  • We're a middle school band and we're playing all three movements for our competition! So excited!

  • Even though it's been almost five years since I graduated from school, I still find myself humming this song at work.

  • The alto solo in this makes me want to cry *sob sob* so pretty...

  • Played this my freshman year if high school and we made it to the state semi finals with it.

  • man im the first alto in 8th grade wing ensemble (top band) and were only playing the first movement because the low brass at our school sucks :,( i really wanted to play the 2nd movement its a beautiful sax solo >:)

  • Is this concert, symphonic, or wind ensable?

  • My band and I are playing it for our concert recently coming up... it is truely a very powerful song :)

  • Ahh, I love it when a song has the Dies Irae chant! This song is wonderful!

  • thumbs up- north shore band.

btw I play trombone. Guess which one I am. I'll give you all a hint:

gosh I'm weird and in wind ensemble

  • You like the songs cause they're all jaunty and happy. The stories to these songs are the complete opposite. Do you all know what they are?

  • @LkVOIDREALM The first movement is about a man and his crew who go on a boat ride around a lake. The man never learns how to stop the boat and neither does the crew. They keep going around in circles around the lake until they die. The second movement is about a man who mistakes his love for a deer and shoots her. The third movement is about a man whose wife is so terrible that the devil decides to take her down to hell. The woman ends up being so terrible that even the devil can't handle her.

  • @CapnKatKat69 lol i know

  • I hope our trumpet does a good job :/

  • SO glad to be playing this! I absolutely LOVE the second movement.

  • Ahh...this is so pretty...

  • Playing this for our contest in April. 1st part clarient, middle school Honor band. Can't wait. (:

  • @CapnKatKat69 Same, except high school concert band and I'm 2nd, my 1st is freaking out but we're getting used to it. :)

  • Third movement is my favorite movement. The low part is so fun to play

  • playing this in 7th grade boom

  • I remember my old band director telling our band last year the story behind the 3rd movement and I remember the whole band laughing at the way he described it. I miss our old band director and his energy during the song :( these 3 songs are soooo amazing and fun to play though :D

  • for flutes, on the third movement, on the chromatics at the end where it is like high F, E, bE, D ect. Use harmonics. Use the bB key and play bB, A, bA, G and up again. Blow a little harder and the bB will come out as an high F.

  • @nobodywillknowmyname they will eaither come out flat or sharp if you do that, better to use the real fingerings

  • 6:39.

  • this thing is so damn hard to count...

  • @Cynthiahe1 no its not

  • haha i doubt anyone will believe this but i go to rudder middle school and our honors band played this when i was in seventh. i skipped symphonic and went straight to hohnors. this is no doubt the most challenging piece ive ever played.and it was the completely original version. but it also was the most. the other most challenging piece i know is sleigh ride which is almost as hard as this one. lol.

  • @disturbeddemons1 our symphonic band has a ton of seventh graders and we're playing this.

  • Our middle school symphonic band gets to play this

  • I'm playing this for contest This is really emotional:) I'm in the 8th grade and play the flute does anyone have tips for me... on this song???

  • @530Tobias on the third movement it helps to sit as straight as possible for the high notes. (:

  • YAY BAND<3 This is the first song of concert season, I'm a freshman and I play clarinet, and I just love the part it's beastly.

  • @MostRockinGirl im a freshman and i play clarinet too :) which part do you play? i play first part (:

  • Bar 224. I need not say more.

  • we just got this piece.. well i got it ahead of time, im a Clarinet, and i absolutely love this. it makes my heart super happy :DDD

  • I played this in middle school and no joke in our concert people starting crying in the second movement... this is a very difficult and emotional song and you guys made it just that! Keep up the good work!

    - James White (Band Director for Katy ISD)

  • Playing this in band!:) (9th grade)

  • I am amazed every time I hear this song, and every time I feel as if it is the first time, It brings fond memories of my first competition. The powerful flow of "A Longford Legend The sadness of "Young Molly Bawn", the bounding joyousness of "Killyburn Brae", all inspire deep emotions. I wish anyone who plays this the best of Fortune.

