I can remember watching complex drawings like the car with the engine and guts taking several minutes to refresh and at one point-- with CorelDraw 3 on a really slow PC thinking "with a bit of planning, a person could make animation with a complex vector drawing that takes forever to load..." Then web went wild, swish came out and Flash nailed the Internet-- those were the days!
@nougat98 my experience goes back to the early 90's and discovering vector based graphics first on the Amiga... and then onto Visio when it was shareware and CorelDraw starting at 3.0 in 1994... the emphasis was highly on tracing because people comfortable with vector based drawing programs were CAD program users and it was "out of my league" for most users. Today, though: to be competitive you need vector, raster, and photo "shop" skills-- photography or videography a bonus. Adobe is awesome!
@j0han1 It did evolve. I believe in either CS3 or CS4 it was integrated into the program's Live Trace feature. However, I've found it's still not that great and you're better off using another vectorization program or have it done by a third-party company.
Wow, is this one ever a Classic! What is that, a Mac Plus? It is very clunky, especially the keyboard and mouse. I first started on a Mac Plus just before Syst 7 came out. We had Illustrator 3.0; it took over 5 minutes just to launch the software! Mac Pluses sold in those days for 3,500.00, with 10 MB RAM, and 20 MB external hard drive. The microscopic 9" screen, a whopping 512 x 352 pixels, would frustrate me to death, my pointer "bouncing off the walls" as it were.
This was huge. Just the idea that you can UNDO was a major advance... Remember this was a time when we were using rapidograph pens, waxed mechanical artboards and even basic type had to be sent out to a typesetter or literally hand done. All art was photomechanical.
The ridiculous truth is that Illustrator has really only added features from this application - 23 odd years...
I still have one of those old MACs - monochrome monitor and all - picked it up at a thrift store - it has a SCSI hard drive in it which makes me think it might have been a somewhat later model? I think these came without hard drive didn't they? I'm really not sure. Wonder if I can find this software for it?
:)) After 23 YEARS basics are the same. But that monitor is totally funny, LOL. Just like he's in a submarine, looking into the periscope:)
Just imagine new Illustrator CS5 and nowadays monitors and computers. God damn, technology moves so fast. I have Spectrum ZX, my first computer, 1982, it uses TV for display...it seems better option than this...mobile-phone-size monitor:)
'primitive' :P, but it clearly indicates that adobe has been 'very' good at what it does or makes since it's early days...always ahead of the times...
It's funny... Illustrator '88 supported color, and yet you would't be able to view it on the Macintosh because color wasn't supported until System 7, released in 1991.
@youyououa Whenever someone says MAC or Macintosh, that is the computer I picture in my head. I was 17 when that computer came out and it was a BIG deal to computer geeks.
I think the most you could do for CS3 is go to "Window > New Window," and then on the new window of the document, go to "View" menu, and toggle between "Outline, Preview, and Pixel Preview."

Did Adobe Streamline ever evolve or did it turn out to be a non-working concept?
