saw this movie when i was 8 or so and was absolutely terrified...../seriously depressed. now that i've read the book hrair times would sorta like to give it another go.....
Boy, this intro really doesn't give you much of an idea what the rest of the movie will be like (full of graphic violence and lots of bunny rabbits dying horrible bloody deaths).
I like how they present the relationship between god and it's creation that is present in most religious lore. God creates the world, and the world thanks God by disobeying their deity. In justice, God punishes the world, but leaves a light of hope so that all may survive or redeem themselves. I know I'm stating the obviouse, but since when is that present in a family film?
the sun god worned the rabbit to make his poeple stop making more baby'sand the rabbit did not wanna lisn its like the devil in islam that didnt want 2 bow fore adam becouse adam was made of clay and shaitaan himself was made of fire, its the same arrogance that you dont need god an can be arrogant in life
@gabbstarrr I'm calling you an idiot because you don't know how to type like a human with a functioning brain, you're genuinely implying that no-one else would know what philosophy is and you apparently hate all Disney movies. Which means you have no taste.
this is philosophy freinds :33 its also called immagination :OOOO which alot of people like 80% of the human race lack of >->....god ammit read ppl read philosophy DXXX its the best thign in the world :3 just like most of waner brother films like this one. its cartoons like this by waner bro's which mkae me cry in comparison to disney D::: disney sucks sooo much....sooo muchhh...
@Zennosaidosan what do you mean by that? oh yeah my typing >-> omg. seriously? you just gunna ignore my meanign because i type too fast. really? or are you calling me an idiot because i said disney sucks ass >-> or the fact that this is to do with philosophy >_>...or do you not know what that is :ooo...in any case i like the fact your insulting me because I have an opinion >-> well done you've renderd your argument pointless. i'm not trying to be clever i'm just saying...
Out of all the scenes of violence and characters in this film... It was only the Black Rabbit of Death that scared me as a kid. I always had nightmares about it...
After watching some sites with Lynx and Bobcat chasing rabbits and hares I've come to see something amazing in these creatures, particularly their knack for survival. Many times you see these big cats get close to these rabbits but that doesn't alway mean they're done for, just as often they get away.
I don't think they could capture the same horrific strangeness with the current style of films. It is too literal and all priority is put on extreme realism. (Not that this is bad, but it wouldn't work out for a story like this. What medium would they use? Probably 3D animation. It just wouldn't fit.) Just read the book instead. It's much better than the movie anyway. (Except I do love this opening scene.)
I profoundly hope this book is never remade into another film. Presumably with Matt Damon and Samuel L. Jackson voicing various rabbits. And stupefyingly overextended action sequences. With a torture scene.
@Miramax7000 Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois are probably are only hope for modern day movie classics :/ (there the producers of Lilo and Stitch and How to Train your Dragon)
However, you are very right, this movie will and has stand the test of time :D
We really need Martin Rosen back D: (the directer of this movie)
Have hope comrade, for according the the questionable wikipedia, there might be a remake. . . .however don't have your hopes up on who the directer will be :/
i love this film and this is the best bit and this films not that bad i watchin it when i saw a child i loved it! but the strange language still does throw me a bit
Got a chance to watch this movie for the first time in about 18 years last night and it was wild to watch as an adult after seeing it so many times as a kid.
Indeed, how old were you when you saw this movie? i was 12 when i rented it after reading reviews of it in movie review books saying "PG rated animated" and thought it would be cool to see an adult animated movie and it blew me away. The 90's version of this is either Antz or Felidae when it comes to talking animal movies in animation aimed at adults
@Johnlindsey289 I think I was about 8 or 9 when I saw it. It scared me, but compelled me at the same time. Amazing how we seemed to be be so much more advanced in entertainment back in the 80s! We have totally taken steps BACKWARDS today. It's stuff like this that made you think and imagine and expand your mind!
Yeah and everything that causes the least bit of friction will result in a massive explosion, also one of the rabbits are replaced completely by sean connery.
this part appears to be studeo ghibli artwork... but how can this be if so much of the movie is in such a different style...perhaps they copied or even asked studio ghibli for their artwork?
this film is from 1978, while ghibli only started in 1985. if anything, ghibli uses elements from this fantastic movie (I love ghibli, don't get me wrong, but this film is an original).
"All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed. "
Though I really enjoyed this intro, and the film itself was really good, and tried to stay as far away from the Animation Ghetto as possible, some part still felt, well. . .off. At least compared to the book, that is.
Oh, and must say, when I was younger (and still now), that drawing of the Black Rabbit of Inle when it appears at about 2:13 I found to be absolutely terrifying!
When I was 4 I saw this movie for the first time and the "Bright eyes" Song was scary to me all the time because I knew that as "Frith's Song" and Frith was scary to me! But now I love this movie.
Great story, great movie, great opening sequence. I remember it well from when I was a kid. Love the art style in this bit, especially the scary weasel!

i love that clip! takes me right back. actually i think as a kid i never really "got" this film, but i remember it so vividly. watchin it as an adult is like a whole new experience.

This is a classic, akin to Animal Farm, and 1984. This is a study in civil liberties and social structures.

El-ahrairah. In Adams's Lapine language, the name is a contraction of the phrase Elil-Hrair-Rah, meaning prince with a thousand enemies.