  • This might sound cliche... but how can anyone dislike a peace of work this grand?

    Seriously... wtf

  • 6:42 love it!

  • クラリネットかっこいい(*'▽'*)

  • I played the euphonium solo in movement two, screwed up bad from being nervous, broke down into tears on stage. Worst concert ever

  • we're playing this now!!!!! 10th grade :)

  • i was the euphonium for the second movement, this is an amazing compositiion

  • I had the clarinet solo on movement 3! :D

  • Played this freshmen year, and i remember loathing it the first day we had to sight read it. I couldnt believe i'd have to play this piece and bear it.

three weeks later? I never wanted to stop playing it. i can still play the first 30 or so measures of nearly all the movements from memory. amazing memory from freshmen year :]

  • I played this is 7th grade at u.i.l district, and we got a 1 ! :DDD

  • the tone of this band is simply wonderful!

  • @HotPinkSteroids well, North Texas University is basically one of the best College/University bands there is

  • Ha. I played this in middle school.

  • @beccachristinew2010 me too! :D

  • My band director has just decided that we are playing this...eff.

  • whats the name of the fanfare at the end of the third movement called? so much power.

  • @ThePopeIsDope13 killyburnbrae i think i played it in middle school like 9 months ago

  • @zombieslayer8522 do you go to westbriar/westside?

  • The Fort Clarke Middle School Symphonic Band Played This Piece For Our Performance in The NAI! :D

I Play the second Horn Part So Awesome :33

  • did you play for a rating? If you did, what was the scores?

  • So much better than itunes one. Well worth buffering time

  • Movement 2 brings me to tears everytime.

  • @themaddog7188 its a beautiful movement. especially when you know the story behind the music...its about Young Molly Bawn...One day a man went hunting...and he shot a deer and when he came close to it he realized he shot his love, mistaking her for a fawn... and he just sobbed and pleaded for death, since he can not live without his love...and the movement you can feel and hear the crys of the man, and it touches you...

  • i play the wind chimes on this music its challenging but i like the song =D

  • First movement is in 2/4. I'm guessing it's somewhere close to 105ish bpm.

  • i played this for junior districts. i'm proud 2 say that i was a trombone 1 :-)

  • @localocalopezes I am playing it too right now in high school. I am a trombone 2.

  • what is the tempo of the first movement?

  • I play this in school ^.^

  • My Junior High band got to perform this in Indianapolis at the Band of America Festival. It was so much fun, and we were so good! Thanks for putting it up here, it brings back so many good (and some not quite so good) memories!

  • i played this song in middle school

now most of the people who played this song excelled in life

our band director had faith in us and we overcame

  • My band is playing this at our last concert of the year and every time I hear the 2nd movement I can't help but think of Lord of the Rings...

  • this is sooooo much like west highlands sojourn omg

  • My band is playing this you play it a little differently then we do.

  • My band is playing this and i always get goosebumps at 4:27

  • Last year A band member in our high school band passed away the day we played this before a gem state ensemble, I have never felt so much power in music before that day. The emotion put into that song was indescribable! When you play this song for your contests or just for a concert, Think of something you love, then imagine it is gone forever and I promise you, you will play like you've never played before. Good luck to everyone who plays this challenging piece of music. :)

  • well done

  • @happypandas9 luck! :)

  • I played this song in 7th grade I loved the Clarinet part, but I was stuck playing the Bass Clarinet :(

  • You spelled the third movement incorrectly. Killyburn has an "i" not a "y" after the first letter.

  • i played this song this year in band

  • second movement is soo sad

  • I played this in High School and it is definitely on my list as one of my all-time favorites!

  • Bill Bachman went to NT.

imagine a percussion section full of the worlds most amazing drummers/keyboardist

and at 4:40 ish it sound like let it be me

  • Bill Bachman went to NT.

imagine a percussion section full of the worlds most amazing drummers/keyboardist

  • we're playing these three movements for our spring concert XD (i think) I really hope the band director decides that we will cause I play the chimes and I love the third piece! :D

  • i feel very fortunate that i play the alto sax solo in the second movement. its one of the prettiest things ive ever heard!

