In general because humans are not set up to function that way very well. Society is still a machine built on foundations. Furthermore, the majority can only copy eachother. Shiftfallout, don't despair. The day will come when the same sex marriage is a reality. Or you'll die of old age (I presume). Whenever it comes first, we already won.

Magnvss, its not about winning or losing. Once you turn it into something thats win or lose, you have already lost in the big picture of things. You also have to define marriage, either as an institute of a specific religion (of which there are many) or the legal term. Personally, a real win would be to make all marriages under law, renamed to unions (regardless of sex), while allowing the many titles of "marriage" to be given out at the religious institution of choice, for name only.
