  • I can remember watching complex drawings like the car with the engine and guts taking several minutes to refresh and at one point-- with CorelDraw 3 on a really slow PC thinking "with a bit of planning, a person could make animation with a complex vector drawing that takes forever to load..." Then web went wild, swish came out and Flash nailed the Internet-- those were the days!

  • i love the badass pc he has back there! XD

  • @thenunez96 Lol

  • i remember this tape - interesting how the emphasis was all about tracing

  • @nougat98 my experience goes back to the early 90's and discovering vector based graphics first on the Amiga... and then onto Visio when it was shareware and CorelDraw starting at 3.0 in 1994... the emphasis was highly on tracing because people comfortable with vector based drawing programs were CAD program users and it was "out of my league" for most users. Today, though: to be competitive you need vector, raster, and photo "shop" skills-- photography or videography a bonus. Adobe is awesome!

  • Did Adobe Streamline ever evolve or did it turn out to be a non-working concept?

  • @j0han1 It did evolve. I believe in either CS3 or CS4 it was integrated into the program's Live Trace feature. However, I've found it's still not that great and you're better off using another vectorization program or have it done by a third-party company.

  • This is such an 80s video.

  • The Bob Ross of graphic design.

  • looks way more user friendly than the new one lol

  • So that's how they made the shitty art in our textbooks , I used to draw over them ha ha .

  • Wow,mac already looked sexy back than.

  • Are you Jesus Christ?

  • i love how a five inch screen is the 1987 obvious choice for using graphic-editing software

  • Aside from the computer, nothing is really "going on" on that table.

  • I saw a Mac like that in a Bazar!!! and it still worked D:

  • look at that computer, imagine setting up a template of banners and postcards on that monitor, my word.

    vector artists rule!

    crashingChase

    Vector Zealot

  • yes! Mister John Warnock! wat een eindbaas!

  • It was made before computer was invented :D

  • Illustrator is my Life!!!

  • adobe illustrator is my life

  • Imagine how rich this guy is today...

  • wow.. i never knew that a Keebler elf ran Adobe back then !?

  • Who set the trend in vector drawing? Adobe Illustrator?

  • Wow, is this one ever a Classic! What is that, a Mac Plus? It is very clunky, especially the keyboard and mouse. I first started on a Mac Plus just before Syst 7 came out. We had Illustrator 3.0; it took over 5 minutes just to launch the software! Mac Pluses sold in those days for 3,500.00, with 10 MB RAM, and 20 MB external hard drive. The microscopic 9" screen, a whopping 512 x 352 pixels, would frustrate me to death, my pointer "bouncing off the walls" as it were.

  • unreal!

  • pen tool hasn't changed ! o.o

  • The best — LOL, I am doing in cs5, but in some way I'd like to work in those years which this work was more appriciated!

  • This was huge. Just the idea that you can UNDO was a major advance... Remember this was a time when we were using rapidograph pens, waxed mechanical artboards and even basic type had to be sent out to a typesetter or literally hand done. All art was photomechanical.

The ridiculous truth is that Illustrator has really only added features from this application - 23 odd years...

  • People shouldn't knock this. I'm suprised how sophisticated the Pen tool was back then. It hasn't changed in twenty years.

  • OMG they already had vectorial images!!! ( i bet that the harddrive wasn't good enought to save it ....)

  • @ZenoxDemin I was 17 years old when this video was made and I know that the hard drives back then were somewhere in the Kilobyte range.

  • I still have one of those old MACs - monochrome monitor and all - picked it up at a thrift store - it has a SCSI hard drive in it which makes me think it might have been a somewhat later model? I think these came without hard drive didn't they? I'm really not sure. Wonder if I can find this software for it?

  • oh so scanners already existed on 1987 huh

  • ...and a wide variety of gray shades you never knew existed!

  • monotone - and this is a product we are very excited about...

  • :)) After 23 YEARS basics are the same. But that monitor is totally funny, LOL. Just like he's in a submarine, looking into the periscope:)

Just imagine new Illustrator CS5 and nowadays monitors and computers. God damn, technology moves so fast. I have Spectrum ZX, my first computer, 1982, it uses TV for display...it seems better option than this...mobile-phone-size monitor:)

  • looooooooooooooool i didnt know that is to f****kibg old , Thank you .