  • This song is soooooooo easy. Stop spazzing out about it. If my non-varsity middle school band can play it, than shouldn't a high school easily be able to play it? I've played way harder music than this.

  • @FunnyPurpleChickens easyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy you are very very mad

  • @aspanico94 No. I'm just Asian, like the rest of my band/school (85% Asian to be exact).

  • @FunnyPurpleChickens There is an extraordinary difference in quality between middle school, high school, and college bands. Just because this piece is "easy" to you, because honestly, yes, the rhythms are, it's the quality of how it's played. Besides, getting a one in middle school is a piece of cake. When you get into high school, you don't just show up, play right rhythms, and get a one. You have it all wrong.

  • @cntheart It's not easy having the best middle school band program in the entire state of Texas. And besides, correct notes and rhythms, will only get you a third division rating. Go to the UIL website if you want to know the criteria to recieve a one.My band teacher judged the middle school uil contest for region 24 yesterday and NO BAND RECIEVED A ONE. As you can see, recieving a one in middle school is very difficult.

  • Our MIDDLE SCHOOL NON-VARSITY BAND is playing this song for the UIL contest. We're the only non varsity band in Texas to play a grade 4 piece (ever). We've always recieved all first division (superior ratings). Our clarinets are ninja when they play those crazy runs with septoplets (or whatever they're caled). Our flutes sound beast on their runs too. Last year our band played green bushes (also a grade 4 piece). GO RICE MIDDLE SCHOOL!!! There's a reason why it's called Rice, ASIAN DOMINATION!

  • @FunnyPurpleChickens Not true, my school, Abell junior high, played a grade 4 last year. We are non-varsity too. We got a 1 on it, so yeah.

  • @xShimmyChangax I was talking about non-varsity MIDDLE SCHOOLS in the state of Texas.

  • @FunnyPurpleChickens middle school and junior high are the same thing... haha...

  • @SuperAnnabanana2013 Wowwwwwwwwww.... I never knew that... I was talking about this year, not last year.

  • @FunnyPurpleChickens Junior high = middle school. Smooth move bro.

  • 3rd movement is the funnest to play

  • The Second Movement , Young Molly Bawn, is so beautiful, despite the horrid poem behind it. The Third Movement, Killyburn Brae, is really fun to play, Especially on a Bari Sax. It also has a story behind it, but that one is kind of a fun story.

  • @ghanji2000us whats the story behind that one ?

  • I thought my high school was doing a pretty good job at this piece, and then I found the UNT version... yeah.

  • i love playing this song! :] it my favorite

  • ugh im playing the clarinet solos in districts in a month... and i am WOEFULLY unprepared....

  • @L8Rdudesanddudettes well well well, heres to you! may the worst come your way!

  • @L8Rdudesanddudettes I know. i have some of the flute solos. and i am playing them at festival in a week.

  • I'm first chair euphonium at the SEMSBA music festival next month, and I'm sooooo pumped to play this song.

  • @maroon5freak11

    Go euphoniums!

  • I'm My middle school band is playing this. i love this song.

  • @littlemissarmybrat Its either your middle school band has some talented players or you all ASIANS because this three peice movement seems alittle hard for a middle school band.... especially if your a clarinet or a flute..wooo

  • @BigTeo55 I play the flute and piccalo part. it's really chalanging. and i am NOT asian. i just practice a lot

  • 3:40

    *faints*

  • all three of the movement could be spilt apart and they would still be amazing

  • Ugh...hate the bass clarinet part in movement 2. ish so boring D: I'm playing it at in my middle school band and it so borrriing, but its really beautiful when put all together! <3

  • >bonushumor

Me too!! I'm playing the Alto Sax.

    ちなみに日本人ー

  • i play the alto sax, and honestly this whole piece is a work of art. i just love how the alto sax can stand out of all the instruments. just listen in every part. just beautiful. Young Molly Bawn is pretty! wonderful vibrado on the solo.

