome too.
Opeth can play just about anything, they can play this "wizardry" live and, in fact, I think they are even better live! People who say otherwise aren't informed and have most likely looked at one video and didn't like the growling xD They truly are magical
Those filters they put on his voice during the first couple voices sound really cool. Maybe part of that is because he can actually sing well and the added technology assists the song instead of covering up its flaws
I just wanna say something really important to me: This was the first ever metal song I heard. This is the song that got me into Opeth and into metal. Through the efforts of the years from my early teens, to my twenties, this band has kept me company all the way. Thank you Opeth!
I just listened to this album for the first time last night.
I really prefer Ghost Reveries.
This is just so cold and dark. Its the only way I can describe this album. Maybe If I'm having the worst day of my life I'll put in this album again, but I doubt I'll listen to it often.
that said its really really good. Its just too much for any "normal" day.
@FloppinPoptart623 Opeth is known to give boners. I think they put the "Hot Teen Sucking 18+" there to put it in its rightful category of "boner-inducing".
fuck obama. fuck him in the ear with a big rubber dick! he has fuckall to do with opeth.

Can't see these guys doing an album with Lou Reed anytime soon.

@biakaba Actually, that's EXACTLY the kind of thing I can imagine Mikael doing. I wouldn't put it past him.

Opeth can play just about anything, they can play this "wizardry" live and, in fact, I think they are even better live! People who say otherwise aren't informed and have most likely looked at one video and didn't like the growling xD They truly are magical

If this band where to do the music for diablo III it would be awesome.

@Coldreaper666 lol it's probably for the best mate. You'll get 'Rolled' :P ... An Opeth song/vid is a pretty accurate alternative though :)
