best part is that the ship was ok, not great but ok, the problem is his understanding of the systems, stay pointing straight up until you are past at least 40 000m not 4 000m! then you can go completely sideways, its a simple way to orbit

I once did an "Apollo 8" (i.e. fly out to the Mun, get into and out of Munar orbit, then return to Kerbin). Everything went nearly perfect, except I ended up parachuting my way down onto a steep mountain side like the one you feared so much at around 20:37. The capsule tubled down the slope and ended up in an explosion that killed the crew...! :-S

Because of air resistance, you more or less want to go straight up until you get out of the bulk of the atmosphere, and don't start to tip towards your intended orbital trajectory until you've gotten at least 20,000 meters up.

I didn't see anything regarding the SRB's splashing down and being destroyed; just the other parts (liquid fuel tanks). So it seems your 'chute recovery system was a success! Anyway, yes, after launch you need to do a 90 degree roll program just like in reality to line up with the ocean, lest you end up over the northern mountains. Congrats on a successful (AKA, survivable) first flight!

Trust me, the atmospheric drag IS there...if you ever hit out, you'd notice it like a brick wall when you come back into contact with it.

ALso, you should take a look on the Wiki at the SAS and Adv SAS modules. Just knowing how those work helps A LOT in making rockets, even insane ones...which are, of course, the BEST kind of rocket...

There is also an EXCELLENT space flight simulator called Orbiter space flight simulator. Check it out Kurt, it's got rendezvous with space stations, you can go to Mars and whatnot.. :D It is also pretty realistic, as you would see, you need to learn a lot of real space flight stuff before accomplishing anything complex! :)

Did you ever play Shuttle? It was released in 1992 and came with a giant poster showing the layout of the controls inside the space shuttle. I also remember it being incredibly hard (at least for an eight year old) and giving you the option of watching the crawler take the shuttle to the launch pad in real time.

Plus Kurt make sure your parachutes for the boosters are in the same stage or before the decoupler. For those you with lag: make sure you stop any programs before you play because KSP is very unoptimized and eats up ram for breakfast.