  • 'primitive' :P, but it clearly indicates that adobe has been 'very' good at what it does or makes since it's early days...always ahead of the times...

  • It's easy to do when you release your product before it's actually ready for mass production lol

  • Can you imagine how it was so scaring in 1987? It's good to see this because shows us how everything began!

    Thanks for posting it!!!

  • wow amazing how far technology has gone over the years o.o

  • Powerful!... but very slow.

Still, it is amazing how much utility they got out of such limited computers.

  • MACINTOSH!! :D

  • What did those computers sell for new? about $3000.00? How much RAM?

  • it hasn't realy changed

  • It's funny... Illustrator '88 supported color, and yet you would't be able to view it on the Macintosh because color wasn't supported until System 7, released in 1991.

  • the guy has a 4 inch monitor, high tech stuff back in the day hahahahaha

  • Amazing! 1987 year! In Ukraine(where i living) at same time was only stone-age people.

  • Muito interessante!!!

  • This is awesome. Post more like this jnack.

  • And out lining them with any shade of... gray. Is it just me or did he really not sound that enthusiastic about that?

  • Haha ^^ 7:37

  • OMG I want that awesome computer! I mean. Look at the screen!

  • Comment removed

  • where i can buy that com someone pls tell me

  • coool

  • reminds me of a really old version of photoshop that was on one of my school's computers.. it had only square brushes LOL

  • ow.. cool

  • haha omg, look at that computer!

  • I know! it's ancient! :D

  • As they close up on Warnock's face, I immediately thought "So easy to use, even a caveman can do it"

  • "now we've created a little clump" LOL!

  • I love this. I laughed through some of it. the music is funny. i couldn't help it.

this was before i was born. AWESOME!

  • This video is just awesome... i just wish he showed the scanner hehe. Nice video =]

  • Is there more to this video?

  • I never got why the screens in old computers wear small, I mean come on look how much I cost back then. Thanks for show US the Old Days.

  • only black 'n white?

i have no idea about adobe stuffs before..

  • where do I get a copy of this powerful product??

  • wow!!! i really like the computer behind him!!!

  • @youyououa Whenever someone says MAC or Macintosh, that is the computer I picture in my head. I was 17 when that computer came out and it was a BIG deal to computer geeks.

  • How did you get the tape into the DVD player?

  • video novoo esse em?

    ehehe maneiro D+

  • Ah, there's that pen tool. Nothing's changed :P

  • That still looks pretty advanced for 1987, is that a top end 256kb RAM macintosh? :D

  • "You can make it any shade of grey you want"

  • wow thats so amazing just cause of that i wanna buy this program...and to think that that was advanced back then.

  • i wish i could that with illustrator cs4 (cuz if i could, i would have illcs4...)

  • im getting cs4, a brand new 3000 mac pro machine, a 30 inch widescreen monitor, and my own office for my new job....soooo f-in pumped

  • CS4? I'm so sorry for you, dude!

  • What are you even talking about? Cs4 is killer

  • @synbin24

  • classic - is that the new Razer gaming mouse??

  • lol i wanna have that mouse lol

  • WAIT! I need to know how to do the STEMS! lol

  • wow.. this takes me back to intro to computers in high school. i remember those huge floppy disks. print shop was the best part.

  • i remember those computers..lol. just the mention of a tape is funny!

  • LOL Man take a look at that computer! OLD SCHOOL

  • try watching you tube on that thing!! it would blow up.

  • haha typical 80's music

  • arnt we sooo lucky look how much better illustrator and our computers are now :D

  • this is so cool that you had this old video... thank you for sharing it...

  • I love this video, thanks for the post!

  • lol

  • amazing^^ but all things starts small at times. 8 minute: mac must quite expect. lol

  • This first version was awesome! Can we duplicate the windows for having both line and render view in cs3?

  • yeah, that´s great

  • I think the most you could do for CS3 is go to "Window > New Window," and then on the new window of the document, go to "View" menu, and toggle between "Outline, Preview, and Pixel Preview."

  • thx u for the reply!

  • from watching the video of the first illustrator i see that they kept the fundamentals in check with each new version and didnt deviated allot

  • Illustrator is my favorite

  • wOooow! WTF IS THIS XD OH THIS Will be my favorite video forever

  • wow! In my head, in 87 everything attached to graphism was made by hand.
