I remember watching this as a tutorial , and I tried to do what coe did (strip mining) I gave up eventually, I went back down yesterday and couldn't come back up 'cuz there was a ladder fix, I had nothing in my inventory I thought there was lava down there.

@imairborne123 redstone torches give off level 7 light which means mobs still will spawn. In order to prevent mobs from spawning, it must be level 9 light or above. coal torches give off level 13 light.

Coe, use your diamond pick more! It can go through a thousand blocks at just about the speed of lighting, and using stone picks doesn't make sense when you're carrying around that beast. I understand you're worried about conserving it, but you also have 20 iron in that chest that mines everything that matters. You're digging for diamond and you still have a pick made out of it. Be efficient!

Not sure if you already got an answer, but mobs can spawn on leaves. I lost a large chunk out of the base of the first level of my (planned) tree house due to a creeper that fell down from on top of the tree, and found a few zombies on top of the same trees while wandering on them at night.
