The reason people are slamming this vid is because it's become faddish to make fun of expert village drumming videos. However, lot of them are trash but this is an exception. Great job!
@RobertoAvilesMusic in case you haven't already gotten an answer, i'll see what i can do. you asked about how to loosen your hi-hat, now, i'm no pro, but they're should be some kind of nut-type-thing around the bell of your top hi hat, simply unscrew it a bit to make some space between the bell and the nut. The bottom hat should already be able to move freely.
I don't see why all you people are complaining. He's clearly just giving tips to people who are just starting to play drums. Sure, when you go more in depth, you can experiment and play them however you want, but he was just showing the typical way they should be played.
And if you listen and watch when he actually plays, he played the jazz beat on his hi hat pretty good, and he had good form with his hands.
You should have thought about what you were going to say a little before you made this video. You seem to have no clue what you're going to talking about next. A complete waste of our time.
hes just talking about teqnique and the basic skill. But resally i play it high on some song like as high as it goes. and sometimes low. It just depends on you
Am I the only drummer that puts his hi-hat closer to his crash and his snare closer to his body so your righthand can't possible be in the way of your left hand while hitting the snare?
no, he's not making shit up.. i do it myself, it makes more of metallic sound... check out "Keep'Em Separated" by The Offspring, The drummer uses this technique at the start, it's quite cool. =)
i gess this is just for noobis..but if ur a noobie, follow ur feeling..dont set up ur set exatcly like he, he got difrent feelings about it i gess......so i dont relly sould whatch this vid, cuz i just get enoyed :/
I think this guy is forgetting that hi-hat setup is different for different styles of music. Example: I know I'd like to compensate with an extra closed hi-hat somewhere on my kit for when I'm playing metal. Reason? I don't have time to use a drop-clutch, and I'd like to have my primary hi-hat readily open at any given time. Plus, while the hi-hat is an important part of the kit, building everything around it is kind of a pointless idea.
maybe it's pointless for a metal drummer like you, but when your kit is simply four heads, it's important for beginners to get some advice on where good placement of the kits pieces can be.
Plus. This guy isn't even teaching metal drums and metal techniques, this is more aimed at your basic blues/rock set up.
Disregard my last comment. I have no idea what I was thinking when I wrote it. I get the feeling i was drunk and it was like 3 in the morning, because I don't even recall writing that.
The most important thing with HH setup, is to have access to the top and bell of the HH. Accents on the HH should be played with the fat part or shoulder of the stick on middle of the hat. It's hard to do when you hat is 5 feet high. Also, foot position is crucial! Too far away and your cross stick playing style will KILL you. I use 13" hats, my HH stand setup is everything.
The hi hat is one of the most versatile parts of a drum kit.. If your don't understand what this guy is doing, then you have a lot to learn. I would of like to of seen some left foot work, maybe some syncopated splashes while playing the ride.
@LewisTheDrummer1992 I was actually trying to find out how to make my hi hat sound better. When it is closed it sounds to flat with no resonation at all and when I have it slightly open it sounds to splashy. I was wondering if you had any advice or if it's just my hi hat.
'high' hat ? ... hi-hat.
