This song is all about Ian and the DC hardcore movement, you fools need to recognize, this whole album is about the movement, it has been considered for the library of congress. If you
were there; PBC, 25th Street Beach club, I would listen to you, Fugazi, whatever. Earn your ink, the rest of you you are slaves. Peace out.. VBHC for life..
It's strange, growing up you thought the music your parents listened to was lame. But you never thought you'd end up the parent and your kids saying that the music you listen to is lame. e.g sonic youth-teenage riot.
I remember in like grade 7, all this shit was just ending, few years after Cobain's death. I wasn't into music back then, at 11 and 12 years old, but i remember the "cool" kids always listening to this kinda stuff, SY, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and White Zombie and stuff. Funny thing is, they weren't even into the stuff for real reasons! Back then, no internet, just MTV and radio selling this stuff. The bands were legit - the fans weren't. Found out later I was the actual audience it's for!
related to the top comments* A kid in my class back in highschool used to wear a Goo shirt, so i was like FUCK YEA! SONIC YOUTH IS THE SHIT! only to be let down with a "What, is that a band?" I just laughed, told the guy to go check 'em out; i can't give SY justice using only words.
If you listen to the lyrics of this song closely a lot of it eerily describes the way things are in this country right now. Sonic Youth must have been psychic, because it's like they saw the future and it's almost scary how right they were. Maybe if more people had listened to this album we wouldn't be a 'Daydream Nation'
These guys broke up, Kim and Thurston divorced, I just found out, got pissed, and came here, I dedicate this song to my ex, and the members of the band. Your music will live on.
@DrkAllanon Yeah, alternative rock, their style changes quite a lot over their career but thats a pretty good approximation they have Punk and indie vibes too
this is a truly great band. this is the kind of song where if i'm in a car with people i barely know and they tell me to put some music on, this is what i put on. everyone's feeling this shit. hell yeah.
@DaCUBSstillSuck I know how you feel my favorite bands are Depeche mode, Sonic youth, The Cure, Beck and David Bowie. Most of my classmates haven't heard of any of them
@DaCUBSstillSuck Join the club. Not even that, but ALL my teachers (well, the young ones that just came out of college) don't know them either. But its okay, because its good knowing you are the only one who knows this band instead of a bunch of "wannabe's/sheep" start listening to the same thing.
@DaCUBSstillSuck sucks being nearly 50 and loving Sonic Youth music and all kinds of punk while people my age listen to crap! Least my kids appreciate my music!
@DaCUBSstillSuck Sucks that you think that "sucks" being the only one that know what is Sonic Youth in the school, because most of kids in the school are shit, believe me.
@mili1072 No, i only know one other kid who listens to bands i like, (scratch acid, dinosaur jr, glazed baby, jesus lizard etc) and i play the drums he plays guitar and we have no one els. Its either you like rap or death metal, or you're emo, i still don't know what emos listen to. I see what you mean, but it doesn't mean the whole school and all its asshats have to agree with you a select few would is nice.
@mili1072 I didn't say you can't like multiple genres, but in most cases its either all rap, all metal, or all emo. I also didn't say you were any of those people, i just said its nice to have others to play music with is all.

@youhavegeniusshins What's wrong with nerds? They run the world and apparently have good taste in music. I'd rather be a nerd than whatever you are :)
@youhavegeniusshins "The only thing that proves is that you are a fucking nerd." - youhavegeniusshins. not exactly a nerd friendly comment...Maybe you are confused about what profane words are and how they affect people's perception of a sentence...Oh well. Goodbye.
@sensationaldenny Hehe, I agree with all of that, except for the not liking it part. It's nice that you can appreciate what Sonic Youth have done, even though you are not a fan :)
@thebitterend90 There is no such thing as obscurity anymore. Hipsters listen to Arcade Fire, Animal Collective and worship The Smiths and Joy Division. The fact that hipsters only listen to obscure music is a myth and a lie. In fact, you ask a hipster who wrote Blank Generation or who came previous to The Velvet Underground, they'd stare at you with an empty facial expression.
@GrungeRockabilly i think that you mean there is no such thing as hipster anymore by your statement, because most of the bands i listen to are only known to a couple thousand people throughout the 7,000,000,000 on the planet. i think, when compared to mainstream music, that's sort of obscure, dude. you could argue this subjective point all you want, but i don't think you're ENTIRELY right. though i do believe you possess a valid point somewhere in that angsty mishmash.
@guardianlink12345 Oh no, there are hipsters. But how can anything be obscure when an entire group of people listen to and proudly flaunt supposedly obscure bands?
Sonic Youth has always been a music snob's first choice. I mean no one sound like them. They r intelligent and almost parented crazy artists that couldn't handle a life without drugs. My all time favorite. I like that I know hanging out with Thurston and kim or Lee would b chill. They just seem like interesting people. The fact that they never sold out, copied other people, and experimented with sounds makes them actually original.
@takadi no it's not, there's inspiring music and uninspiring music. This is of the former group, forget about trying to market this as a 'hipster' song, it's just beautiful music and by saying its hipster deters people from ever hearing this masterpiece because they don't want to look pretentious
soooooooo we're talking about porn here? I kid no one not, ive been with the internet for quite the whiles and NEVER has someone been in a debate about porn over a rock song.
@skeetshooter99 its also a massive form of corporate advertising industry (im guessing you realise whats fucked up about consumerism and advertising if you're on a sonic youth video), and a lot of people who make the videos don't enjoy it, they just want to make money, which is wrong because you should do what makes you happy instead of selling your body for sex. you cant blame people for watching it though, its natural and hard to resist. blame the fucking government for keeping the videos
@skeetshooter99 you were right i shouldnt have acted like that, im sorry. it just annoys me that pornography has ruined the perception of sex being a form of love for a lot of people. i dont think they realise how many people regret making the videos later on in life when they become devoted to a person and don't want other people masturbating other them having sex because they want to share that with the love of their life, but its too late because they've already made the video.
