Seeing as how I have seen some documentaries where intersex ppl wished they were just assigned genders and never having found out about it rather than livin their life as intersexed and living in anguish, I think it really depends on the situation.
Did someone choose YOUR gender identity or did you decide? It is not for others (including doctors) to determine a child's gender role in life by surgically altering their genitalia. Most intersex people would rather make these decision for themselves when they reach adulthood.

Transsexual people are prime evidence that you'll develop your own sense of your gender no matter what kinds of parts you have. Gender is how you feel in your brain; just because an intersexed child has surgery to make them "female" doesn't mean they have a fixed gender as a female.

I think doctors perform IGM because they can't escape the sexual duality of humans. There does indeed seem to be a gray area. Lets also not forget that there are multiple kinds of "ambiguous" genitals. In one example of inter-sex, there are actually two sets of genitals: a vagina, and above it, a penis with no scrotum; internal testicles are palpable sometimes by vaginal exam. God bless all inter-sexed people.
So it's wrong to cut an enlarged clitoris in order to fit into society but it's okay to circumsize penis' (which has no medical need either)...if a parent wants to make a freakishly big clitoris smaller that should be up to the parent...what's so wrong? I'd be pissed if I had an enlarged clit and my mom didn't do anything about it because when you're an adult you'd prob be too scared to do it...how many older guys go in to get circumsized?

I think doctors perform IGM because they can't escape the sexual duality of humans. There does indeed seem to be a gray area. Lets also not forget that there are multiple kinds of "ambiguous" genitals. In one example of inter-sex, there are actually two sets of genitals: a vagina, and above it, a penis with no scrotum; internal testicles are palpable sometimes by vaginal exam. God bless all inter-sexed people.

So it's wrong to cut an enlarged clitoris in order to fit into society but it's okay to circumsize penis' (which has no medical need either)...if a parent wants to make a freakishly big clitoris smaller that should be up to the parent...what's so wrong? I'd be pissed if I had an enlarged clit and my mom didn't do anything about it because when you're an adult you'd prob be too scared to do it...how many older guys go in to get circumsized?

@mmunive21 While there is no medical need for circumcision, but there are medical benefits. The warm space between the foreskin and the penis is a breeding ground for germs so circumcised men have a lower risk of urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases. Furthermore, circumcision does not deprive a man of his ability to have pleasurable sexual experiences, cutting an enlarged clitoris does.

Our society doesn't give children enough credit. They should have the right to decide who they are and what they want to do with their own bodies. It shouldn't be a doctor's decision as long as the child is physically well. Cosmetic surgery should be just that - cosmetic, and up to the person whose body is being altered.

@offmyplanet7 most of the psychological problems result from the 'non-commital support' received frm the medical community... and the lack of empowering people who need this. Virtually every transsexual person suffers rejection from family, and/or employers, and/or friends... and risk everything to change. At 16, I went from one parent's place to the other - when changing schools, it would have been a great opportunity to transition.
