The original King Piccolo from the first Dragonball show was the one that separated from Kami. This Piccolo is an exact copy because the original Piccolo left some eggs containing clone copies of himself scattered around to return and continue what he started if he was ever defeated. This Piccolo is the spawn from the last of those eggs which is why he is younger.

I wish they didn't treat this like Kami died. Instead, they should have altered Piccolo's persona to account for the merging. This would have allowed them to write a new character and keep Piccolo from becoming obsolete, so to speak. This whole part of the season was really kind of pointless past introducing Cell.

@caos1925 Before the "son of Katas" split it is rumored by the other Namekians that he was more powerful than Frieza, even as a child. He was the Broly of their species. However he was born shortly before the great drought that killed every Namekian but Guru, Slug, and the boy. He was too important to be allowed to die and was sent to another planet, but hit his head similar to Goku and forgot who he was (awfully convenient right?)

He couldn't overcome his evil so he split and created 'King' Piccolo. Kami then became Guardian despite a massive power drop and trained heroes to contain Piccolo until Goku killed Piccolo who spawned Piccolo Junior. Jr becomes good through training Gohan and fuses with Kami to become the son of Katas again.