  • i play the tenor sax and i absolutely love this song and i think the 3rd movement is the best i mean when do the lower reed get to be heard like that though we mix in with hte brass but its still fun to play out like that lol i hope we do good with this song in contest

  • Bassoons FTW =D

  • so beautiful :')

  • Third movemnetn is awesoem

  • i have all the sax solos when we play this in competition!

  • I might be playing the trumpet solo!!! I love this piece!!! It's so amazing!!! I love our hays rebel band!!!!

  • i love this piece . its fun but hard at the same time when you have to switch parts like me. imagine going from 2nd clarinet to 1st clarinet and is expected to have it perfect the day after you got the part :]

  • i play the flute and we are gioing to play it this year and im so happy and scared at the same time its such a beautiful peice i dont want to mess it up with my playing

  • @Demichi19 Practice practice practice! I played the flute part when I was in high school, it's not too bad! Just keep practicing all those runs :)

  • i have always loved this peace, i played trumpet on it and will think of it fondly forever.

  • I was chosen to play timpani on this. very fun tune to play(:

  • Played it in 8th grade, and our band got highest marks. Probably my favorite piece that I've ever played in band.

  • I played this song when I was in wind ensemble in 8th grade and it was pretty awesome.

  • im going to ask my band director if we could play this song im in 8 grade..wish me luck

  • Too many people believe the first movement is hardest just because it has the most notes and such, while the second would be hardest because you have to put in emotion, people need the realize this

  • our band is playing this 4 a contest its soo hard!!!!

  • Our symphonic band at Nederland High School in Texas played this last year. I can honestly say it's one of the funnest pieces of music to play with great parts for everyone.

  • My high school band played this in 2000 after our lead alto sax was killed in a motorcycle accident. May you rest in peace, Lane.

  • This is amazing, I really hope my band director decides to use this song for competition.

  • I loved my bass clarinet part! I had too much fun with it. I knew that music like the back of my hand! (: (: (: (: (: (: (:

  • amazing version!!! i just performed this last night!

  • at first glance i thought to myself, "this is suicide..." not so bad now :P

  • I MIGHT PLAY THE SOOOOLOOOO!!! :DDD

  • I wish I played this in middle school. My teacher wouldn't let us go any higher than a grade 2 piece. But my first day of high school I jumped up to a grade 6. That was amazing. Beautiful piece. My director almost cried during it. -3

  • When I played this, our saxaphone played so beautifully...and one time our director played it and there wasn't one person who wasn't crying. It was gorgeous.

  • played it in Middle school as a sevie fun but parts are boring

  • played this in high school and loved it. even the boring practices were fun with this song. but i think this performance could use a little more tuba:), .. but just call me biased to that respect.. you can never have enough tuba. well good tuba at least..

  • 6:43, "The Shining" lol

  • our school band attempted this two years ago when i was a freshman (high school). we did moderately well. ive been trying to get my band director to try it again because 1, its awesome, and 2, i can actually play the whole thing now (sax)

  • i have the euphonium solo in the second movement... haha, i hate solos!!!

  • we did this uil last year. IT WAS BEAST! hehe i was only in seventh grade.

  • @shortstuffzbby good lord, you played this in middle school?!! your school must be freakin amazing.

  • @Thunderdragon7 my middle school played this too. NBD.

  • i have the alto sax solo :D it sounds so amazing.....unless i play it XD

  • 1st clarinet in middle school O.O the first movement part is hard when you hit the really high f and go all the way down

  • What a great composition.

  • OMG! I love this song! Even if the clairinet part is hard. My high scholl band is doing this song in a compitition soon. :) Can't wait to show off the song to the judges.

  • My junior high band is playing this. It does not sound anywhere near as wonderful as this does, but it's getting there. I sit firat chair trumpet, and I love my part (:

  • the reason why movement 2 is good is cause he wrote it after a loved one that died

  • @Zadyus The reason Young Molly Bawn is sad is actually because the story of it is that a young man mistook his love for a deer and shot her.

  • second movement is brilliant. It makes me cry its so beautiful.<3

  • @ireniebobini I'm in the ninth grade now, and I played this last year in middle school. It sounded ALMOST just like this!!! We practiced for months to get it right :) And, I was first chair french horn on all three parts.
